1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 A prata tem um lugar donde se extrai, o ouro um lugar próprio, onde se acrisola.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 O ferro tira-se da terra, coisas da e a pedra, derretida no fogo, torna-se em natureza metal.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 (O homem) põe um fim às trevas, e ele mesmo investiga o fim de todas as coisas, (mesmo) a pedra escondida na escuridão e na sombra da morte.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Longe dos povoados abre galerias, ignoradas dos pés dos que passam; suspenso, (em cordas, o mineiro) oscila, longe dos homens (no fundo da mina).
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 Um a terra, que produz o pão, por baixo está como fogo;
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 as suas pedras contêm safiras, e os seus torrões partículas de ouro.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 A águia não conhece esses caminhos, e olho do abutre não os viu;
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 as feras não os trilharam, nem o leão passou por lá.
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 Estende a sua mão contra os rochedos, remexe os montes desde as suas raízes.
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 Cortando os penhascos, abre galerias, e os seus olhos vêem aí tudo o que há de precioso.
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 Investiga também a profundidade dos rios, e põe a descoberto o que estava escondido.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Mas a sabedoria, onde se encontra ela? Qual é o lugar da inteligência?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 O homem não conhece o seu caminho, nem ela se encontra na terra dos mortais.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 O abismo diz: Ela não está em mim; e o mar publica: Ela não está comigo.
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Não é dada pelo mais puro ouro, nem é comprada a peso de prata.
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 Não se põe na balança com o ouro de Ofir, nem com o precioso berilo nem com a safira.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 Não se lhe iguala o ouro nem o vidro (fino), e não é dada em troca por vasos de ouro;
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 O coral e o cristal não se comparam com ela; a sabedoria vale mais que as pérolas.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Não se lhe iguala o topázio da Etiópia, nem é comparada com o ouro mais puro.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Donde vem, pois, a sabedoria, e onde é que se encontra a inteligência?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 Está escondida aos olhos de todos os viventes, até às aves do céu está oculta.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 O inferno e a morte dizem: Aos nossos ouvidos chegou a sua fama.
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Deus conhece o caminho para a encontrar, ele sabe onde se encontra,
24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)	24 porque ele vê até aos confins do mundo, e vê tudo o que há debaixo do céu.
25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Quando deu o seu peso aos ventos, e regulou as águas com medida,
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 quando prescreveu uma lei às chuvas e traçou um caminho aos relâmpagos,
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 então ele a viu e a mediu, e a estabeleceu e a perscrutou.
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 E disse ao homem: O temor do Senhor é a (verdadeira) sabedoria; o apartar-se do mal é a inteligência.
