NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now the Lord Yahweh Sabaoth is about to deprive Jerusalem and Judah of resources and provisions --al reserves of food, al reserves of water-1 The Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall take away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and prop (all supplies of bread and water):
of hero, warrior, judge, prophet, diviner, elder,2 Hero and warrior, judge and prophet, fortune-teller and elder,
captain, dignitary, counsellor, architect, soothsayer.3 The captain of fifty and the nobleman, counselor, skilled magician, and expert charmer.
'I shal give them boys for princes, raw lads to rule over them.'4 I will make striplings their princes; the fickle shall govern them,
People will be il -treated by one another, each by his neighbour; the young wil insult the aged, and thelow, the respected.5 And the people shall oppress one another, yes, every man his neighbor. The child shall be bold toward the elder, and the base toward the honorable.
Yes, a man wil catch hold of his brother in their father's house, to say, 'You have a cloak, so you beleader, and rule this heap of ruins.'6 When a man seizes his brother in his father's house, saying, "You have clothes! Be our ruler, and take in hand this ruin!"--
And, that day, the other wil protest, 'I am no healer; in my house there is neither food nor clothing; donot make me leader of the people.'7 Then shall he answer in that day: "I will not undertake to cure this, when in my own house there is no bread or clothing! You shall not make me ruler of the people."
For Jerusalem has col apsed and Judah has fallen, because their words and deeds affront Yahweh andinsult his glorious gaze.8 Jerusalem is crumbling, Judah is falling; for their speech and their deeds are before the LORD, a provocation in the sight of his majesty.
Their complacency bears witness against them, they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not conceal it,al the worse for them, for they have hatched their own downfal .9 Their very look bears witness against them; their sin like Sodom they vaunt, They hide it not. Woe to them! they deal out evil to themselves.
Say, 'Blessed the upright, for he will feed on the fruit of his deeds;10 Happy the just, for it will be well with them, the fruit of their works they will eat.
woe to the wicked, it wil go il with him, for he will be treated as his actions deserve.'11 Woe to the wicked man! All goes ill, with the work of his hands he will be repaid.
O my people, their oppressors pil age them and extortioners rule over them! O my people, your rulersmislead you and efface the paths you ought to fol ow!12 My people--a babe in arms will be their tyrant, and women will rule them! O my people, your leaders mislead, they destroy the paths you should follow.
Yahweh has risen to accuse, is standing to pass judgement on the people.13 The LORD rises to accuse, standing to try his people.
Yahweh is about to try the elders and the princes of his people, 'You are the ones who have ravagedthe vineyard, the spoils of the poor are in your houses.14 The Lord enters into judgment with his people's elders and princes: It is you who have devoured the vineyard; the loot wrested from the poor is in your houses.
By what right do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?' says the Lord Yahweh Sabaoth.15 What do you mean by crushing my people, and grinding down the poor when they look to you? says the Lord, the GOD of hosts.
Yahweh says: Because Zion's daughters are proud and walk with heads held high and enticing eyes --with mincing steps they go, jingling the bangles on their feet-16 The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with necks outstretched Ogling and mincing as they go, their anklets tinkling with every step,
the Lord will give Zion's daughters scabby heads, Yahweh will lay their foreheads bare.17 The Lord shall cover the scalps of Zion's daughters with scabs, and the LORD shall bare their heads.
That day the Lord wil take away the ornamental chains, medallions, crescents,18 On that day the LORD will do away with the finery of the anklets, sunbursts, and crescents;
pendants, bracelets, trinkets,19 the pendants, bracelets, and veils;
diadems, ankle-chains, necklaces, scent bottles, amulets,20 the headdresses, bangles, cinctures, perfume boxes, and amulets;
finger-rings, nose-rings,21 the signet rings, and the nose rings;
party dresses, cloaks, scarves, purses,22 the court dresses, wraps, cloaks, and purses;
mirrors, linen clothes, turbans and mantillas.23 the mirrors, linen tunics, turbans, and shawls.
Then, instead of perfume, a stink; instead of belt, a rope, instead of hair elaborately dressed, a shavenscalp, instead of gorgeous clothes, sacking round the waist, and brand marks instead of beauty.24 Instead of perfume there will be stench, instead of the girdle, a rope, And for the coiffure, baldness; for the rich gown, a sackcloth skirt. Then, instead of beauty:
Your men wil fal by the sword, your warriors in battle,25 Your men will fall by the sword, and your champions, in war;
and her gates wil moan and mourn; she wil sit on the ground, deserted.26 Her gates will lament and mourn, as the city sits desolate on the ground.
