1 Lo, all this my eye has seen; my ear has heard and perceived it.	1 Ecco, tutto questo ha visto il mio occhio, l’ha udito il mio orecchio e l’ha compreso.
2 What you know, I also know; I fall not short of you.	2 Quel che sapete voi, lo so anch’io; non sono da meno di voi.
3 But I would speak with the Almighty; I wish to reason with God.	3 Ma io all’Onnipotente voglio parlare, con Dio desidero contendere.
4 You are glossing over falsehoods and offering vain remedies, every one of you!	4 Voi imbrattate di menzogne, siete tutti medici da nulla.
5 Oh, that you would be altogether silent! This for you would be wisdom.	5 Magari taceste del tutto: sarebbe per voi un atto di sapienza!
6 Hear now the rebuke I shall utter and listen to the reproof from my lips.	6 Ascoltate dunque la mia replica e alle argomentazioni delle mie labbra fate attenzione.
7 Is it for God that you speak falsehood? Is it for him that you utter deceit?	7 Vorreste forse dire il falso in difesa di Dio e in suo favore parlare con inganno?
8 Is it for him that you show partiality? Do you play advocate on behalf of God?	8 Vorreste prendere le parti di Dio e farvi suoi avvocati?
9 Will it be well when he shall search you out? Would you impose on him as one does on men?	9 Sarebbe bene per voi se egli vi scrutasse? Credete di ingannarlo, come s’inganna un uomo?
10 He will openly rebuke you if even in secret you show partiality.	10 Severamente vi redarguirà, se in segreto sarete parziali.
11 Surely will his majesty affright you and the dread of him fall upon you.	11 La sua maestà non vi incute spavento e il terrore di lui non vi assale?
12 Your reminders are ashy maxims, your fabrications are mounds of clay.	12 Sentenze di cenere sono i vostri moniti, baluardi di argilla sono i vostri baluardi.
13 Be silent, let me alone! that I may speak and give vent to my feelings.	13 Tacete, state lontani da me: parlerò io, qualunque cosa possa accadermi.
14 I will carry my flesh between my teeth, and take my life in my hand.	14 Prenderò la mia carne con i denti e la mia vita porrò sulle mie palme.
15 Slay me though he might, I will wait for him; I will defend my conduct before him.	15 Mi uccida pure, io non aspetterò, ma la mia condotta davanti a lui difenderò!
16 And this shall be my salvation, that no impious man can come into his presence.	16 Già questo sarebbe la mia salvezza, perché davanti a lui l’empio non può presentarsi.
17 Pay careful heed to my speech, and give my statement a hearing.	17 Ascoltate bene le mie parole e il mio discorso entri nei vostri orecchi.
18 Behold, I have prepared my case, I know that I am in the right.	18 Ecco, espongo la mia causa, sono convinto che sarò dichiarato innocente.
19 If anyone can make a case against me, then I shall be silent and die.	19 Chi vuole contendere con me? Perché allora tacerei e morirei.
20 These things only do not use against me, then from your presence I need not hide:	20 Fammi solo due cose e allora non mi sottrarrò alla tua presenza:
21 Withdraw your hand far from me, and let not the terror of you frighten me.	21 allontana da me la tua mano e il tuo terrore più non mi spaventi.
22 Then call me, and I will respond; or let me speak first, and answer me.	22 Interrogami pure e io risponderò, oppure parlerò io e tu ribatterai.
23 What are my faults and my sins? My misdeeds and my sins make known to me!	23 Quante sono le mie colpe e i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere il mio delitto e il mio peccato.
24 Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?	24 Perché mi nascondi la tua faccia e mi consideri come un nemico?
25 Will you harass a wind-driven leaf, or pursue a withered straw?	25 Vuoi spaventare una foglia dispersa dal vento e dare la caccia a una paglia secca?
26 For you draw up bitter indictments against me, and punish in me the faults of my youth.	26 Tu scrivi infatti contro di me sentenze amare e su di me fai ricadere i miei errori giovanili;
27 You put my feet in the stocks; you watch all my paths and trace out all my footsteps.	27 tu poni in ceppi i miei piedi, vai spiando tutti i miei passi e rilevi le orme dei miei piedi.
28 Though he wears out like a leather bottle, like a garment that the moth has consumed?	28 Intanto l’uomo si consuma come legno tarlato o come un vestito corroso da tignola.
