NEW JERUSALEMJERUSALEM
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus1 En ce temps-là, la renommée de Jésus parvint aux oreilles d'Hérode le tétrarque,
and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'2 qui dit à ses serviteurs: "Celui-là est Jean le Baptiste! Le voilà ressuscité des morts: d'où lespouvoirs miraculeux qui se déploient en sa personne!"
Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.3 C'est qu'en effet Hérode avait fait arrêter, enchaîner et emprisonner Jean, à cause d'Hérodiade, lafemme de Philippe son frère.
For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'4 Car Jean lui disait: "Il ne t'est pas permis de l'avoir."
He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.5 Il avait même voulu le tuer, mais avait craint la foule, parce qu'on le tenait pour un prophète.
Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod6 Or, comme Hérode célébrait son anniversaire de naissance, la fille d'Hérodiade dansa en public etplut à Hérode
that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.7 au point qu'il s'engagea par serment à lui donner ce qu'elle demanderait.
Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'8 Endoctrinée par sa mère, elle lui dit: "Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste."
The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,9 Le roi fut contristé, mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner
and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.10 et envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison.
The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.11 Sa tête fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui la porta à sa mère.
John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.12 Les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre le cadavre et l'enterrèrent; puis ils allèrent informer Jésus.
When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.13 L'ayant appris, Jésus se retira en barque dans un lieu désert, à l'écart; ce qu'apprenant, les foulespartirent à sa suite, venant à pied des villes.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.14 En débarquant, il vit une foule nombreuse et il en eut pitié; et il guérit leurs infirmes.
When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'15 Le soir venu, les disciples s'approchèrent et lui dirent: "L'endroit est désert et l'heure est déjàpassée; renvoie donc les foules afin qu'elles aillent dans les villages s'acheter de la nourriture."
Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'16 Mais Jésus leur dit: "Il n'est pas besoin qu'elles y aillent; donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger" --
But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'17 "Mais, lui disent-ils, nous n'avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons." Il dit:
So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'18 "Apportez-les moi ici."
He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.19 Et, ayant donné l'ordre de faire étendre les foules sur l'herbe, il prit les cinq pains et les deuxpoissons, leva les yeux au ciel, bénit, puis, rompant les pains, il les donna aux disciples, qui les donnèrent auxfoules.
They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.20 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l'on emporta le reste des morceaux: douze pleins couffins!
Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.21 Or ceux qui mangèrent étaient environ 5.000 hommes, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.
And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.22 Et aussitôt il obligea les disciples à monter dans la barque et à le devancer sur l'autre rive, pendant qu'il renverrait les foules.
After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,23 Et quand il eut renvoyé les foules, il gravit la montagne, à l'écart, pour prier. Le soir venu, ilétait là, seul.
while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.24 La barque, elle, se trouvait déjà éloignée de la terre de plusieurs stades, harcelée par les vagues, car le vent était contraire.
In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,25 A la quatrième veille de la nuit, il vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer.
and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.26 Les disciples, le voyant marcher sur la mer, furent troublés: "C'est un fantôme", disaient-ils, etpris de peur ils se mirent à crier.
But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'27 Mais aussitôt Jésus leur parla en disant: "Ayez confiance, c'est moi, soyez sans crainte."
It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'28 Sur quoi, Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, si c'est bien toi, donne-moi l'ordre de venir à toi sur leseaux" --
Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,29 "Viens", dit Jésus. Et Pierre, descendant de la barque, se mit à marcher sur les eaux et vint versJésus.
but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'30 Mais, voyant le vent, il prit peur et, commençant à couler, il s'écria: "Seigneur, sauve-moi!"
Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'31 Aussitôt Jésus tendit la main et le saisit, en lui disant: "Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tudouté?"
And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.32 Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba.
The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'33 Ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui, en disant: "Vraiment, tu es Fils deDieu!"
Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.34 Ayant achevé la traversée, ils touchèrent terre à Gennésaret.
When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,35 Les gens de l'endroit, l'ayant reconnu, mandèrent la nouvelle à tout le voisinage, et on luiprésenta tous les malades:
begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.36 on le priait de les laisser simplement toucher la frange de son manteau, et tous ceux quitouchèrent furent sauvés.
