1 In quel tempo, quando non c'era un re in Israele, un levita, il quale dimorava all'interno delle montagne di Efraim, si prese per concubina una donna di Betlemme di Giuda.	1 At that time, when there was no king in Israel, there was a Levite residing in remote parts of the mountain region of Ephraim who had taken for himself a concubine from Bethlehem of Judah.
2 Ma la concubina in un momento di collera lo abbandonò, tornando a casa del padre a Betlemme di Giuda e vi rimase per quattro mesi.	2 His concubine was unfaithful to him and left him for her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah, where she stayed for some four months.
3 Suo marito si mosse e andò da lei per convincerla a tornare. Aveva preso con sé il suo servo e due asini. Ella lo condusse in casa di suo padre; quando il padre della giovane lo vide, gli andò incontro con gioia.	3 Her husband then set out with his servant and a pair of asses, and went after her to forgive her and take her back. She brought him into her father's house, and on seeing him, the girl's father joyfully made him welcome.
4 Suo suocero, il padre della giovane, lo trattenne ed egli rimase con lui tre giorni; mangiarono e bevvero e passarono la notte in quel luogo.	4 He was detained by the girl's father, and so he spent three days with this father-in-law of his, eating and drinking and passing the night there.
5 Il quarto giorno si alzarono di buon'ora e il levita si disponeva a partire. Il padre della giovane disse: "Prendi un boccone di pane per ristorarti; poi, ve ne andrete".	5 On the fourth day they rose early in the morning and he prepared to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Fortify yourself with a little food; you can go later on."
6 Così sedettero tutti e due insieme e mangiarono e bevvero. Poi il padre della giovane disse al marito: "Accetta di passare qui la notte e il tuo cuore gioisca".	6 So they stayed and the two men ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the husband, "Why not decide to spend the night here and enjoy yourself?"
7 Quell'uomo si alzò per andarsene; ma il suocero fece tanta insistenza che accettò di passare la notte in quel luogo.	7 The man still made a move to go, but when his father-in-law pressed him he went back and spent the night there.
8 Il quinto giorno egli si alzò di buon'ora per andarsene e il padre della giovane gli disse: "Rinfràncati prima". Così indugiarono fino al declinare del giorno e mangiarono insieme.	8 On the fifth morning he rose early to depart, but the girl's father said, "Fortify yourself and tarry until the afternoon." When he and his father-in-law had eaten,
9 Quando quell'uomo si alzò per andarsene con la sua concubina e con il suo servo, il suocero, il padre della giovane, gli disse: "Ecco, il giorno volge ora a sera; state qui questa notte; ormai il giorno sta per finire; passa la notte qui e il tuo cuore gioisca; domani vi metterete in viaggio di buon'ora e andrai alla tua tenda".	9 and the husband was ready to go with his concubine and servant, the girl's father said to him, "It is already growing dusk. Stay for the night. See, the day is coming to an end. Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow you can start your journey home."
10 Ma quell'uomo non volle passare la notte in quel luogo; si alzò, partì e giunse di fronte a Iebus, cioè Gerusalemme, con i suoi due asini sellati, con la sua concubina e il servo.	10 The man, however, refused to stay another night; he and his concubine set out with a pair of saddled asses, and traveled till they came opposite Jebus, which is Jerusalem.
11 Quando furono vicino a Iebus, il giorno era di molto calato e il servo disse al suo padrone: "Vieni, deviamo il cammino verso questa città dei Gebusei e passiamovi la notte".	11 Since they were near Jebus with the day far gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let us turn off to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it."
12 Il padrone gli rispose: "Non entreremo in una città di stranieri, i cui abitanti non sono Israeliti, ma andremo oltre, fino a Gàbaa".	12 But his master said to him, "We will not turn off to a city of foreigners, who are not Israelites, but will go on to Gibeah.
13 Aggiunse al suo servo: "Vieni, raggiungiamo uno di quei luoghi e passeremo la notte a Gàbaa o a Rama".	13 Come," he said to his servant, "let us make for some other place, either Gibeah or Ramah, to spend the night."
14 Così passarono oltre e continuarono il viaggio; il sole tramontava, quando si trovarono di fianco a Gàbaa, che appartiene a Beniamino. Deviarono in quella direzione per passare la notte a Gàbaa.	14 So they continued on their way till the sun set on them when they were abreast of Gibeah of Benjamin.
15 Il levita entrò e si fermò sulla piazza della città; ma nessuno li accolse in casa per passare la notte.	15 There they turned off to enter Gibeah for the night. The man waited in the public square of the city he had entered, but no one offered them the shelter of his home for the night.
