1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 L'argento ha un principio nelle sue vene, e l'oro ha un luogo dov'ei si fonde.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 Dalla terra cavasi il ferro: e la pietra sciolta col fuoco si cangia in rame.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 Egli fissa alle tenebre la lor durazione, e la fine investiga di tutte le cose, ed anche la pietra ascosa nella caligine, e nell'ombra di morte.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Un torrente separa dai viaggiatori, e ad esse non si appressa il piede del povero, e sono in luoghi inaccessibili.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 Una terra, dal cui seno nasceva del pane, è disertata dal fuoco.
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 Havvi un luogo, di cui i sassi sono saffiri, e le sue zolle sono oro.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 Uccello non ne conobbe la strada, e l'occhio dell'avoltoio non giunse a discernerla.

11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 Egli visitò le ime parti de' fiumi, e ne trasse fuori ciò che vi era nascosto.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Ma dov' è, che trovisi la sapienza? e la sede dell'intelligenza dov'è?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 Il pregio di lei non è conosciuto dall'uomo, né ella si trova nella terra di quei, che vivono delle delizie.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 L'abisso dice: Meco ella non è, e il mare confessa: Ella non è con me.
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Ella non si compera coll'oro più fino; né cambiò fassene a peso d'argento.
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 Ella non sarà messa a paragone colle tinte preziose delle Indie, né colla pietra sardonica più pregiata, né col saffiro.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 Non sarà stimato eguale a lei l'oro, od il cristallo, né sarà data in cambio per vasi di pretto oro:
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 Le più eccelse, e pregiate cose non son da rammentarsi in suo paraggio: ma occulto è il luogo onde estraggesi la sapienza.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Non si agguaglerà a lei il topazio d'Etiopia, né le saran poste in confronto le tinture più splendide.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Donde adunque vien mai la sapienza, e quale è la sede della intelligenza?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 Ella è ascosa agli sguardi di tutti i viventi, ella è ignota anche agli uccelli dell'aria.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 La perdizione, e la morte hanno detto: Alle nostre orecchie è giunta la fama di lei.
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 La via per trovarla è nota a Dio, ed egli sa dov'ella dimori.

25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Egli, che diede ai venti il momento, e librò, e misurò le acque.
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 Allorché la legge prescrisse alle piove, e la strada alle sonanti procelle:
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 Allora egli la vide, e la manifestò, e la stabilì, e ne scoperse i segreti.
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 E all'uomo disse: Ecco che il timor del Signore egli è la stessa sapienza, e la fuga del male ell'è la vera intelligenza.
