1 Giònata, vedendo che le circostanze gli erano propizie, scelse uomini adatti e li inviò a Roma per ristabilire e rinnovare l'amicizia con quel popolo.	1 Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.
2 Anche presso gli Spartani e in altre località inviò lettere sullo stesso argomento.	2 He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.
3 Partirono dunque per Roma e là entrarono nel consiglio e dissero: "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a rinnovare la comune amicizia e l'alleanza come la prima volta".	3 So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.
4 E i Romani diedero loro lettere di raccomandazione per le autorità dei vari luoghi, perché favorissero il loro ritorno pacifico in Giudea.	4 Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.
5 Questa è invece la copia della lettera che Giònata scrisse agli Spartani:	5 And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:
6 "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il consiglio degli anziani del popolo e i sacerdoti e tutto il resto del popolo giudaico, agli Spartani loro fratelli salute.	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:
7 Già in passato era stata spedita una lettera ad Onia sommo sacerdote da parte di Areo, che regnava fra di voi, con l'attestazione che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia annessa.	7 There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 Onia aveva accolto con onore l'inviato e aveva accettato la lettera nella quale vi erano le dichiarazioni di alleanza e di amicizia.	8 At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.
9 Noi dunque, pur non avendone bisogno, avendo a conforto le scritture sacre che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,
10 ci siamo indotti a questa missione per rinnovare la fraternità e l'amicizia con voi in modo da non diventare per voi degli estranei; molti anni infatti sono passati da quando mandaste messaggeri a noi.	10 Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.
11 Noi dunque fedelmente in tutte le feste e negli altri giorni prescritti ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle nostre invocazioni, com'è doveroso e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:
12 Ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.	12 And we are right glad of your honour.
13 Noi invece siamo stati circondati da tante oppressioni e molte guerre: ci hanno combattuti i re dei paesi vicini,	13 As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.
14 ma non abbiamo voluto disturbare né voi né gli altri nostri alleati e amici in queste lotte:	14 Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:
15 abbiamo infatti dal cielo un valido aiuto per il quale noi siamo stati liberati dai nostri nemici ed essi sono stati umiliati.	15 For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.
16 Ora abbiamo designato Numenio figlio di Antioco e Antìpatro figlio di Giàsone e li abbiamo inviati presso i Romani a rinnovare la precedente amicizia e alleanza con loro.	16 For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater he son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.
17 Abbiamo quindi dato loro disposizioni di passare anche da voi, per salutarvi e consegnarvi la nostra lettera, riguardante la ripresa dei nostri rapporti e la nostra fraternità.	17 We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 Voi dunque farete cosa ottima comunicandoci una risposta su queste cose".	18 Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.
19 Segue ora copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato ad Onia:	19 And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent.
20 "Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia sommo sacerdote salute.	20 Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:
21 Si è trovato in una scrittura, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che essi sono fratelli e che discendono dalla stirpe di Abramo.	21 It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:
22 Ora, dal momento che siamo venuti a conoscenza di questa cosa, ci farete cosa gradita scrivendoci sui vostri sentimenti di amicizia.	22 Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.
23 Noi intanto vi rispondiamo: I vostri armenti e i vostri averi ci appartengono e i nostri appartengono a voi. Abbiamo quindi disposto perché vi sia riferito in questo senso".	23 We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our's, and our's are your's We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.
24 Giònata ebbe notizia che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con forze più numerose di prima per ritentare la guerra contro di lui.	24 Now when Jonathan heard that Demebius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,
25 Egli si mosse da Gerusalemme e andò loro incontro nella regione di Amat, perché non volle dar loro il tempo di entrare nel suo paese.	25 He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.
26 Mandò nel loro campo delle spie, le quali tornarono annunciando che essi stavano disponendosi per dar loro l'assalto di notte.	26 He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.
27 Quando fu il tramonto, Giònata comandò ai suoi di vegliare tutta la notte e di stare con le armi pronte per la battaglia e dispose sentinelle intorno al campo.	27 Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.
