1 Giònata, vedendo che le circostanze gli erano propizie, scelse uomini adatti e li inviò a Roma per ristabilire e rinnovare l'amicizia con quel popolo.	1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.
2 Anche presso gli Spartani e in altre località inviò lettere sullo stesso argomento.	2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.
3 Partirono dunque per Roma e là entrarono nel consiglio e dissero: "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a rinnovare la comune amicizia e l'alleanza come la prima volta".	3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."
4 E i Romani diedero loro lettere di raccomandazione per le autorità dei vari luoghi, perché favorissero il loro ritorno pacifico in Giudea.	4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.
5 Questa è invece la copia della lettera che Giònata scrisse agli Spartani:	5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il consiglio degli anziani del popolo e i sacerdoti e tutto il resto del popolo giudaico, agli Spartani loro fratelli salute.	6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.
7 Già in passato era stata spedita una lettera ad Onia sommo sacerdote da parte di Areo, che regnava fra di voi, con l'attestazione che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia annessa.	7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.
8 Onia aveva accolto con onore l'inviato e aveva accettato la lettera nella quale vi erano le dichiarazioni di alleanza e di amicizia.	8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.
9 Noi dunque, pur non avendone bisogno, avendo a conforto le scritture sacre che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,
10 ci siamo indotti a questa missione per rinnovare la fraternità e l'amicizia con voi in modo da non diventare per voi degli estranei; molti anni infatti sono passati da quando mandaste messaggeri a noi.	10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.
11 Noi dunque fedelmente in tutte le feste e negli altri giorni prescritti ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle nostre invocazioni, com'è doveroso e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.	11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.
12 Ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.	12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.
13 Noi invece siamo stati circondati da tante oppressioni e molte guerre: ci hanno combattuti i re dei paesi vicini,	13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.
14 ma non abbiamo voluto disturbare né voi né gli altri nostri alleati e amici in queste lotte:	14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;
15 abbiamo infatti dal cielo un valido aiuto per il quale noi siamo stati liberati dai nostri nemici ed essi sono stati umiliati.	15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.
16 Ora abbiamo designato Numenio figlio di Antioco e Antìpatro figlio di Giàsone e li abbiamo inviati presso i Romani a rinnovare la precedente amicizia e alleanza con loro.	16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.
17 Abbiamo quindi dato loro disposizioni di passare anche da voi, per salutarvi e consegnarvi la nostra lettera, riguardante la ripresa dei nostri rapporti e la nostra fraternità.	17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.
18 Voi dunque farete cosa ottima comunicandoci una risposta su queste cose".	18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."
19 Segue ora copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato ad Onia:	19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:
20 "Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia sommo sacerdote salute.	20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.
21 Si è trovato in una scrittura, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che essi sono fratelli e che discendono dalla stirpe di Abramo.	21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.
22 Ora, dal momento che siamo venuti a conoscenza di questa cosa, ci farete cosa gradita scrivendoci sui vostri sentimenti di amicizia.	22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.
23 Noi intanto vi rispondiamo: I vostri armenti e i vostri averi ci appartengono e i nostri appartengono a voi. Abbiamo quindi disposto perché vi sia riferito in questo senso".	23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."
24 Giònata ebbe notizia che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con forze più numerose di prima per ritentare la guerra contro di lui.	24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.
25 Egli si mosse da Gerusalemme e andò loro incontro nella regione di Amat, perché non volle dar loro il tempo di entrare nel suo paese.	25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.
26 Mandò nel loro campo delle spie, le quali tornarono annunciando che essi stavano disponendosi per dar loro l'assalto di notte.	26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.
27 Quando fu il tramonto, Giònata comandò ai suoi di vegliare tutta la notte e di stare con le armi pronte per la battaglia e dispose sentinelle intorno al campo.	27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.
28 Ma anche gli avversari seppero che Giònata e i suoi uomini stavano pronti per la battaglia e furon presi da timore ed esitazione d'animo e allora accesero fuochi nel loro campo.	28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.
29 Giònata e i suoi uomini non si accorsero di nulla fino al mattino, perché continuavano a vedere il bagliore dei fuochi.	29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.
30 Allora si diede a inseguire le loro tracce, ma non poté raggiungerli, perché avevano passato il fiume Elèutero.	30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.
31 Giònata piegò sugli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li assalì e si impadronì delle loro spoglie.	31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.
32 Poi ripartì e andò a Damasco e si diede a percorrere tutto il paese.	32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.
33 Anche Simone fece una spedizione, marciando fino ad Ascalòna e ai vicini posti di guarnigione, poi piegò su Giaffa e se ne impadronì;	33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,
34 aveva sentito infatti che avevano intenzione di consegnare la fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione per presidiarla.	34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.
35 Quando Giònata fu di ritorno, radunò in assemblea gli anziani del popolo e deliberò con loro di costruire fortezze in Giudea,	35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,
36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera tra la città e l'Acra per separare questa dalla città affinché fosse isolata, così che non potessero più né comperare né vendere.	36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.
37 Si organizzarono dunque per ricostruire la città e poiché era rovinato parte del muro sul torrente dal lato orientale, Giònata allestì il cosiddetto Kafenata.	37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.
38 Simone a sua volta ricostruì Adida nella Sefela fortificandola e applicandovi porte e sbarre.	38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.
39 Intanto Trifone cercava di diventare re dell'Asia, cingere la corona e stendere la mano contro il re Antioco,	39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.
40 ma sospettava che Giònata glielo impedisse e, nel caso, gli muovesse guerra. Perciò cercava di averlo nelle mani e di eliminarlo; si mosse dunque e venne a Beisan.	40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.
41 Giònata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila uomini scelti e inquadrati e venne a Beisan.	41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.
42 Trifone, vedendo che era venuto con numeroso esercito, si guardò bene dal mettergli le mani addosso.	42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.
43 Anzi lo ricevette con molti onori, lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di obbedirgli come a lui stesso.	43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.
44 Disse a Giònata: "Perché mai hai disturbato tutta questa gente, non essendoci guerra tra di noi?	44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?
45 Su, dovresti rimandarli alle loro case; tu scegli per te pochi uomini che ti accompagnino e vieni con me a Tolemàide e io la consegnerò a te insieme con le altre fortezze e il resto dell'esercito e tutti i funzionari, poi tornerò indietro e partirò: sono venuto appunto per questo".	45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."
46 Giònata, fidatosi di lui, fece quanto aveva detto e rimandò le truppe che tornarono nella Giudea.	46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.
47 Fece rimanere tremila uomini, di cui duemila lasciò in Galilea e gli altri mille andarono con lui.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.
48 Ma quando Giònata fu entrato in Tolemàide, i cittadini chiusero le porte e si impadronirono di lui e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano entrati con lui.	48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.
49 Trifone mandò poi fanti e cavalli in Galilea e nella grande pianura per liquidare tutti gli uomini di Giònata.	49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.
50 Ma essi avevano sentito dire che Giònata era stato catturato e che era finita per lui e per quelli che erano con lui e, incoraggiatisi l'un l'altro, si presentarono inquadrati, pronti alla battaglia.	50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.
51 Gli inseguitori li videro decisi a difendere la loro vita e se ne tornarono.	51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.
52 Così tutti giunsero senza molestie in Giudea; fecero lutto per Giònata e per quelli della sua scorta e furono presi da grande timore. Tutto Israele si immerse in un lutto profondo.	52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.
53 Tutti i popoli intorno a loro cercarono subito di sterminarli, dicendo appunto: "Non hanno più né capo né sostegno: scendiamo ora in guerra contro di loro e cancelleremo anche il loro ricordo dagli uomini".	53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."
