1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 Certo, l’argento ha le sue miniere e l’oro un luogo dove si raffina.
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 Il ferro lo si estrae dal suolo, il rame si libera fondendo le rocce.
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 L’uomo pone un termine alle tenebre e fruga fino all’estremo limite, fino alle rocce nel buio più fondo.
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 In luoghi remoti scavano gallerie dimenticate dai passanti; penzolano sospesi lontano dagli uomini.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 La terra, da cui si trae pane, di sotto è sconvolta come dal fuoco.
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 Sede di zaffìri sono le sue pietre e vi si trova polvere d’oro.
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 L’uccello rapace ne ignora il sentiero, non lo scorge neppure l’occhio del falco,
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 non lo calpestano le bestie feroci, non passa su di esso il leone.
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 Contro la selce l’uomo stende la mano, sconvolge i monti fin dalle radici.
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 Nelle rocce scava canali e su quanto è prezioso posa l’occhio.
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 Scandaglia il fondo dei fiumi e quel che vi è nascosto porta alla luce.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Ma la sapienza da dove si estrae? E il luogo dell’intelligenza dov’è?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 L’uomo non ne conosce la via, essa non si trova sulla terra dei viventi.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 L’oceano dice: “Non è in me!” e il mare dice: “Neppure presso di me!”.
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Non si scambia con l’oro migliore né per comprarla si pesa l’argento.
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 Non si acquista con l’oro di Ofir né con l’ònice prezioso o con lo zaffìro.
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 Non la eguagliano l’oro e il cristallo né si permuta con vasi di oro fino.
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 Coralli e perle non meritano menzione: l’acquisto della sapienza non si fa con le gemme.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Non la eguaglia il topazio d’Etiopia, con l’oro puro non si può acquistare.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Ma da dove viene la sapienza? E il luogo dell’intelligenza dov’è?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 È nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, è ignota agli uccelli del cielo.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 L’abisso e la morte dicono: “Con i nostri orecchi ne udimmo la fama”.
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Dio solo ne discerne la via, lui solo sa dove si trovi,

26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 quando stabilì una legge alla pioggia e una via al lampo tonante,
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 allora la vide e la misurò, la fondò e la scrutò appieno,
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 e disse all’uomo: “Ecco, il timore del Signore, questo è sapienza, evitare il male, questo è intelligenza”».
