NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives, hesent two of his disciples1 Et cum appropinquarent Hierosolymae, Bethphage et Bethaniae ad montemOlivarum, mittit duos ex discipulis suis
and said to them, 'Go to the vil age facing you, and as you enter it you wil at once find a tethered coltthat no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here.2 et ait illis: “ Ite in castellum,quod est contra vos, et statim introeuntes illud invenietis pullum ligatum,super quem nemo adhuc hominum sedit; solvite illum et adducite.
If anyone says to you, "What are you doing?" say, "The Master needs it and wil send it back here at once." '3 Et si quisvobis dixerit: “Quid facitis hoc?”, dicite: “Domino necessarius est, etcontinuo illum remittit iterum huc” ”.
They went off and found a colt tethered near a door in the open street. As they untied it,4 Et abeuntes invenerunt pullumligatum ante ianuam foris in bivio et solvunt eum.
some men standing there said, 'What are you doing, untying that colt?'5 Et quidam de illicstantibus dicebant illis: “ Quid facitis solventes pullum? ”.
They gave the answer Jesus had told them, and the men let them go.6 Qui dixerunteis, sicut dixerat Iesus; et dimiserunt eis.
Then they took the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on its back, and he mounted it.7 Et ducunt pullum ad Iesum etimponunt illi vestimenta sua; et sedit super eum.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others greenery which they had cut in the fields.8 Et multi vestimenta suastraverunt in via, alii autem frondes, quas exciderant in agris.
And those who went in front and those who fol owed were al shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord!9 Et quipraeibant et qui sequebantur, clamabant: “ Hosanna! Benedictus, qui venit innomine Domini!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of David our father! Hosanna in the highest heavens!'10 Benedictum, quod venit regnum patris nostri David! Hosanna inexcelsis! ”.
He entered Jerusalem and went into the Temple; and when he had surveyed it al , as it was late bynow, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.11 Et introivit Hierosolymam in templum; et circumspectis omnibus, cum iamvespera esset hora, exivit in Bethaniam cum Duodecim.
Next day as they were leaving Bethany, he felt hungry.12 Et altera die cum exirent a Bethania, esuriit.
Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it, but whenhe came up to it he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs.13 Cumque vidisset a longeficum habentem folia, venit si quid forte inveniret in ea; et cum venisset adeam, nihil invenit praeter folia: non enim erat tempus ficorum.
And he addressed the fig tree, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again.' And his disciples heard himsay this.14 Et respondensdixit ei: “ Iam non amplius in aeternum quisquam fructum ex te manducet ”.Et audiebant discipuli eius.
So they reached Jerusalem and he went into the Temple and began driving out the men selling andbuying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the seats of the dove sel ers.15 Et veniunt Hierosolymam. Et cum introisset in templum, coepit eicerevendentes et ementes in templo et mensas nummulariorum et cathedras vendentiumcolumbas evertit;
Nor would he allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple.16 et non sinebat, ut quisquam vas transferret per templum.
And he taught them and said, 'Does not scripture say: My house wil be cal ed a house of prayer for al peoples? But you have turned it into a bandits' den.'17 Et docebat dicens eis: “ Non scriptum est: “Domus mea domus orationisvocabitur omnibus gentibus”? Vos autem fecistis eam speluncam latronum ”.
This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doingaway with him; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching.18 Quo audito, principes sacerdotum et scribae quaerebant quomodo eum perderent;timebant enim eum, quoniam universa turba admirabatur super doctrina eius.
And when evening came he went out of the city.19 Etcum vespera facta esset, egrediebantur de civitate.
Next morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered to the roots.20 Et cum mane transirent, viderunt ficum aridam factam a radicibus.
Peter remembered. 'Look, Rabbi,' he said to Jesus, 'the fig tree that you cursed has withered away.'21 Etrecordatus Petrus dicit ei: “ Rabbi, ecce ficus, cui maledixisti, aruit ”.
Jesus answered, 'Have faith in God.22 Et respondens Iesus ait illis: “ Habete fidem Dei!
In truth I tel you, if anyone says to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," with nodoubt in his heart, but believing that what he says wil happen, it will be done for him.23 Amen dico vobis:Quicumque dixerit huic monti: “Tollere et mittere in mare”, et nonhaesitaverit in corde suo, sed crediderit quia, quod dixerit, fiat, fiet ei.
I tel you, therefore, everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it wil beyours.24 Propterea dico vobis: Omnia, quaecumque orantes petitis, credite quia iamaccepistis, et erunt vobis.
And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody, soyour Father in heavenmay forgive your failings too.'25 Et cum statis in oratione, dimittite, si quidhabetis adversus aliquem, ut et
Pater vester, qui in caelis est, dimittat vobis peccata vestra ”.
26
They came to Jerusalem again, and as Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests and thescribes and the elders came to him,27 Etveniunt rursus Hierosolymam. Et cum ambularet in templo, accedunt ad eum summisacerdotes et scribae et seniores
and they said to him, 'What authority have you for acting like this? Or who gave you authority to actlike this?'28 et dicebant illi: “ In qua potestate haecfacis? Vel quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem, ut ista facias? ”.
Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; answer me and I wil tel you my authorityfor acting like this.29 Iesus autemait illis: “ Interrogabo vos unum verbum, et respondete mihi; et dicam vobis,in qua potestate haec faciam:
John's baptism, what was its origin, heavenly or human? Answer me that.'30 Baptismum Ioannis de caelo erat an exhominibus? Respondete mihi ”.
And they argued this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil say, "Then why did yourefuse to believe him?"31 At illi cogitabant secum dicentes: “ Sidixerimus: “De caelo”, dicet: “Quare ergo non credidistis ei?”;
But dare we say human?' -- they had the people to fear, for everyone held that John had been a realprophet.32 siautem dixerimus: “Ex hominibus?” ”. Timebant populum: omnes enim habebantIoannem quia vere propheta esset.
So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And Jesus said to them, 'Nor will I tell you my authorityfor acting like this.'33 Et respondentes dicunt Iesu: “ Nescimus”. Et Iesus ait illis: “ Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate haec faciam”.
