NEW JERUSALEMSTUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives, hesent two of his disciples1 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר קָרְבוּ לִירוּשָׁלַיִם אֶל־בֵּית־פַּגֵּי וּבֵית־הִינִי בְּהַר הַזֵּיתִים וַיִּשְׁלַח שְׁנַיִם מִתַּלְמִידָיו
and said to them, 'Go to the vil age facing you, and as you enter it you wil at once find a tethered coltthat no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here.2 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לְכוּ אֶל־הַכְּפָר אֲשֶׁר מִמּוּלְכֶם וְהָיָה כְּבוֹאֲכֶם שָׁמָּה תִּמְצְאוּ עַיִר אָסוּר אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יָשַׁב עָלָיו אָדָם אוֹתוֹ הַתִּירוּ וְהָבִיאוּ
If anyone says to you, "What are you doing?" say, "The Master needs it and wil send it back here at once." '3 וְכִי־יֹאמַר אֲלֵיכֶם אִישׁ לָמָּה תַעֲשֹוּ זֹאת וַאֲמַרְתֶּם הָאָדוֹן צָרִיךְ לוֹ וּבְרֶגַע יְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ הֵנָּה
They went off and found a colt tethered near a door in the open street. As they untied it,4 וַיֵּלְכוּ וַיִּמְצְאוּ הָעַיִר אָסוּר אֶל־הַשַּׁעַר בַּחוּץ עַל־אֵם הַדָּרֶךְ וַיַּתִּירוּהוּ
some men standing there said, 'What are you doing, untying that colt?'5 וַאֲנָשִׁים מִן־הָעֹמְדִים שָׁם אָמְרוּ אֲלֵיהֶם מַה־זֹּאת תַּעֲשֹוּ לְהַתִּיר אֶת־הָעָיִר
They gave the answer Jesus had told them, and the men let them go.6 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲלֵיהֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּם יֵשׁוּעַ וַיַּנִּיחוּ לָהֶם
Then they took the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on its back, and he mounted it.7 וַיָּבִיאוּ אֶת־הָעַיִר אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ עָלָיו אֶת־בִּגְדֵיהֶם וַיֵּשֶׁב עָלָיו
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others greenery which they had cut in the fields.8 וְרַבִּים פָּרְשֹוּ אֶת־בִּגְדֵיהֶם עַל־הַדָּרֶךְ וַאֲחֵרִים כָּרְתוּ עֲנָפִים מִן־הָעֵצִים וַיִּשְׁטְחוּ עַל־הַדָּרֶךְ
And those who went in front and those who fol owed were al shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord!9 וְהַהֹלְכִים לְפָנָיו וְאַחֲרָיו צֹעֲקִים לֵאמֹר הוֹשַׁע־נָא בָּרוּךְ הַבָּא בְּשֵׁם יְהוָֹה
Blessed is the coming kingdom of David our father! Hosanna in the highest heavens!'10
He entered Jerusalem and went into the Temple; and when he had surveyed it al , as it was late bynow, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.11 וַיָּבֹא יֵשׁוּעַ יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְאֶל־בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וַיַּרְא וַיִּתְבּוֹנֵן עַל־הַכֹּל וְהַיּוֹם רָפָה לַעֲרוֹב וַיֵּצֵא אֶל־בֵּית־הִינִי עִם־שְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר
Next day as they were leaving Bethany, he felt hungry.12
Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it, but whenhe came up to it he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs.13 וַיַּרְא תְּאֵנָה מֵרָחוֹק וְלָהּ עָלִים וַיָּבֹא לִרְאוֹת הֲיִמְצָא־בָהּ פֶּרִי וַיִּקְרַב אֵלֶיהָ וְלֹא־מָצָא בָהּ כִּי אִם־עָלִים לְבַד כִּי לֹא הָיְתָה עֵת תְּאֵנִים
And he addressed the fig tree, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again.' And his disciples heard himsay this.14 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ מֵעַתָּה אִישׁ אַל־יֹאכַל פְּרִי מִמֵּךְ עַד־עוֹלָם וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ תַּלְמִידָיו
So they reached Jerusalem and he went into the Temple and began driving out the men selling andbuying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the seats of the dove sel ers.15 וַיָּבֹאוּ יְרוּשָׁלָיִם וַיָּבֹא יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וַיָּחֶל לְגָרֵשׁ מִשָּׁם אֶת־הַמּוֹכְרִים וְאֶת־הַקּוֹנִים וַיַּהֲפֹךְ אֶת־שֻׁלְחֲנוֹת הַשֻּׁלְחָנִים וְאֶת־מוֹשְׁבוֹת מֹכְרֵי הַיּוֹנִים
Nor would he allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple.16
