1 Conseils à Lémuel, roi de Massa, qu’il a reçus de sa mère:	1 The words of king Lamuel. The vision wherewith his mother instructed him.
2 Non, mon fils! Non, mon enfant! Toi, mon premier-né, que j’ai appelé de tous mes vœux!	2 What, O my beloved, what, O the beloved of my womb, what, O the beloved of my vows?
3 Ne livre pas ta vigueur aux femmes, ne te laisse pas étreindre par celles qui perdent les rois.	3 Give not thy substance to women, and thy riches to destroy kings.
4 Il ne convient pas aux rois, Lémuel, de boire du vin, ni aux princes d’abuser des liqueurs fortes,	4 Give not to kings, O Lamuel, give not wine to kings: because there is no secret where drunkenness reigneth:
5 car ils pourraient s’enivrer, oublier les décrets, et violer le droit des indigents.	5 And lest they drink and forget judgments, and pervert the cause of the children of the poor.
6 Procure des boissons fortes à celui qui va mourir, donne du vin à qui est dans la tristesse;	6 Give strong drink to them that are sad: and wine to them that are grieved in mind:
7 qu’il boive, qu’il oublie sa misère, qu’il ne se souvienne plus de son malheur.	7 Let them drink, and forget their want, and remember their sorrow no more.
8 Ouvre la bouche en faveur du muet, soutiens la cause de tous les abandonnés.	8 Open thy mouth for the dumb, and for the causes of all the children that pass.
9 Ouvre la bouche et fais une vraie justice aux pauvres et aux affligés.	9 Open thy mouth, decree that which is just, and do justice to the needy and poor.
10 Une femme de caractère, où la trouver? Elle est, de loin, plus précieuse qu’une perle.	10 Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her.
11 Son mari sait qu’il peut compter sur elle: voilà un grand avantage, qui ne se perdra pas.	11 The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils.
12 Elle lui donne du bonheur, et sans mélange tous les jours de sa vie.	12 She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life.
13 Elle s’est procuré de la laine et du lin, car elle travaille d’une main active.	13 She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands.
14 Comme les navires des marchands, de loin elle fait venir son pain.	14 She is like the merchant's ship, she bringeth her bread from afar.
15 Elle s’est levée, il faisait encore sombre, pour distribuer la nourriture à sa maisonnée.	15 And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens.
16 A-t-elle idée d’un champ? le voilà acheté: une vigne qu’a payée son travail.	16 She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard.
17 Elle se met vaillamment à la besogne, car elle a de la force dans les bras.	17 She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm.
18 Elle a vu que ses affaires allaient bien, de toute la nuit sa lampe ne s’est pas éteinte:	18 She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night.
19 elle avait mis la main à la quenouille, ses doigts avaient saisi le fuseau.	19 She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle.
20 Elle a tendu la main vers le pauvre, elle l’a ouverte à l’indigent.	20 She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor.
21 La neige ne lui fait pas peur pour les siens, car tous ont double vêtement.	21 She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for dl her domestics are clothed with double garments.
22 Elle s’est fait des couvertures, et l’habit qu’elle porte, de lin fin et de pourpre.	22 She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple is her covering.
23 Son mari est connu parmi les officiels, car il siège avec les anciens du pays.	23 Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land.
24 Elle vend des draps qu’elle a tissés, le marchand lui a même pris une ceinture.	24 She made fine linen, and sold it, end delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite.
25 Elle rayonne de santé et de dignité, elle envisage l’avenir avec optimisme.	25 Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day.
26 Ce qu’elle dit est plein de bon sens, elle a l’art d’enseigner la piété.	26 She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue.
27 Surveillant les activités de son monde, elle n’est pas de ceux qui mangent sans travailler.	27 She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle.
28 Ses fils ont voulu la féliciter, son mari est le premier à la louer:	28 Her children rose up, and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her.
29 “On ne peut pas compter les femmes vaillantes, mais tu les as toutes surpassées!	29 Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all.
30 Le charme est trompeur, la beauté vite passée, c’est la sagesse qu’on admire chez une femme!	30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Reconnaissez-lui le travail de ses mains: ses œuvres ont mérité un hommage public.”	31 Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.
