VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Vir erat in terra Hus, nomine Job : et erat vir ille simplex, et rectus, ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo.1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.
Natique sunt ei septem filii, et tres filiæ.2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
Et fuit possessio ejus septem millia ovium, et tria millia camelorum, quingenta quoque juga boum, et quingentæ asinæ, ac familia multa nimis : eratque vir ille magnus inter omnes orientales.3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.
Et ibant filii ejus, et faciebant convivium per domos, unusquisque in die suo. Et mittentes vocabant tres sorores suas, ut comederent et biberent cum eis.4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.
Sic faciebat Job cunctis diebus.
Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.
Quadam autem die, cum venissent filii Dei ut assisterent coram Domino, affuit inter eos etiam Satan.6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.
Cui dixit Dominus : Unde venis ? Qui respondens, ait : Circuivi terram, et perambulavi eam.7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'
Dixitque Dominus ad eum : Numquid considerasti servum meum Job, quod non sit ei similis in terra, homo simplex et rectus, ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo ?8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'
Cui respondens Satan, ait : Numquid Job frustra timet Deum ?9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?
nonne tu vallasti eum, ac domum ejus, universamque substantiam per circuitum ; operibus manuum ejus benedixisti, et possessio ejus crevit in terra ?10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.
sed extende paululum manum tuam et tange cuncta quæ possidet, nisi in faciem benedixerit tibi.11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'
Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan : Ecce universa quæ habet in manu tua sunt : tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam. Egressusque est Satan a facie Domini.12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.
Cum autem quadam die filii et filiæ ejus comederent et biberent vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti,13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,
nuntius venit ad Job, qui diceret : Boves arabant, et asinæ pascebantur juxta eos :14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,
et irruerunt Sabæi, tuleruntque omnia, et pueros percusserunt gladio : et evasi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'
Cumque adhuc ille loqueretur, venit alter, et dixit : Ignis Dei cecidit e cælo, et tactas oves puerosque consumpsit : et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'
Sed et illo adhuc loquente, venit alius, et dixit : Chaldæi fecerunt tres turmas, et invaserunt camelos, et tulerunt eos, necnon et pueros percusserunt gladio : et ego fugi solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'
Adhuc loquebatur ille, et ecce alius intravit, et dixit : Filiis tuis et filiabus vescentibus et bibentibus vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti,18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,
repente ventus vehemens irruit a regione deserti, et concussit quatuor angulos domus : quæ corruens oppressit liberos tuos, et mortui sunt : et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'
Tunc surrexit Job, et scidit vestimenta sua : et tonso capite corruens in terram, adoravit,20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself
et dixit : Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meæ, et nudus revertar illuc. Dominus dedit, Dominus abstulit ; sicut Domino placuit, ita factum est. Sit nomen Domini benedictum.21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!
In omnibus his non peccavit Job labiis suis, neque stultum quid contra Deum locutus est.22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.
