NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives, hesent two of his disciples1 Et cum appropinquarent Jerosolymæ et Bethaniæ ad montem Olivarum, mittit duos ex discipulis suis,
and said to them, 'Go to the vil age facing you, and as you enter it you wil at once find a tethered coltthat no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here.2 et ait illis : Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim introëuntes illuc, invenietis pullum ligatum, super quem nemo adhuc hominum sedit : solvite illum, et adducite.
If anyone says to you, "What are you doing?" say, "The Master needs it and wil send it back here at once." '3 Et si quis vobis dixerit : Quid facitis ? dicite, quia Domino necessarius est : et continuo illum dimittet huc.
They went off and found a colt tethered near a door in the open street. As they untied it,4 Et abeuntes invenerunt pullum ligatum ante januam foris in bivio : et solvunt eum.
some men standing there said, 'What are you doing, untying that colt?'5 Et quidam de illic stantibus dicebant illis : Quid facitis solventes pullum ?
They gave the answer Jesus had told them, and the men let them go.6 Qui dixerunt eis sicut præceperat illis Jesus, et dimiserunt eis.
Then they took the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on its back, and he mounted it.7 Et duxerunt pullum ad Jesum : et imponunt illi vestimenta sua, et sedit super eum.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others greenery which they had cut in the fields.8 Multi autem vestimenta sua straverunt in via : alii autem frondes cædebant de arboribus, et sternebant in via.
And those who went in front and those who fol owed were al shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord!9 Et qui præibant, et qui sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes : Hosanna : benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini :
Blessed is the coming kingdom of David our father! Hosanna in the highest heavens!'10 benedictum quod venit regnum patris nostri David : hosanna in excelsis.
He entered Jerusalem and went into the Temple; and when he had surveyed it al , as it was late bynow, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.11 Et introivit Jerosolymam in templum : et circumspectis omnibus, cum jam vespera esset hora, exiit in Bethaniam cum duodecim.
Next day as they were leaving Bethany, he felt hungry.12 Et alia die cum exirent a Bethania, esuriit.
Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it, but whenhe came up to it he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs.13 Cumque vidisset a longe ficum habentem folia, venit si quid forte inveniret in ea : et cum venisset ad eam, nihil invenit præter folia : non enim erat tempus ficorum.
And he addressed the fig tree, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again.' And his disciples heard himsay this.14 Et respondens dixit ei : Jam non amplius in æternum ex te fructum quisquam manducet. Et audiebant discipuli ejus.
So they reached Jerusalem and he went into the Temple and began driving out the men selling andbuying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the seats of the dove sel ers.15 Et veniunt in Jerosolymam. Et cum introisset in templum, cœpit ejicere vendentes et ementes in templo : et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit :
Nor would he allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple.16 et non sinebat ut quisquam transferret vas per templum :
And he taught them and said, 'Does not scripture say: My house wil be cal ed a house of prayer for al peoples? But you have turned it into a bandits' den.'17 et docebat, dicens eis : Nonne scriptum est : Quia domus mea, domus orationis vocabitur omnibus gentibus ? vos autem fecistis eam speluncam latronum.
This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doingaway with him; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching.18 Quo audito principes sacerdotum et scribæ, quærebant quomodo eum perderent : timebant enim eum, quoniam universa turba admirabatur super doctrina ejus.
And when evening came he went out of the city.19 Et cum vespera facta esset, egrediebatur de civitate.
Next morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered to the roots.20 Et cum mane transirent, viderunt ficum aridam factam a radicibus.
Peter remembered. 'Look, Rabbi,' he said to Jesus, 'the fig tree that you cursed has withered away.'21 Et recordatus Petrus, dixit ei : Rabbi, ecce ficus, cui maledixisti, aruit.
Jesus answered, 'Have faith in God.22 Et respondens Jesus ait illis : Habete fidem Dei.
In truth I tel you, if anyone says to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," with nodoubt in his heart, but believing that what he says wil happen, it will be done for him.23 Amen dico vobis, quia quicumque dixerit huic monti : Tollere, et mittere in mare, et non hæsitaverit in corde suo, sed crediderit, quia quodcumque dixerit fiat, fiet ei.
I tel you, therefore, everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it wil beyours.24 Propterea dico vobis, omnia quæcumque orantes petitis, credite quia accipietis, et evenient vobis.
And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody, soyour Father in heavenmay forgive your failings too.'25 Et cum stabitis ad orandum, dimittite si quid habetis adversus aliquem : ut et Pater vester, qui in cælis est, dimittat vobis peccata vestra.
26 Quod si vos non dimiseritis : nec Pater vester, qui in cælis est, dimittet vobis peccata vestra.
They came to Jerusalem again, and as Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests and thescribes and the elders came to him,27 Et veniunt rursus Jerosolymam. Et cum ambularet in templo, accedunt ad eum summi sacerdotes, et scribæ, et seniores :
and they said to him, 'What authority have you for acting like this? Or who gave you authority to actlike this?'28 et dicunt ei : In qua potestate hæc facis ? et quis dedit tibi hanc potestatem ut ista facias ?
Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; answer me and I wil tel you my authorityfor acting like this.29 Jesus autem respondens, ait illis : Interrogabo vos et ego unum verbum, et respondete mihi : et dicam vobis in qua potestate hæc faciam.
John's baptism, what was its origin, heavenly or human? Answer me that.'30 Baptismus Joannis, de cælo erat, an ex hominibus ? Respondete mihi.
And they argued this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil say, "Then why did yourefuse to believe him?"31 At illi cogitabant secum, dicentes : Si dixerimus : De cælo, dicet : Quare ergo non credidistis ei ?
But dare we say human?' -- they had the people to fear, for everyone held that John had been a realprophet.32 Si dixerimus : Ex hominibus, timemus populum : omnes enim habebant Joannem quia vere propheta esset.
So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And Jesus said to them, 'Nor will I tell you my authorityfor acting like this.'33 Et respondentes dicunt Jesu : Nescimus. Et respondens Jesus ait illis : Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc faciam.
