1 Regnavit autem Iosaphat filius eius pro eo et invaluit contra Israel. | 1 When his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him, he made himself stronger against Israel |
2 Constituitque militum numeros in cunctis urbibus Iudae, quae erant vallatae muris; praesidiaque disposuit in terra Iudae et in civitatibus Ephraim, quas ceperat Asa pater eius.
| 2 by stationing troops in al the fortified towns in Judah and by garrisoning Judah and the towns ofEphraim which his father Asa had captured. |
3 Et fuit Dominus cum Iosaphat, quia ambulavit in viis patris sui primis et non speravit in Baalim | 3 Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he fol owed the example of his father's earlier days and didnot have recourse to Baal, |
4 sed in Deo patris sui et perrexit in praeceptis illius et non iuxta peccata Israel. | 4 but sought Yahweh, the God of his father, fol owing his commandments and not behaving as Israeldid. |
5 Confirmavitque Dominus regnum in manu eius, et dedit omnis Iuda munera Iosaphat; factaeque sunt ei infinitae divitiae et multa gloria. | 5 Because of this, Yahweh put him in secure control of the kingdom, while al Judah gave Jehoshaphatpresents until ample riches and honour were his. |
6 Cumque sumpsisset cor eius audaciam propter vias Domini, etiam excelsa et palos de Iuda abstulit.
| 6 He was so enthusiastic about obeying Yahweh that once again he abolished the high places andsacred poles in Judah. |
7 Tertio autem anno regni sui misit principes suos Benhail et Abdiam et Zachariam et Nathanael et Michaiam, ut docerent in civitatibus Iudae, | 7 In the third year of his reign he sent his leading men-Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel andMicaiah, to give instruction in the towns of Judah. |
8 et cum eis Levitas Semeiam et Nathaniam et Zabadiam, Asael quoque et Semiramoth et Ionathan Adoniamque et Thobiam Levitas et cum eis Elisama et Ioram sacerdotes. | 8 With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; Elishama and Jehoram the priests went with them. |
9 Docebantque in Iuda habentes librum legis Domini et circuibant cunctas urbes Iudae atque erudiebant populum.
| 9 They gave instruction in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and went round althe towns of Judah instructing the people. |
10 Itaque factus est pavor Domini super omnia regna terrarum, quae erant per gyrum Iudae, nec audebant bellare contra Iosaphat. | 10 A panic from Yahweh seized all the kings of the countries surrounding Judah, as a result of whichthey did not make war on Jehoshaphat. |
11 Sed et de Philisthim Iosaphat munera deferebant et vectigal argenti; Arabes quoque adducebant pecora arietum septem milia septingenta et hircos totidem.
| 11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a load of silver and the Arabs brought himseven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats. |
12 Crevit ergo Iosaphat et magnificatus est usque in sublime atque aedificavit in Iuda castella urbesque horreorum. | 12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful. He built fortresses and storage towns in Judah. |
13 Et multae copiae praesto erant ei in urbibus Iudae; viri quoque bellatores et robusti erant in Ierusalem, | 13 He accumulated ample supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had warriors, outstanding men, inJerusalem. |
14 quorum iste numerus per familias singulorum: in Iuda principes exercitus, Ednas dux, et cum eo robustissimorum trecenta milia; | 14 According to family, this is how they were classified: Over the commanders of the thousands ofJudah was General Adnah, who had three hundred thousand outstanding men; |
15 et ad latus eius Iohanan princeps et cum eo ducenta octoginta milia; | 15 Under him was General Jehohanan, who had two hundred and eighty thousand; |
16 ad latus quoque istius Amasias filius Zechri consecratus Domino et cum eo ducenta milia virorum fortium; | 16 Under him was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered for Yahweh and who had two hundredthousand outstanding men; |
17 de Beniamin autem robustus ad proelia Eliada et cum eo tenentium arcum et clipeum ducenta milia; | 17 That outstanding soldier, Eliada, represented Benjamin, and he had two hundred thousand menarmed with bow and shield; |
18 et ad latus eius Iozabad et cum eo centum octoginta milia expeditorum militum. | 18 And under him Jehozabad, who had one hundred and eighty thousand equipped for war. |
19 Hi omnes erant ad manum regis, exceptis aliis, quos posuerat in urbibus muratis in universo Iuda.
| 19 These were in attendance on the king, apart from those whom the king had stationed in the fortifiedtowns al over Judah. |
