1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus	1 En ce temps-là la renommée de Jésus arriva jusqu’à Hérode, le tétrarque,
2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	2 et il dit à ses serviteurs: "Ce ne peut être que Jean-Baptiste! Il a été ressuscité d’entre les morts et c’est pourquoi les forces supérieures agissent à travers lui.”
3 Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias,his brother Philip's wife.	3 Il faut savoir qu’Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean et l’avait mis en prison avec des chaînes pour l’affaire d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe.
4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'	4 Car Jean disait à Hérode: "Tu n’as pas le droit d’avoir cette femme.”
5 He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.	5 Hérode l’aurait bien fait mourir s’il n’avait pas craint le peuple; en effet les gens le considéraient comme un prophète.
6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod	6 Mais voici qu’arrive l’anniversaire d’Hérode: la fille d’Hérodiade vient danser au milieu des invités et elle plaît tellement à Hérode
7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.	7 qu’il jure de lui donner tout ce qu’elle demandera.
8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'	8 Poussée par sa mère, elle répond: "Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean-Baptiste.”
9 The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,	9 Le roi est très ennuyé, car il a juré et tous les invités du banquet sont témoins; alors il commande de la lui donner.
10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.	10 Il envoie un garde pour décapiter Jean dans sa prison;
11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.	11 la tête est apportée sur un plat et donnée à l’adolescente qui la remet à sa mère.
12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.	12 Après cela, les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre son corps pour l’ensevelir, puis ils portèrent la nouvelle à Jésus.
13 When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.	13 Lorsque Jésus connut la nouvelle, il s’éloigna et partit discrètement avec la barque vers un lieu désert. Mais la foule l’apprit et les gens vinrent des villes à pied pour le rejoindre.
14 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.	14 En débarquant, Jésus vit cette foule nombreuse, il eut pitié d’eux et il guérit leurs malades.
15 When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'	15 Lorsque le soir arriva, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui et lui dirent: "L’endroit est désert et l’heure est déjà passée. Renvoie cette foule pour qu’ils aillent s’acheter de quoi manger dans les villages voisins.”
16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'	16 Mais Jésus leur dit: "Il n’est pas nécessaire qu’ils s’en aillent, donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger.”
17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'	17 Ils lui disent: "Ici, nous n’avons que cinq pains et deux poissons!”
18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'	18 Alors Jésus leur dit: "Apportez-les-moi ici!”
19 He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.	19 Puis il donne l’ordre à tout le monde de s’étendre sur l’herbe. Il prend les cinq pains et les deux poissons, il lève le regard vers le ciel, il prononce la bénédiction et rompt le pain. Ensuite il donne le pain aux disciples et les disciples le donnent à la foule.
20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.	20 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l’on emporta les morceaux qui restaient: douze pleins paniers.
21 Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.	21 Pourtant ceux qui avaient mangé étaient près de 5 000 hommes, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.
22 And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.	22 Aussitôt Jésus obligea les disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer sur l’autre rive sans l’attendre, pendant que lui renvoyait la foule.
23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,	23 Après l’avoir renvoyée, il gravit la montagne pour y prier à l’écart. La nuit était tombée et il était là, seul.
24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.	24 Pendant ce temps la barque était déjà loin de terre, bien secouée par les vagues, car le vent était contraire.
25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,	25 Jésus vint à eux peu avant le lever du jour: il marchait sur les eaux.
26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.	26 En le voyant marcher sur la mer, les disciples furent effrayés. Ils disaient: "C’est un fantôme!” et ils se mirent à crier tellement ils avaient peur.
27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'	27 Tout de suite Jésus leur parla: "Remettez-vous, c’est moi, ne craignez pas!”
28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'	28 Pierre alors lui dit: "Seigneur, si c’est toi, donne-moi l’ordre d’aller sur l’eau jusqu’à toi.”
29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,	29 Et Jésus lui dit: "Viens!” Pierre descend donc de la barque; il marche sur l’eau et s’approche de Jésus.
30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'	30 Mais il voit que le vent est fort et il a peur, et comme il commence à s’enfoncer, il crie: "Seigneur, sauve-moi!”
31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'	31 Aussitôt Jésus étend la main, le saisit et lui dit: "Homme de peu de foi! Pourquoi as-tu hésité?”
32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.	32 Au moment où ils remontaient dans la barque, le vent tomba
33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'	33 et ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui en disant: "Vraiment tu es Fils de Dieu!”
34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.	34 Ayant achevé la traversée, ils abordèrent la rive de Génésaret.
35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,	35 Les hommes de l’endroit le reconnurent et le firent savoir dans tous les environs, de sorte qu’on amenait à Jésus tous ceux qui étaient mal en point.
36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.	36 Ils lui demandaient de pouvoir seulement toucher la frange de son vêtement, et tous ceux qui la touchaient étaient sauvés.
