NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:1 υπολαβων δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης λεγει
If we say something to you, wil you bear with us? Who in any case could refrain from speaking now?2 μη πολλακις σοι λελαληται εν κοπω ισχυν δε ρηματων σου τις υποισει
You have schooled many others, giving strength to feeble hands;3 ει γαρ συ ενουθετησας πολλους και χειρας ασθενους παρεκαλεσας
your words supported any who wavered and strengthened every failing knee.4 ασθενουντας τε εξανεστησας ρημασιν γονασιν τε αδυνατουσιν θαρσος περιεθηκας
And now your turn has come, and you lose patience, at the first touch on yourself you are overwhelmed!5 νυν δε ηκει επι σε πονος και ηψατο σου συ δε εσπουδασας
Does not your piety give you confidence, and your integrity of life give you hope?6 ποτερον ουχ ο φοβος σου εστιν εν αφροσυνη και η ελπις σου και η ακακια της οδου σου
Can you recal anyone guiltless that perished? Where then have the honest been wiped out?7 μνησθητι ουν τις καθαρος ων απωλετο η ποτε αληθινοι ολορριζοι απωλοντο
I speak from experience: those who plough iniquity and sow disaster, reap just that.8 καθ' ον τροπον ειδον τους αροτριωντας τα ατοπα οι δε σπειροντες αυτα οδυνας θεριουσιν εαυτοις
Under the breath of God, they perish: a blast of his anger, and they are destroyed;9 απο προσταγματος κυριου απολουνται απο δε πνευματος οργης αυτου αφανισθησονται
the lion's roars, his savage growls, like the fangs of a lion cub, are broken off.10 σθενος λεοντος φωνη δε λεαινης γαυριαμα δε δρακοντων εσβεσθη
The lion dies for lack of prey and the lioness's whelps are dispersed.11 μυρμηκολεων ωλετο παρα το μη εχειν βοραν σκυμνοι δε λεοντων ελιπον αλληλους
I have received a secret revelation, a whisper has come to my ears;12 ει δε τι ρημα αληθινον εγεγονει εν λογοις σου ουθεν αν σοι τουτων κακον απηντησεν ποτερον ου δεξεται μου το ους εξαισια παρ' αυτου
by night when dreams confuse the mind and slumber lies heavy on everyone,13 φοβοι δε και ηχω νυκτερινη επιπιπτων φοβος επ' ανθρωπους
a shiver of horror ran through me and fil ed al my bones with fright.14 φρικη δε μοι συνηντησεν και τρομος και μεγαλως μου τα οστα συνεσεισεν
A breath slid over my face, the hairs of my body bristled.15 και πνευμα επι προσωπον μου επηλθεν εφριξαν δε μου τριχες και σαρκες
Someone stood there -- I did not know his face, but the form stayed there before my eyes. Silence --then I heard a voice,16 ανεστην και ουκ επεγνων ειδον και ουκ ην μορφη προ οφθαλμων μου αλλ' η αυραν και φωνην ηκουον
'Can a mortal seem upright to God, would anybody seem pure in the presence of his Maker?17 τι γαρ μη καθαρος εσται βροτος εναντιον κυριου η απο των εργων αυτου αμεμπτος ανηρ
God cannot rely even on his own servants, even with his angels he finds fault.18 ει κατα παιδων αυτου ου πιστευει κατα δε αγγελων αυτου σκολιον τι επενοησεν
What then of those who live in houses of clay, who are founded on dust?19 τους δε κατοικουντας οικιας πηλινας εξ ων και αυτοι εκ του αυτου πηλου εσμεν επαισεν αυτους σητος τροπον
They are crushed as easily as a moth, between morning and evening they are ground to powder. Theyvanish for ever, with no one to bring them back.20 και απο πρωιθεν εως εσπερας ουκετι εισιν παρα το μη δυνασθαι αυτους εαυτοις βοηθησαι απωλοντο
Their tent-peg is snatched from them, and they die devoid of wisdom.'21 ενεφυσησεν γαρ αυτοις και εξηρανθησαν απωλοντο παρα το μη εχειν αυτους σοφιαν
