1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Ma Eliphaz di Theman rispose, e disse:
2 If we say something to you, wil you bear with us? Who in any case could refrain from speaking now?	2 Se noi imprenderemo a parlarti, forse lo prenderai in mala parte; ma chi può rattener la parola, che gli viene alla bocca?
3 You have schooled many others, giving strength to feeble hands;	3 Tu fosti già il maestro di molti, e alle braccia stanche rendesti vigore:
4 your words supported any who wavered and strengthened every failing knee.	4 Le tue parole furon sostegno ai vacillanti, ed alle tremanti ginocchia desti conforto:
5 And now your turn has come, and you lose patience, at the first touch on yourself you are overwhelmed!	5 Ma ora, che il flagello è venuto sopra di te, tu se' abbattuto; ti ha toccato, e ti sbigottisci.
6 Does not your piety give you confidence, and your integrity of life give you hope?	6 Dov' è la tua pietà, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza, e la perfezione del tuo operare?
7 Can you recal anyone guiltless that perished? Where then have the honest been wiped out?	7 Rammentati di grazia, qual mai innocente perì? e quando mai furono schiantati i giusti?
8 I speak from experience: those who plough iniquity and sow disaster, reap just that.	8 Io vidi anzi coloro, che coltìvaron l'iniquità, e seminavano all'anni, e affanni mietevano,
9 Under the breath of God, they perish: a blast of his anger, and they are destroyed;	9 Perire a un soffio di Dio, ed essere consunti da un alito dell'ira di lui:
10 the lion's roars, his savage growls, like the fangs of a lion cub, are broken off.	10 Peri il lion che ruggiva, e la lionessa che urlava, e i denti de' lioncelli furono spezzati.
11 The lion dies for lack of prey and the lioness's whelps are dispersed.	11 La tigre rimase estinta per mancanza di preda, e i lioncini furono spersi.
12 I have received a secret revelation, a whisper has come to my ears;	12 Or un' arcana parola fa detta a me, e quasi di fuga il mio orecchio ne intese il debil suono.
13 by night when dreams confuse the mind and slumber lies heavy on everyone,	13 Nell'orrore di una visione notturna, quando il sonno suole impossessarsi degli uomini,
14 a shiver of horror ran through me and fil ed al my bones with fright.	14 Fui preso da timore, e da tremito, e tutte le mie ossa furon commosse:
15 A breath slid over my face, the hairs of my body bristled.	15 E passando davanti a me uno spirito, si arricciarono i peli della mia carne.
16 Someone stood there -- I did not know his face, but the form stayed there before my eyes. Silence --then I heard a voice,	16 Mi apparve uno, il volto del quale non era a me noto, un simulacro dinanzi agli occhi miei, e udii un suono come di aura leggera.
17 'Can a mortal seem upright to God, would anybody seem pure in the presence of his Maker?	17 Forse un uomo messo al paragone con Dio sarà dichiarato giusto, o sarà egli più puro del suo faccitore?
18 God cannot rely even on his own servants, even with his angels he finds fault.	18 Ecco che quelli che a lui servono non hanno stabilità, e negli Angeli suoi trova egli difetto.
19 What then of those who live in houses of clay, who are founded on dust?	19 Quanto più quelli, che abitano case di fango, i quali hanno per fondamento la polvere, saran consunti come da verme?
20 They are crushed as easily as a moth, between morning and evening they are ground to powder. Theyvanish for ever, with no one to bring them back.	20 Dal mattino alla sera saranno troncati, e perché nissun ha intelligenza, periranno in eterno.
21 Their tent-peg is snatched from them, and they die devoid of wisdom.'	21 E quei, che tra loro primeggiano, saran tolti dal mondo: morranno, e non da sapienti.
