Matthew 14

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus	1 En aquel tiempo, la fama de Jesús llegó a oídos del tetrarca Herodes,
2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	2 y él dijo a sus allegados: «Este es Juan el Bautista; ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso se manifiestan en él poderes milagrosos».
3 Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias,his brother Philip's wife.	3 Herodes, en efecto, había hecho arrestar, encadenar y encarcelar a Juan, a causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Felipe,
4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'	4 porque Juan le decía: «No te es lícito tenerla».
5 He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.	5 Herodes quería matarlo, pero tenía miedo del pueblo, que consideraba a Juan un profeta.
6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod	6 El día en que Herodes festejaba su cumpleaños, la hija de Herodías bailó en público, y le agradó tanto a Herodes
7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.	7 que prometió bajo juramento darle lo que pidiera.
8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'	8 Instigada por su madre, ella dijo: «Tráeme aquí sobre una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
9 The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,	9 El rey se entristeció, pero a causa de su juramento y por los convidados, ordenó que se la dieran
10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.	10 y mandó decapitar a Juan en la cárcel.
11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.	11 Su cabeza fue llevada sobre una bandeja y entregada a la joven, y esta la presentó a su madre.
12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.	12 Los discípulos de Juan recogieron el cadáver, lo sepultaron y después fueron a informar a Jesús.
13 When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.	13 Al enterarse de eso, Jesús se alejó en una barca a un lugar desierto para esta a solas. Apenas lo supo la gente, dejó las ciudades y lo siguió a pie.
14 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.	14 Cuando desembarcó, Jesús vio una gran muchedumbre y, compadeciéndose de ella, curó a los enfermos.
15 When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'	15 Al atardecer, los discípulos se acercaron y le dijeron: «Este es un lugar desierto y ya se hace tarde; despide a la multitud para que vaya a las ciudades a comprarse alimentos».
16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'	16 Pero Jesús les dijo: «No es necesario que se vayan, denles de comer ustedes mismos».
17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'	17 Ellos respondieron: «Aquí no tenemos más que cinco panes y dos pescados».
18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'	18 «Tráiganmelos aquí», les dijo.
19 He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.	19 Y después de ordenar a la multitud que se sentara sobre el pasto, tomó los cinco panes y los dos pescados, y levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes, los dio a sus discípulos, y ellos los distribuyeron entre la multitud.
20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.	20 Todos comieron hasta saciarse y con los pedazos que sobraron se llenaron doce canastas.
21 Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.	21 Los que comieron fueron unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar las mujeres y los niños.
22 And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.	22 En seguida, obligó a los discípulos que subieran a la barca y pasaran antes que él a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía a la multitud.
23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,	23 Después, subió a la montaña para orar a solas. Y al atardecer, todavía estaba allí, solo.
24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.	24 La barca ya estaba muy lejos de la costa, sacudida por las olas, porque tenían viento en contra.
25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,	25 A la madrugada, Jesús fue hacia ellos, caminando sobre el mar.
26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.	26 Los discípulos, al verlo caminar sobre el mar, se asustaron. «Es un fantasma», dijeron, y llenos de temor se pusieron a gritar.
27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'	27 Pero Jesús les dijo: «Tranquilícense, soy yo; no teman.
28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'	28 Entonces Pedro le respondió: «Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a tu encuentro sobre el agua».
29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,	29 «Ven», le dijo Jesús. Y Pedro, bajando de la barca, comenzó a caminar sobre el agua en dirección a él.
30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'	30 Pero, al ver la violencia del viento, tuvo miedo, y como empezaba a hundirse, gritó: «Señor, sálvame».
31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'	31 En seguida, Jesús le tendió la mano y lo sostuvo, mientras le decía: «Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?».
32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.	32 En cuanto subieron a la barca, el viento se calmó.
33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'	33 Los que estaban en ella se postraron ante él, diciendo: «Verdaderamente, tú eres el Hijo de Dios».
34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.	34 Al llegar a la otra orilla, fueron a Genesaret.
35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,	35 Cuando la gente del lugar lo reconoció, difundió la noticia por los alrededores, y le llevaban a todos los enfermos,
36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.	36 rogándole que los dejara tocar tan sólo los flecos de su manto, y todos los que lo tocaron quedaron curados.
