NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 Il existe, pour l'argent, des mines, pour l'or, un lieu où on l'épure.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 Le fer est tiré du sol, la pierre fondue livre du cuivre.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 On met fin aux ténèbres, on fouille jusqu'à l'extrême limite la pierre obscure et sombre.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Des étrangers percent les ravins en des lieux non fréquentés, et ils oscillent, suspendus, loin deshumains.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 La terre d'où sort le pain est ravagée en dessous par le feu.
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 Là, les pierres sont le gisement du saphir, et aussi des parcelles d'or.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 L'oiseau de proie en ignore le sentier, l'oeil du vautour ne l'aperçoit pas.
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 Il n'est point foulé par les fauves altiers, le lion ne l'a jamais frayé.
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 L'homme s'attaque au silex, il bouleverse les montagnes dans leurs racines.
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 Dans les roches il perce des canaux, l'oeil ouvert sur tout objet précieux.
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 Il explore les sources des fleuves, amène au jour ce qui restait caché.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 L'homme en ignore le chemin, on ne la découvre pas sur la terre des vivants.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 L'Abîme déclare: "Je ne la contiens pas!" et la Mer: "Elle n'est point chez moi!"
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 On ne peut l'acquérir avec l'or massif, la payer au poids de l'argent,
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 l'évaluer avec l'or d'Ophir, l'agate précieuse ou le saphir.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 On ne lui compare pas l'or ou le verre, on ne l'échange point contre un vase d'or fin.
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 Coraux et cristal ne méritent pas mention, mieux vaudrait pêcher la Sagesse que les perles.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Auprès d'elle, la topaze de Kush est sans valeur et l'or pur perd son poids d'échange.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 Elle se dérobe aux yeux de tout vivant, elle se cache aux oiseaux du ciel.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 La Perdition et la Mort déclarent: "La rumeur de sa renommée est parvenue à nos oreilles."
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Dieu seul en a discerné le chemin et connu, lui, où elle se trouve.

25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Lorsqu'il voulut donner du poids au vent, jauger les eaux avec une mesure;
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 quand il imposa une loi à la pluie, une route aux roulements du tonnerre,
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 alors il la vit et l'évalua, il la pénétra et même la scruta.
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 Puis il dit à l'homme: "La crainte du Seigneur, voilà la sagesse; fuir le mal, voilà l'intelligence."
