1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 Wohl gibt es einen Fundort für das Silber, eine Stätte für das Gold, wo man es läutert.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 Eisen holt man aus der Erde, Gestein wird zu Kupfer geschmolzen.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 Es setzt der Mensch dem Finstern eine Grenze; er forscht hinein bis in das Letzte, ins düstere, dunkle Gestein.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Stollen gräbt ein fremdes Volk; vergessen, ohne Halt für den Fuß, hängt es, schwebt es, den Menschen fern.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 Die Erde, daraus das Brotkorn kommt, wird in den Tiefen wie mit Feuer zerstört.
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 Fundort des Saphirs ist ihr Gestein und Goldstaub findet sich darin.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 Kein Raubvogel kennt den Weg dahin; kein Falkenauge hat ihn erspäht.
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 Das stolze Wild betritt ihn nicht, kein Löwe schreitet über ihn.
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 An harte Kiesel legt er die Hand, von Grund auf wühlt er Berge um.
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 In Felsen haut er Stollen ein und lauter Kostbarkeiten erblickt sein Auge.
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 Sickerbäche dämmt er ein, Verborgenes bringt er ans Licht.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Die Weisheit aber, wo ist sie zu finden und wo ist der Ort der Einsicht?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 Kein Mensch kennt die Schicht, in der sie liegt; sie findet sich nicht in der Lebenden Land.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 Die Urflut sagt: Bei mir ist sie nicht. Der Ozean sagt: Bei mir weilt sie nicht.
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Man kann nicht Feingold für sie geben, nicht Silber als Preis für sie wägen.
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 Nicht wiegt sie Gold aus Ofir auf, kein kostbarer Karneol, kein Saphir.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 Gold und Glas stehen ihr nicht gleich, kein Tausch für sie ist Goldgerät,
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 nicht zu reden von Korallen und Kristall; weit über Perlen geht der Weisheit Besitz.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Der Topas von Kusch kommt ihr nicht gleich und reinstes Gold wiegt sie nicht auf.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Die Weisheit aber, wo kommt sie her und wo ist der Ort der Einsicht?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 Verhüllt ist sie vor aller Lebenden Auge, verborgen vor den Vögeln des Himmels.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 Abgrund und Tod sagen: Unser Ohr vernahm von ihr nur ein Raunen.
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Gott ist es, der den Weg zu ihr weiß, und nur er kennt ihren Ort.
24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)	24 Denn er blickt bis hin zu den Enden der Erde; was unter dem All des Himmels ist, sieht er.
25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Als er dem Wind sein Gewicht schuf und die Wasser nach Maß bestimmte,
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 als er dem Regen das Gesetz schuf und einen Weg dem Donnergewölk,
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 damals hat er sie gesehen und gezählt, sie festgestellt und erforscht.
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 Doch zum Menschen sprach er: Seht, die Furcht vor dem Herrn, das ist Weisheit, das Meiden des Bösen ist Einsicht.
