1 Since I have lost al taste for life, I shal give free rein to my complaining; I shal let my embittered soulspeak out.	1 Io sono stanco della mia vita! Darò libero sfogo al mio lamento, parlerò nell’amarezza del mio cuore.
2 I shal say to God, 'Do not condemn me, tel me what your case is against me.	2 Dirò a Dio: “Non condannarmi! Fammi sapere di che cosa mi accusi.
3 Is it right for you to attack me, in contempt for what you yourself have made, thus abetting theschemes of the wicked?	3 È forse bene per te opprimermi, disprezzare l’opera delle tue mani e favorire i progetti dei malvagi?
4 Are your eyes mere human eyes, do you see as human beings see?	4 Hai tu forse occhi di carne o anche tu vedi come vede l’uomo?
5 Are you mortal like human beings? do your years pass as human days pass?	5 Sono forse i tuoi giorni come quelli di un uomo, i tuoi anni come quelli di un mortale,
6 You, who enquire into my faults and investigate my sins,	6 perché tu debba scrutare la mia colpa ed esaminare il mio peccato,
7 you know very wel that I am innocent, and that no one can rescue me from your grasp.	7 pur sapendo che io non sono colpevole e che nessuno mi può liberare dalla tua mano?
8 Your hands having shaped and created me, now you change your mind and mean to destroy me!	8 Le tue mani mi hanno plasmato e mi hanno fatto integro in ogni parte: e ora vorresti distruggermi?
9 Having made me, remember, as though of clay, now you mean to turn me back into dust!	9 Ricòrdati che come argilla mi hai plasmato; alla polvere vorresti farmi tornare?
10 Did you not pour me out like milk, and then let me thicken like curds,	10 Non mi hai colato come latte e fatto cagliare come formaggio?
11 clothe me with skin and flesh, and weave me of bone and sinew?	11 Di pelle e di carne mi hai rivestito, di ossa e di nervi mi hai intessuto.
12 In your love you gave me life, and in your care watched over my every breath.	12 Vita e benevolenza tu mi hai concesso e la tua premura ha custodito il mio spirito.
13 Yet, al the while, you had a secret plan: I know that you were biding your time	13 Eppure, questo nascondevi nel cuore, so che questo era nei tuoi disegni!
14 to see if I should sin and then not acquit me of my faults.	14 Se pecco, tu mi sorvegli e non mi lasci impunito per la mia colpa.
15 Woe to me, if I am guilty; even if I am upright, I dare not lift my head, so overwhelmed with shameand drunk with pain am I!	15 Se sono colpevole, guai a me! Ma anche se sono giusto, non oso sollevare il capo, sazio d’ignominia, come sono, ed ebbro di miseria.
16 Proud as a lion, you hunt me down, multiplying your exploits at my expense,	16 Se lo sollevo, tu come un leone mi dai la caccia e torni a compiere le tue prodezze contro di me,
17 attacking me again and again, your fury against me ever increasing, your troops assailing me, waveafter wave.	17 rinnovi contro di me i tuoi testimoni, contro di me aumenti la tua ira e truppe sempre nuove mi stanno addosso.
18 Why did you bring me out of the womb? I should have perished then, unseen by any eye,	18 Perché tu mi hai tratto dal seno materno? Sarei morto e nessun occhio mi avrebbe mai visto!
19 a being that had never been, to be carried from womb to grave.	19 Sarei come uno che non è mai esistito; dal ventre sarei stato portato alla tomba!
20 The days of my life are few enough: turn your eyes away, leave me a little joy,	20 Non sono poca cosa i miei giorni? Lasciami, che io possa respirare un poco
21 before I go to the place of no return, to the land of darkness and shadow dark as death,	21 prima che me ne vada, senza ritorno, verso la terra delle tenebre e dell’ombra di morte,
22 where dimness and disorder hold sway, and light itself is like dead of night.	22 terra di oscurità e di disordine, dove la luce è come le tenebre”».