And he taught them and said, 'Does not scripture say: My house wil be cal ed a house of prayer for al peoples? But you have turned it into a bandits' den.'17 וַיְלַמֵּד וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם הֲלֹא כָתוּב כִּי בֵיתִי בֵּית תְּפִלָּה יִקָּרֵא לְכָל־הָעַמִּים וְאַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתוֹ מְעָרַת פָּרִיצִים
This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doingaway with him; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching.18 וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ הַסּוֹפְרִים וְרָאשֵׁי הַכֹּהֲנִים וַיִּתְנַכְּלוּ אֹתוֹ לְהַשְׁמִידוֹ כִּי יָרְאוּ מִפָּנָיו יַעַן אֲשֶׁר כָּל־הָעָם מִשְׁתּוֹמְמִים עַל־תּוֹרָתוֹ
And when evening came he went out of the city.19
Next morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered to the roots.20
Peter remembered. 'Look, Rabbi,' he said to Jesus, 'the fig tree that you cursed has withered away.'21
Jesus answered, 'Have faith in God.22
In truth I tel you, if anyone says to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," with nodoubt in his heart, but believing that what he says wil happen, it will be done for him.23 כִּי־אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם כָּל־אֲשֶׁר יֹאמַר אֶל־הָהָר הַזֶּה הִנָּשֵׂא וְהֵעָתֵק אֶל־תּוֹךְ הַיָּם וְאֵין סָפֵק בִּלְבָבוֹ כִּי אִם־יַאֲמִין כִּי יִהְיֶה כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמָר כֵּן גַּם־יִהְיֶה־לּוֹ
I tel you, therefore, everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it wil beyours.24 עַל־כֵּן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁאֲלוּ בְּהִתְפַּלֶּלְכֶם הַאֲמִינוּ כִּי תִקָּחוּ וִיהִי לָכֶם
And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody, soyour Father in heavenmay forgive your failings too.'25 וְכִי תַעַמְדוּ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל תִּסְלְחוּ לְכָל־אִישׁ אֵת אֲשֶׁר בִּלְבַבְכֶם עָלָיו לְמַעַן יִסְלַח לָכֶם אֲבִיכֶם שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם אַף־הוּא אֶת־פִּשְׁעֵיכֶם
They came to Jerusalem again, and as Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests and thescribes and the elders came to him,27 וַיָּשׁוּבוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ יְרוּשָׁלָיִם וַיְהִי הוּא מִתְהַלֵּךְ בַּמִּקְדָּשׁ וַיָּבֹאוּ אֵלָיו הַכֹּהֲנִים הַגְּדוֹלִים וְהַסּוֹפְרִים וְהַזְּקֵנִים
and they said to him, 'What authority have you for acting like this? Or who gave you authority to actlike this?'28 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו בְּאֵיזוֹ רְשׁוּת אַתָּה עֹשֶׂה אֵלֶּה וּמִי נָתַן לְךָ אֶת־הָרְשׁוּת הַזֹּאת לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת־אֵלֶּה
Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; answer me and I wil tel you my authorityfor acting like this.29 וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ אֲלֵיהֶם גַּם־אֲנִי אֶשְׁאֲלָה אֶתְכֶם דָּבָר אֶחָד וְאַתֶּם הֲשִׁיבוּנִי וְאֹמַר לָכֶם בְּאֵיזוֹ רְשׁוּת אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה אֵלֶּה
John's baptism, what was its origin, heavenly or human?
And they argued this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil say, "Then why did yourefuse to believe him?"31 וַיַּחְשְׁבוּ כֹּה וָכֹה בְּקִרְבָּם לֵאמֹר אִם־נֹאמַר מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם יֹאמַר מַדּוּעַ אֵפוֹא לֹא הֶאֱמַנְתֶּם לוֹ
But dare we say human?' -- they had the people to fear, for everyone held that John had been a realprophet.32 אוֹ הֲנֹאמַר מִבְּנֵי אָדָם וַיִּירְאוּ אֶת־הָעָם כִּי־כֻלָּם חָשְׁבוּ אֶת־יוֹחָנָן לְנָבִיא בֶּאֱמֶת
So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And Jesus said to them, 'Nor will I tell you my authorityfor acting like this.'33 וַיַּעֲנוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא יָדָעְנוּ וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אִם־כֵּן גַּם־אֲנִי לֹא אֹמַר לָכֶם בְּאֵיזוֹ רְשׁוּת אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה אֵלֶּה
