[Psalm Of Asaph] The God of gods, Yahweh, is speaking, from east to west he summons the earth. | 1 Unto the end. A Psalm of David, |
From Zion, perfection of beauty, he shines forth; | 2 when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he went to Bathsheba. |
he is coming, our God, and wil not be silent. Devouring fire ahead of him, raging tempest around him, | 3 Be merciful to me, O God, according to your great mercy. And, according to the plentitude of your compassion, wipe out my iniquity. |
he summons the heavens from on high, and the earth to judge his people. | 4 Wash me once again from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. |
'Gather to me my faithful, who sealed my covenant by sacrifice.' | 5 For I know my iniquity, and my sin is ever before me. |
The heavens proclaim his saving justice, 'God himself is judge.'Pause | 6 Against you only have I sinned, and I have done evil before your eyes. And so, you are justified in your words, and you will prevail when you give judgment. |
'Listen, my people, I am speaking, Israel, I am giving evidence against you, I, God, your God. | 7 For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sinfulness did my mother conceive me. |
'It is not with your sacrifices that I find fault, those burnt offerings constantly before me; | 8 For behold, you have loved truth. The obscure and hidden things of your wisdom, you have manifested to me. |
I will not accept any bul from your homes, nor a single goat from your folds. | 9 You will sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed. You will wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. |
'For all forest creatures are mine already, the animals on the mountains in their thousands. | 10 In my hearing, you will grant gladness and rejoicing. And the bones that have been humbled will exult. |
I know every bird in the air, whatever moves in the fields is mine. | 11 Turn your face away from my sins, and erase all my iniquities. |
'If I am hungry I shall not tel you, since the world and all it holds is mine. | 12 Create a clean heart in me, O God. And renew an upright spirit within my inmost being. |
Am I to eat the flesh of bul s or drink the blood of goats? | 13 Do not cast me away from your face; and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. |
'Let thanksgiving be your sacrifice to God, fulfil the vows you make to the Most High; | 14 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and confirm me with an unsurpassed spirit. |
then if you call to me in time of trouble I wil rescue you and you wil honour me.' | 15 I will teach the unjust your ways, and the impious will be converted to you. |
But to the wicked, God says: 'What right have you to recite my statutes, to take my covenant on yourlips, | 16 Free me from blood, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will extol your justice. |
when you detest my teaching, and thrust my words behind you? | 17 O Lord, you will open my lips, and my mouth will announce your praise. |
'You make friends with a thief as soon as you see one, you feel at home with adulterers, | 18 For if you had desired sacrifice, I would certainly have given it, but with holocausts, you will not be delighted. |
your conversation is devoted to wickedness, and your tongue to inventing lies. | 19 A crushed spirit is a sacrifice to God. A contrite and humbled heart, O God, you will not spurn. |
'You sit there, slandering your own brother, you malign your own mother's son. | 20 Act kindly, Lord, in your good will toward Zion, so that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. |
You do this, and am I to say nothing? Do you think that I am really like you? I charge you, indict youto your face. | 21 Then you will accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations, and holocausts. Then they will lay calves upon your altar. |
'Think it out, you who forget God, or I wil tear you apart without hope of a rescuer. | |
Honour to me is a sacrifice of thanksgiving; to the upright I wil show God's salvation.' |
