1 Essa è il libro dei decreti di Dio, è la legge che sussiste nei secoli; quanti si attengono ad essa avranno la vita, quanti l'abbandonano moriranno.	1 She is the book of the precepts of God, the law that endures forever; All who cling to her will live, but those will die who forsake her.
2 Ritorna, Giacobbe, e accoglila, cammina allo splendore della sua luce.	2 Turn, O Jacob, and receive her: walk by her light toward splendor.
3 Non dare ad altri la tua gloria, né i tuoi privilegi a gente straniera.	3 Give not your glory to another, your privileges to an alien race.
4 Beati noi, o Israele, perché ciò che piace a Dio ci è stato rivelato.	4 Blessed are we, O Israel; for what pleases God is known to us!
5 Coraggio, popolo mio, tu, resto d'Israele!	5 Fear not, my people! Remember, Israel,
6 Siete stati venduti alle genti non per essere annientati, ma perché avete provocato lo sdegno di Dio siete stati consegnati ai nemici.	6 You were sold to the nations not for your destruction; It was because you angered God that you were handed over to your foes.
7 Avete irritato il vostro creatore, sacrificando ai dèmoni e non a Dio.	7 For you provoked your Maker with sacrifices to demons, to no-gods;
8 Avete dimenticato chi vi ha allevati, il Dio eterno, avete afflitto colei che vi ha nutriti, Gerusalemme.	8 You forsook the Eternal God who nourished you, and you grieved Jerusalem who fostered you.
9 Essa ha visto piombare su di voi l'ira divina e ha esclamato: Ascoltate, città vicine di Sion, Dio mi ha mandato un grande dolore.	9 She indeed saw coming upon you the anger of God; and she said: "Hear, you neighbors of Zion! God has brought great mourning upon me,
10 Ho visto, infatti, la schiavitù in cui l'Eterno ha condotto i miei figli e le mie figlie.	10 For I have seen the captivity that the Eternal God has brought upon my sons and daughters.
11 Io li avevo nutriti con gioia e li ho dovuti lasciare con lacrime e gemiti.	11 With joy I fostered them; but with mourning and lament I let them go.
12 Nessuno goda di me nel vedermi vedova e desolata; sono abbandonata per i peccati dei miei figli che deviarono dalla legge di Dio,	12 Let no one gloat over me, a widow, bereft of many: For the sins of my children I am left desolate, because they turned from the law of God,
13 non si curarono dei suoi decreti, non seguirono i suoi comandamenti, non procedettero per i sentieri della dottrina, secondo la sua giustizia.	13 and did not acknowledge his statutes; In the ways of God's commandments they did not walk, nor did they tread the disciplined paths of his justice.
14 Venite, o città vicine di Sion, considerate la schiavitù in cui l'Eterno ha condotto i miei figli e le mie figlie.	14 "Let Zion's neighbors come, to take note of the captivity of my sons and daughters, brought upon them by the Eternal God.
15 Ha mandato contro di loro un popolo lontano, una gente perversa di lingua straniera, che non ha avuto rispetto dei vecchi, né pietà dei bambini,	15 He has brought against them a nation from afar, a nation ruthless and of alien speech, That has neither reverence for age nor tenderness for childhood;
16 che ha strappato i cari figli alla vedova e l'ha lasciata sola senza figlie.	16 They have led away this widow's cherished sons, have left me solitary, without daughters.
17 E io come posso aiutarvi?	17 What can I do to help you?
18 Chi vi ha afflitto con tanti mali saprà liberarvi dal potere dei vostri nemici.	18 He who has brought this evil upon you must himself deliver you from your enemies' hands.
19 Andate, figli miei, andate, io resto sola.	19 Farewell, my children, farewell: I am left desolate.
20 Ho deposto l'abito di pace, ho indossato il cilicio della supplica, griderò all'Eterno per tutti i miei giorni.	20 I have taken off the garment of peace, have put on sackcloth for my prayer of supplication, and while I live I will cry out to the Eternal God.
21 Coraggio, figli miei, gridate a Dio ed egli vi libererà dall'oppressione e dal potere dei vostri nemici.	21 "Fear not, my children; call upon God, who will deliver you from oppression at enemy hands.
22 Io, infatti, spero dall'Eterno la vostra salvezza. Una grande gioia mi viene dal Santo, per la misericordia che presto vi giungerà dall'Eterno vostro salvatore.	22 I have trusted in the Eternal God for your welfare, and joy has come to me from the Holy One Because of the mercy that will swiftly reach you from your eternal savior.
23 Vi ho visti partire fra gemiti e pianti, ma Dio vi ricondurrà a me con letizia e gioia, per sempre.	23 With mourning and lament I sent you forth, but God will give you back to me with enduring gladness and joy.
24 Come ora le città vicine di Sion hanno visto la vostra schiavitù, così vedranno ben presto la vostra salvezza da parte del vostro Dio; essa verrà a voi con grande gloria e splendore dell'Eterno.	24 As Zion's neighbors lately saw you taken captive, so shall they soon see God's salvation come to you, with great glory and the splendor of the Eternal God.
25 Figli, sopportate con pazienza la collera che da Dio è venuta su di voi. Il nemico vi ha perseguitati, ma vedrete ben presto la sua rovina e calcherete il piede sul suo collo.	25 "My children, bear patiently the anger that has come from God upon you; Your enemies have persecuted you, and you will soon see their destruction and trample upon their necks.
26 I miei figli tanto delicati hanno dovuto battere aspri sentieri, incalzati come gregge rapito dal nemico.	26 My pampered children have trodden rough roads, carried off by their enemies like sheep in a raid.
27 Coraggio, figli, gridate a Dio, poiché si ricorderà di voi colui che vi ha provati.	27 Fear not, my children; call out to God! He who brought this upon you will remember you.
28 Però, come pensaste di allontanarvi da Dio, così ritornando decuplicate lo zelo per ricercarlo,	28 As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him;
29 poiché chi vi ha afflitti con tante calamità vi darà anche, con la salvezza, una gioia perenne.	29 For he who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy."
30 Coraggio, Gerusalemme! Colui che ti ha dato un nome ti consolerà.	30 Fear not, Jerusalem! He who gave you your name is your encouragement.
31 Maledetti i tuoi oppressori, che hanno goduto della tua caduta;	31 Fearful are those who harmed you, who rejoiced at your downfall;
32 maledette le città in cui sono stati schiavi i tuoi figli, maledetta colei che li ha trattenuti.	32 Fearful are the cities where your children were enslaved, fearful the city that took your sons.
33 Come ha gioito per la tua caduta e si è allietata per la tua rovina, così patirà per la sua desolazione.	33 As that city rejoiced at your collapse, and made merry at your downfall, so shall she grieve over her own desolation.
34 Le toglierò la gioia di essere così popolata, il suo tripudio sarà cambiato in lutto.	34 I will take from her the joyous throngs, and her exultation shall be turned to mourning:
35 Un fuoco cadrà su di lei per lunghi giorni per volere dell'Eterno e per molto tempo sarà abitata da demoni.	35 For fire shall come upon her from the Eternal God, for a long time, and demons shall dwell in her from that time on.
36 Guarda ad oriente, Gerusalemme, osserva la gioia che ti viene da Dio.	36 Look to the east, Jerusalem! behold the joy that comes to you from God.
37 Ecco, ritornano i figli che hai visti partire, ritornano insieme riuniti dall'oriente all'occidente, alla parola del Santo, esultanti per la gloria di Dio.	37 Here come your sons whom you once let go, gathered in from the east and from the west By the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.
