1 Zophar of Naamath spoke next. He said:	1 Sophar di Naamath rispose, e disse:
2 My thoughts urge me to reply to this, and hence the impatience that grips me.	2 Per questo varj pensieri mi nascono l'un dopo l'altro, e la mia mente è portata or in questa, or in quella parte.
3 I have put up with prating that outrages me and now my mind inspires me with an answer.	3 Ascolterò gli insegnamenti, co' quali tu mi correggi, e lo spirito di intelligenza, che ho, risponderà per me.
4 Do you not know, that since time began and human beings were set on the earth,	4 Questo io so, che fin da principio dacché l'uomo fu posto sopra la terra,
5 the triumph of the wicked has always been brief, and the sinner's gladness has never lasted long?	5 Breve fu la gloria degli empj, e il gaudio dell'ipocrita fu come di un istante.
6 Towering to the sky he may have been, his head touching the clouds;	6 Se fino al ciclo si alzerà la sua superbia, e la testa di lui toccherà le nubi,
7 but he vanishes, like a phantom, once for al , while those who used to see him, ask, 'Where is he?'	7 Sarà egli alla fine gettato via come sterco, e quelli che l'aveano veduto diranno: Colui dov'è?
8 Like a dream that leaves no trace he takes his flight, like a vision in the night he flies away.	8 Qual sogno che se ne vola noi troveranno; sparirà come notturno fantasma.
9 The eye accustomed to see him sees him no more, his home wil never set eyes on him again.	9 Gli occhi che l'aveano veduto più noi vedranno, né più lo vedrà in luogo che fu sua stanza.
10 His sons will have to reimburse the poor and his children pay back his riches.	10 I suoi figliuoli saran consunti dalla miseria, e le sue mani renderanno a lui il dolor meritato.
11 His bones used to be ful of youthful vigour: and there it lies, in the dust with him, now!	11 Le ossa di lui saranno imbevute de' vizj di sua giovinezza, i quali giaceran con lui nella polvere.
12 Evil was sweet to his mouth, he would shelter it under his tongue;	12 Perocché quando il male al palato di lui sarà riuscito dolce, egli la nasconderà sotto della sua lingua,
13 cultivating it careful y, he would let it linger on his palate.	13 E lo terrà caro, e noi lascerà, e lo riterrà nelle sue fauci.
14 Such food goes bad in his bel y, working inside him like the poison of a viper.	14 Questo suo pane interiormente nel sen di lui si cangerà in fiele di aspidi.
15 Now he has to vomit up the wealth that he has swal owed, God makes him disgorge it.	15 Ei vomiterà le ricchezze che divorò, e Dio le estrarrà dal suo ventre.
16 He used to suck vipers' venom, and the tongue of the adder kills him.	16 Ei succhierà il capo degli aspidi, e la lingua della vipera l'ucciderà.
17 No more will he know the streams of oil or the torrents of honey and cream.	17 Non vegga egli mai le correnti di un fiume, nè i torrenti di miele, e di latte.
18 When he gives back his winnings, his cheerfulness wil fade, and the satisfied air he had whenbusiness was thriving.	18 Pagherà il fio di tutto quello, che ha fatto, né però sarà egli consunto: proporzionate alla moltitudine de' suoi delitti saran le sue pene.
19 Since he once destroyed the huts of the poor, plundering houses instead of building them up,	19 Perocché egli oppresse, e spogliò i poveri, saccheggiò la casa ch'ei non aveva edificata.
20 since his avarice could never be satisfied, now al his hoarding will not save him;	20 E il ventre di lui fu insaziabile, e quando avrà tutta quello, ch'ei bramava non potrà ritenerne il possesso.
21 since nothing could escape his greed, his prosperity wil not last.	21 Nulla è ritnaso a lui da mangiare, e nulla resterà de' suoi beni.
22 When he has everything he needs, want wil seize him, and misery wil light on him with all its force.	22 Quand' egli sarà, satollo si troverà in istrettezze; proverà grandi ardori, e ogni sorta di dolore sopra di lui piomberà.
23 On him God looses al his burning wrath, hurling against his flesh a hail of arrows.	23 Finisca di empiersi il ventre di lui, affinchè Dio scagli contro di lui l'ira sua furibonda, e piova sopra di lui le sue vendette.
24 If he escapes the weapons of iron, the bow of bronze wil transfix him.	24 Fuggirà la spada di ferro, e intopperà nell'arco di bronzo.
25 Out of his back sticks an arrow, from his gal a shining point. The terrors advance on him,	25 La spada sguainata, e cavata dal fodero è vibrata a recar amarezza; le aure anderanno, e verranno sopra di lui.
26 all the hidden darknesses are waiting to carry him off. A fire unlit by human hand devours him, andconsumes what is left in his tent.	26 Tutto è tenebroso colà dov' ei si nasconde, lo divorerà un fuoco che non alluma: s'ei resterà ancora nella sua tenda, sarà in miseria.
27 The heavens lay bare his iniquity, and the earth rises up against him.	27 I cieli riveleranno la sua iniquità, e la terra porterà testimonianza contro di lui.
28 The income of his house pours away, like the torrents, on the day of retribution.	28 Saranno spersi i rampolli di sua famiglia, saranno gettati a terra nel giorno dell'ira di Dio.
29 Such is the fate God reserves for the wicked, the inheritance he assigns to the accursed!	29 Tale è la sorte serbata all'empio da Dio, e tale è la mercede che renderà il Signore all'opere di lui.
