NEW JERUSALEMLXX
[For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Poem] God, we have heard for ourselves, our ancestorshave told us, of the deeds you did in their days, in days of old,1 εις το τελος υπερ των αλλοιωθησομενων τοις υιοις κορε εις συνεσιν ωδη υπερ του αγαπητου
by your hand. To establish them in the land you drove out nations, to make room for them you harriedpeoples.2 εξηρευξατο η καρδια μου λογον αγαθον λεγω εγω τα εργα μου τω βασιλει η γλωσσα μου καλαμος γραμματεως οξυγραφου
It was not their own sword that won the land, nor their own arms which made them victorious, but yourhand it was and your arm, and the light of your presence, for you loved them.3 ωραιος καλλει παρα τους υιους των ανθρωπων εξεχυθη χαρις εν χειλεσιν σου δια τουτο ευλογησεν σε ο θεος εις τον αιωνα
You are my king, my God, who decreed Jacob's victories;4 περιζωσαι την ρομφαιαν σου επι τον μηρον σου δυνατε τη ωραιοτητι σου και τω καλλει σου
through you we conquered our opponents, in your name we trampled down those who rose up againstus.5 και εντεινον και κατευοδου και βασιλευε ενεκεν αληθειας και πραυτητος και δικαιοσυνης και οδηγησει σε θαυμαστως η δεξια σου
For my trust was not in my bow, my victory was not won by my sword;6 τα βελη σου ηκονημενα δυνατε λαοι υποκατω σου πεσουνται εν καρδια των εχθρων του βασιλεως
it was you who saved us from our opponents, you who put to shame those who hate us.7 ο θρονος σου ο θεος εις τον αιωνα του αιωνος ραβδος ευθυτητος η ραβδος της βασιλειας σου
Our boast was always of God, we praised your name without ceasing.Pause8 ηγαπησας δικαιοσυνην και εμισησας ανομιαν δια τουτο εχρισεν σε ο θεος ο θεος σου ελαιον αγαλλιασεως παρα τους μετοχους σου
Yet now you have abandoned and humiliated us, you no longer take the field with our armies,9 σμυρνα και στακτη και κασια απο των ιματιων σου απο βαρεων ελεφαντινων εξ ων ηυφραναν σε
you leave us to fall back before the enemy, those who hate us plunder us at wil .10 θυγατερες βασιλεων εν τη τιμη σου παρεστη η βασιλισσα εκ δεξιων σου εν ιματισμω διαχρυσω περιβεβλημενη πεποικιλμενη
You hand us over like sheep for slaughter, you scatter us among the nations,11 ακουσον θυγατερ και ιδε και κλινον το ους σου και επιλαθου του λαου σου και του οικου του πατρος σου
you sell your people for a trifle and make no profit on the sale.12 οτι επεθυμησεν ο βασιλευς του καλλους σου οτι αυτος εστιν ο κυριος σου
You make us the butt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those around us,13 και προσκυνησουσιν αυτω θυγατερες τυρου εν δωροις το προσωπον σου λιτανευσουσιν οι πλουσιοι του λαου
you make us a by-word among nations, other peoples shake their heads over us.14 πασα η δοξα αυτης θυγατρος βασιλεως εσωθεν εν κροσσωτοις χρυσοις περιβεβλημενη πεποικιλμενη
Al day long I brood on my disgrace, the shame written clear on my face,15 απενεχθησονται τω βασιλει παρθενοι οπισω αυτης αι πλησιον αυτης απενεχθησονται σοι
from the sound of insult and abuse, from the sight of hatred and vengefulness.16 απενεχθησονται εν ευφροσυνη και αγαλλιασει αχθησονται εις ναον βασιλεως
Al this has befal en us though we had not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant,17 αντι των πατερων σου εγενηθησαν σοι υιοι καταστησεις αυτους αρχοντας επι πασαν την γην
our hearts never turning away, our feet never straying from your path.18 μνησθησονται του ονοματος σου εν παση γενεα και γενεα δια τουτο λαοι εξομολογησονται σοι εις τον αιωνα και εις τον αιωνα του αιωνος
Yet you have crushed us in the place where jackals live, and immersed us in shadow dark as death.
Had we forgotten the name of our God and stretched out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God have found this out, for he knows the secrets of the heart?
For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered.
Wake, Lord! Why are you asleep? Awake! Do not abandon us for good.
Why do you turn your face away, forgetting that we are poor and harrassed?
For we are bowed down to the dust, and lie prone on the ground.
Arise! Come to our help! Ransom us, as your faithful love demands.
