NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
When his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him, he made himself stronger against Israel
Constituitque militum numeros in cunctis urbibus Iudae, quae erant vallatae muris; praesidiaque disposuit in terra Iudae et in civitatibus Ephraim, quas ceperat Asa pater eius.
by stationing troops in al the fortified towns in Judah and by garrisoning Judah and the towns ofEphraim which his father Asa had captured.
Et fuit Dominus cum Iosaphat, quia ambulavit in viis patris sui primis et non speravit in Baalim3 Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he fol owed the example of his father's earlier days and didnot have recourse to Baal,
sed in Deo patris sui et perrexit in praeceptis illius et non iuxta peccata Israel.4 but sought Yahweh, the God of his father, fol owing his commandments and not behaving as Israeldid.
Because of this, Yahweh put him in secure control of the kingdom, while al Judah gave Jehoshaphatpresents until ample riches and honour were his.
He was so enthusiastic about obeying Yahweh that once again he abolished the high places andsacred poles in Judah.
Tertio autem anno regni sui misit principes suos Benhail et Abdiam et Zachariam et Nathanael et Michaiam, ut docerent in civitatibus Iudae,7 In the third year of his reign he sent his leading men-Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel andMicaiah, to give instruction in the towns of Judah.
et cum eis Levitas Semeiam et Nathaniam et Zabadiam, Asael quoque et Semiramoth et Ionathan Adoniamque et Thobiam Levitas et cum eis Elisama et Ioram sacerdotes.8 With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; Elishama and Jehoram the priests went with them.
Docebantque in Iuda habentes librum legis Domini et circuibant cunctas urbes Iudae atque erudiebant populum.
They gave instruction in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and went round althe towns of Judah instructing the people.
A panic from Yahweh seized all the kings of the countries surrounding Judah, as a result of whichthey did not make war on Jehoshaphat.
Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a load of silver and the Arabs brought himseven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats.
Crevit ergo Iosaphat et magnificatus est usque in sublime atque aedificavit in Iuda castella urbesque horreorum.12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful. He built fortresses and storage towns in Judah.
Et multae copiae praesto erant ei in urbibus Iudae; viri quoque bellatores et robusti erant in Ierusalem,13 He accumulated ample supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had warriors, outstanding men, inJerusalem.
quorum iste numerus per familias singulorum: in Iuda principes exercitus, Ednas dux, et cum eo robustissimorum trecenta milia;14 According to family, this is how they were classified: Over the commanders of the thousands ofJudah was General Adnah, who had three hundred thousand outstanding men;
et ad latus eius Iohanan princeps et cum eo ducenta octoginta milia;15 Under him was General Jehohanan, who had two hundred and eighty thousand;
ad latus quoque istius Amasias filius Zechri consecratus Domino et cum eo ducenta milia virorum fortium;16 Under him was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered for Yahweh and who had two hundredthousand outstanding men;
de Beniamin autem robustus ad proelia Eliada et cum eo tenentium arcum et clipeum ducenta milia;17 That outstanding soldier, Eliada, represented Benjamin, and he had two hundred thousand menarmed with bow and shield;
et ad latus eius Iozabad et cum eo centum octoginta milia expeditorum militum.18 And under him Jehozabad, who had one hundred and eighty thousand equipped for war.
Hi omnes erant ad manum regis, exceptis aliis, quos posuerat in urbibus muratis in universo Iuda.
These were in attendance on the king, apart from those whom the king had stationed in the fortifiedtowns al over Judah.
