NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives, hesent two of his disciples1 When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
and said to them, 'Go to the vil age facing you, and as you enter it you wil at once find a tethered coltthat no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here.2 and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone says to you, "What are you doing?" say, "The Master needs it and wil send it back here at once." '3 If anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.'"
They went off and found a colt tethered near a door in the open street. As they untied it,4 So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it.
some men standing there said, 'What are you doing, untying that colt?'5 Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"
They gave the answer Jesus had told them, and the men let them go.6 They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it.
Then they took the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on its back, and he mounted it.7 So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others greenery which they had cut in the fields.8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.
And those who went in front and those who fol owed were al shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord!9 Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of David our father! Hosanna in the highest heavens!'10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!"
He entered Jerusalem and went into the Temple; and when he had surveyed it al , as it was late bynow, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.11 He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Next day as they were leaving Bethany, he felt hungry.12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry.
Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it, but whenhe came up to it he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs.13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs.
And he addressed the fig tree, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again.' And his disciples heard himsay this.14 And he said to it in reply, "May no one ever eat of your fruit again!" And his disciples heard it.
So they reached Jerusalem and he went into the Temple and began driving out the men selling andbuying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the seats of the dove sel ers.15 They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.
Nor would he allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple.16 He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area.
And he taught them and said, 'Does not scripture say: My house wil be cal ed a house of prayer for al peoples? But you have turned it into a bandits' den.'17 Then he taught them saying, "Is it not written: 'My house shall be called a house of prayerfor all peoples'? But you have made it a den of thieves."
This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doingaway with him; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching.18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching.
And when evening came he went out of the city.19 When evening came, they went out of the city.
Next morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered to the roots.20 Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots.
Peter remembered. 'Look, Rabbi,' he said to Jesus, 'the fig tree that you cursed has withered away.'21 Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered."
Jesus answered, 'Have faith in God.22 Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in God.
In truth I tel you, if anyone says to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," with nodoubt in his heart, but believing that what he says wil happen, it will be done for him.23 Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.
I tel you, therefore, everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it wil beyours.24 Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.
And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody, soyour Father in heavenmay forgive your failings too.'25 When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions."
26 )
They came to Jerusalem again, and as Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests and thescribes and the elders came to him,27 They returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him
and they said to him, 'What authority have you for acting like this? Or who gave you authority to actlike this?'28 and said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?"
Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; answer me and I wil tel you my authorityfor acting like this.29 Jesus said to them, "I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
John's baptism, what was its origin, heavenly or human? Answer me that.'30 Was John's baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me."
And they argued this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil say, "Then why did yourefuse to believe him?"31 They discussed this among themselves and said, "If we say, 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say, '(Then) why did you not believe him?'
But dare we say human?' -- they had the people to fear, for everyone held that John had been a realprophet.32 But shall we say, 'Of human origin'?"--they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet.
So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And Jesus said to them, 'Nor will I tell you my authorityfor acting like this.'33 So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know." Then Jesus said to them, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things."
