1 Now Yahweh ordained that a great fish should swal ow Jonah; and Jonah remained in the bel y of thefish for three days and three nights.1 O Senhor fez que ali se encontrasse um grande peixe para engolir Jonas, e este esteve três dias e três noites no ventre do peixe.
2 From the bel y of the fish, Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God; he said:2 Do fundo das entranhas do peixe, Jonas fez esta prece ao Senhor, seu Deus:
3 Out of my distress I cried to Yahweh and he answered me, from the bel y of Sheol I cried out; you heardmy voice!3 Em minha aflição, invoquei o Senhor, e ele ouviu-me. Do meio da morada dos mortos, clamei a vós, e ouvistes minha voz.
4 For you threw me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the floods closed round me. Al yourwaves and bil ows passed over me;4 Lançastes-me no abismo, no meio das águas e as ondas me envolviam. Todas as vossas vagas e todas as vossas ondas passavam sobre mim.
5 then I thought, 'I am banished from your sight; how shal I ever see your holy Temple again?'5 E eu já dizia: fui rejeitado de diante de vossos olhos. Acaso me será dado ainda rever vosso santo templo?!
6 The waters round me rose to my neck, the deep was closing round me, seaweed twining round myhead.6 As águas envolviam-me até a garganta, o abismo me cercava. As algas envolviam-me a cabeça.
7 To the roots of the mountains, I sank into the underworld, and its bars closed round me for ever. But youraised my life from the Pit, Yahweh my God!7 Eu tinha descido até as raízes das montanhas, até a terra cujos ferrolhos eternos se fecharam sobre mim.
8 When my soul was growing ever weaker, Yahweh, I remembered you, and my prayer reached you inyour holy Temple.8 Quando desfalecia a minha vida, pensei no Senhor; minha oração chegou a vós, no vosso santo templo.
9 Some abandon their faithful love by worshipping false gods,9 Os que servem a ídolos vãos abandonam a fonte das graças.
10 but I shal sacrifice to you with songs of praise. The vow I have made I shall fulfil! Salvation comesfrom Yahweh!10 Eu, porém, oferecerei um sacrifício com cânticos de louvor, e cumprirei o voto que fiz. Do Senhor vem a salvação.
11 Yahweh spoke to the fish, which then vomited Jonah onto the dry land.11 Então, o Senhor ordenou ao peixe, e este vomitou Jonas na praia.