16 Quand'ecco un vecchio che tornava la sera dal lavoro nei campi; era un uomo delle montagne di Efraim, che abitava come forestiero in Gàbaa, mentre invece la gente del luogo era beniaminita.	16 In the evening, however, an old man came from his work in the field; he was from the mountain region of Ephraim, though he lived among the Benjaminite townspeople of Gibeah.
17 Alzati gli occhi, vide quel viandante sulla piazza della città. Il vecchio gli disse: "Dove vai e da dove vieni?".	17 When he noticed the traveler in the public square of the city, the old man asked where he was going, and whence he had come.
18 Quegli rispose: "Andiamo da Betlemme di Giuda fino all'estremità delle montagne di Efraim. Io sono di là ed ero andato a Betlemme di Giuda; ora mi reco alla casa del Signore, ma nessuno mi accoglie sotto il suo tetto.	18 He said to him, "We are traveling from Bethlehem of Judah far up into the mountain region of Ephraim, where I belong. I have been to Bethlehem of Judah and am now going back home; but no one has offered us the shelter of his house.
19 Eppure abbiamo paglia e foraggio per i nostri asini e anche pane e vino per me, per la tua serva e per il giovane che è con i tuoi servi; non ci manca nulla".	19 We have straw and fodder for our asses, and bread and wine for the woman and myself and for our servant; there is nothing else we need."
20 Il vecchio gli disse: "La pace sia con te! Prendo a mio carico quanto ti occorre; non devi passare la notte sulla piazza".	20 "You are welcome," the old man said to him, "but let me provide for all your needs, and do not spend the night in the public square."
21 Così lo condusse in casa sua e diede foraggio agli asini; i viandanti si lavarono i piedi, poi mangiarono e bevvero.	21 So he led them to his house and provided fodder for the asses. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22 Mentre aprivano il cuore alla gioia ecco gli uomini della città, gente iniqua, circondarono la casa, bussando alla porta, e dissero al vecchio padrone di casa: "Fa' uscire quell'uomo che è entrato in casa tua, perché vogliamo abusare di lui".	22 While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, who were corrupt, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man whose house it was, "Bring out your guest, that we may abuse him."
23 Il padrone di casa uscì e disse loro: "No, fratelli miei, non fate una cattiva azione; dal momento che quest'uomo è venuto in casa mia, non dovete commettere questa infamia!	23 The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers; do not be so wicked. Since this man is my guest, do not commit this crime.
24 Ecco mia figlia che è vergine, io ve la condurrò fuori, abusatene e fatele quello che vi pare; ma non commettete contro quell'uomo una simile infamia".	24 Rather let me bring out my maiden daughter or his concubine. Ravish them, or do whatever you want with them; but against the man you must not commit this wanton crime."
25 Ma quegli uomini non vollero ascoltarlo. Allora il levita afferrò la sua concubina e la portò fuori da loro. Essi la presero e abusarono di lei tutta la notte fino al mattino; la lasciarono andare allo spuntar dell'alba.	25 When the men would not listen to his host, the husband seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They had relations with her and abused her all night until the following dawn, when they let her go.
26 Quella donna sul far del mattino venne a cadere all'ingresso della casa dell'uomo, presso il quale stava il suo padrone e là restò finché fu giorno chiaro.	26 Then at daybreak the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was a guest, where she lay until the morning.
27 Il suo padrone si alzò alla mattina, aprì la porta della casa e uscì per continuare il suo viaggio; ecco la donna, la sua concubina, giaceva distesa all'ingresso della casa, con le mani sulla soglia.	27 When her husband rose that day and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there lay the woman, his concubine, at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold.
28 Le disse: "Alzati, dobbiamo partire!". Ma non ebbe risposta. Allora il marito la caricò sull'asino e partì per tornare alla sua abitazione.	28 He said to her, "Come, let us go"; but there was no answer. So the man placed her on an ass and started out again for home.
29 Come giunse a casa, si munì di un coltello, afferrò la sua concubina e la tagliò, membro per membro, in dodici pezzi; poi li spedì per tutto il territorio d'Israele.	29 On reaching home, he took a knife to the body of his concubine, cut her into twelve pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel.
30 Agli uomini che inviava ordinò: "Così direte ad ogni uomo d'Israele: È forse mai accaduta una cosa simile da quando gli Israeliti sono usciti dal paese di Egitto fino ad oggi? Pensateci, consultatevi e decidete!". Quanti vedevano, dicevano: "Non è mai accaduta e non si è mai vista una cosa simile, da quando gli Israeliti sono usciti dal paese d'Egitto fino ad oggi!".	30 Everyone who saw this said, "Nothing like this has been done or seen from the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Take note of it, and state what you propose to do."