28 Ma anche gli avversari seppero che Giònata e i suoi uomini stavano pronti per la battaglia e furon presi da timore ed esitazione d'animo e allora accesero fuochi nel loro campo.	28 But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Giònata e i suoi uomini non si accorsero di nulla fino al mattino, perché continuavano a vedere il bagliore dei fuochi.	29 Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Allora si diede a inseguire le loro tracce, ma non poté raggiungerli, perché avevano passato il fiume Elèutero.	30 Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.
31 Giònata piegò sugli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li assalì e si impadronì delle loro spoglie.	31 Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.
32 Poi ripartì e andò a Damasco e si diede a percorrere tutto il paese.	32 And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,
33 Anche Simone fece una spedizione, marciando fino ad Ascalòna e ai vicini posti di guarnigione, poi piegò su Giaffa e se ne impadronì;	33 Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.
34 aveva sentito infatti che avevano intenzione di consegnare la fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione per presidiarla.	34 For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.
35 Quando Giònata fu di ritorno, radunò in assemblea gli anziani del popolo e deliberò con loro di costruire fortezze in Giudea,	35 After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,
36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera tra la città e l'Acra per separare questa dalla città affinché fosse isolata, così che non potessero più né comperare né vendere.	36 And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.
37 Si organizzarono dunque per ricostruire la città e poiché era rovinato parte del muro sul torrente dal lato orientale, Giònata allestì il cosiddetto Kafenata.	37 Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.
38 Simone a sua volta ricostruì Adida nella Sefela fortificandola e applicandovi porte e sbarre.	38 Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.
39 Intanto Trifone cercava di diventare re dell'Asia, cingere la corona e stendere la mano contro il re Antioco,	39 Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.
40 ma sospettava che Giònata glielo impedisse e, nel caso, gli muovesse guerra. Perciò cercava di averlo nelle mani e di eliminarlo; si mosse dunque e venne a Beisan.	40 Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.
41 Giònata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila uomini scelti e inquadrati e venne a Beisan.	41 Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 Trifone, vedendo che era venuto con numeroso esercito, si guardò bene dal mettergli le mani addosso.	42 Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;
43 Anzi lo ricevette con molti onori, lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di obbedirgli come a lui stesso.	43 But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.
44 Disse a Giònata: "Perché mai hai disturbato tutta questa gente, non essendoci guerra tra di noi?	44 Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?
45 Su, dovresti rimandarli alle loro case; tu scegli per te pochi uomini che ti accompagnino e vieni con me a Tolemàide e io la consegnerò a te insieme con le altre fortezze e il resto dell'esercito e tutti i funzionari, poi tornerò indietro e partirò: sono venuto appunto per questo".	45 Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 Giònata, fidatosi di lui, fece quanto aveva detto e rimandò le truppe che tornarono nella Giudea.	46 So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.
47 Fece rimanere tremila uomini, di cui duemila lasciò in Galilea e gli altri mille andarono con lui.	47 And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 Ma quando Giònata fu entrato in Tolemàide, i cittadini chiusero le porte e si impadronirono di lui e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano entrati con lui.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.
49 Trifone mandò poi fanti e cavalli in Galilea e nella grande pianura per liquidare tutti gli uomini di Giònata.	49 Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Ma essi avevano sentito dire che Giònata era stato catturato e che era finita per lui e per quelli che erano con lui e, incoraggiatisi l'un l'altro, si presentarono inquadrati, pronti alla battaglia.	50 But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.
51 Gli inseguitori li videro decisi a difendere la loro vita e se ne tornarono.	51 They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.
52 Così tutti giunsero senza molestie in Giudea; fecero lutto per Giònata e per quelli della sua scorta e furono presi da grande timore. Tutto Israele si immerse in un lutto profondo.	52 Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.
53 Tutti i popoli intorno a loro cercarono subito di sterminarli, dicendo appunto: "Non hanno più né capo né sostegno: scendiamo ora in guerra contro di loro e cancelleremo anche il loro ricordo dagli uomini".	53 Then all the heathen that were round about then sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.
