Sirach 17

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Lord fashioned human beings from the earth, to consign them back to it.	1 El Señor creó al hombre de la tierra y lo hace volver de nuevo a ella.
2 He gave them so many days and so much time, he gave them authority over everything on earth.	2 Le señaló un número de días y un tiempo determinado, y puso bajo su dominio las cosas de la tierra.
3 He clothed them in strength, like himself, and made them in his own image.	3 Lo revistió de una fuerza semejante a la suya y lo hizo según su propia imagen.
4 He fil ed al living things with dread of human beings, making them masters over beasts and birds.	4 Hizo que todos los vivientes lo temieran, para que él dominara las fieras y los pájaros.
5	5 [Ellos recibieron el uso de las cinco operaciones del Señor; como sexto don, les concedió la inteligencia; y como séptimo, el lenguaje que interpreta las obras de Dios.]
6 He made them a tongue, eyes and ears, and gave them a heart to think with.	6 Le dio una lengua, ojos y oídos, el poder de discernir y un corazón para pensar.
7 He fil ed them with knowledge and intelligence, and showed them what was good and what evil.	7 El colmó a los hombres de saber y entendimiento, y les mostró el bien y el mal.
8 He put his own light in their hearts to show them the magnificence of his works,	8 Les infundió su propia luz, para manifestarles la grandeza de sus obras,
9	9 y les permitió gloriarse eternamente de sus maravillas:
10 so that they would praise his holy name as they told of his magnificent works.	10 así alabarán su Nombre santo, proclamando la grandeza de sus obras.
11 He set knowledge before them, he endowed them with the law of life.	11 Les concedió además la ciencia y les dio como herencia una Ley de vida;
12 He established an eternal covenant with them, and revealed his judgements to them.	12 estableció con ellos una alianza eterna y les hizo conocer sus decretos.
13 Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory, and their ears heard the glory of his voice.	13 Ellos vieron con sus ojos la grandeza de su gloria y oyeron con sus oídos la gloria de su voz.
14 He said to them, 'Beware of al wrong-doing'; he gave each a commandment concerning hisneighbour.	14 El les dijo: «Cuídense de toda injusticia», y dio a cada uno preceptos acerca del prójimo.
15 Their ways are always under his eye, they cannot be hidden from his sight.	15 Los caminos de los hombres están siempre ante él y no pueden ocultarse a sus ojos.
16	16 [Sus caminos van hacia el mal desde la juventud, y no son capaces de transformar en corazones de carne sus corazones de piedra.]
17 Over each nation he has set a governor, but Israel is the Lord's own portion.	17 El asignó un jefe a cada nación, pero Israel es la parte del Señor.
18	18 El es su primogénito, al que nutrió con su instrucción, y cuando dispensa la luz del amor, no lo abandona.
19 Their actions are al as plain as the sun to him, and his eyes rest constantly on their conduct.	19 Todas sus obras son para él claras como el sol y él tiene los ojos fijos en sus caminos.
20 Their iniquities are not hidden from him, al their sins are before the Lord.	20 Sus injusticias no están ocultas para el Señor y todos sus pecados están delante de él.
21	21 [Pero el Señor es bondadoso y conoce a su criatura; no las deja ni abandona, sino que las perdona.]
22 Almsgiving is like a signet ring to him, he cherishes generosity like the pupil of an eye.	22 La limosna de un hombre es para él como un sello, y tiene en cuenta un favor como la pupila de sus ojos.
23 One day he wil rise and reward them, he wil repay their deserts on their own heads.	23 Después, él se levantará para retribuirles y pondrá sobre sus cabezas la recompensa merecida.
24 But to those who repent he permits return, and he encourages those who have lost hope.	24 A los que se arrepienten, les permite volver y reconforta a los que perdieron la constancia.
25 Return to the Lord and renounce your sins, plead before his face, stop offending him.	25 Vuelve al Señor y deja de pecar, suplica ante su rostro y deja de ofenderlo.
26 Come back to the Most High, turn away from iniquity and hold all that is foul in abhorrence.	26 Vuelve al Altísimo, apártate de la injusticia y odia profundamente toda abominación.
27 Who is going to praise the Most High in Sheol if we do not glorify him while we are alive?	27 ¿Quién alabará al Altísimo en el Abismo, si los vivientes no le rinden homenaje?
28 The dead can praise no more than those who do not exist, only those with life and health can praisethe Lord.	28 el muerto, el que ya no existe, deja de alabarlo: el que está vivo y sano debe alabar al Señor.
29 How great is the mercy of the Lord, his pardon for those who turn to him!	29 ¡Qué grande es la generosidad del Señor y su perdón para los que vuelven a él!
30 For we cannot have everything, human beings are not immortal.	30 Un hombre no puede tenerlo todo, porque el ser humano no es inmortal.
31 What is brighter than the sun? And yet it fades. Flesh and blood think of nothing but evil.	31 ¿Hay algo más luminoso que el sol? ¡Y sin embargo, también él se eclipsa! ¡Cuánto más la carne y la sangre, que sólo conciben el mal!
32 He surveys the armies of the lofty sky, and al of us are only dust and ashes.	32 El Señor pasa revista al ejército de los cielos, ¡cuánto más a los hombres, que son tierra y ceniza!
