1 I Filistei attaccarono Israele; gli Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei e caddero, colpiti a morte, sul monte Gelboe.	1 The Philistines gave battle to Israel and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fel and wereslaughtered on Mount Gilboa.
2 I Filistei inseguirono molto da vicino Saul e i suoi figli e uccisero Giònata, Abinadàb e Malchisùa, figli di Saul.	2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they kil ed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons.
3 La battaglia si riversò tutta su Saul; sorpreso dagli arcieri, fu ferito da tali tiratori.	3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was wounded by thearchers.
4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiero: "Prendi la spada e trafiggimi; altrimenti verranno quei non circoncisi e infieriranno contro di me". Ma lo scudiero, in preda a forte paura, non volle. Saul allora, presa la spada, vi si gettò sopra.	4 Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it. I do not want theseuncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not doit. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
5 Anche lo scudiero, visto che Saul era morto, si gettò sulla spada e morì.	5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him.
6 Così finì Saul con i tre figli; tutta la sua famiglia perì insieme.	6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his entire household together.
7 Quando tutti gli Israeliti della valle constatarono che i loro erano fuggiti e che erano morti Saul e i suoi figli, abbandonarono le loro città e fuggirono. Vennero i Filistei e vi si insediarono.	7 When al the Israelites who were in the val ey saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Sauland his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.
8 Il giorno dopo i Filistei andarono a spogliare i cadaveri e trovarono Saul e i suoi figli che giacevano sul monte Gelboe.	8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lyingon Mount Gilboa.
9 Lo spogliarono asportandogli il capo e le armi; quindi inviarono per tutto il paese filisteo ad annunziare la vittoria ai loro idoli e al popolo.	9 They stripped him and, taking his head and his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.
10 Depositarono le sue armi nel tempio del loro dio; il teschio l'inchiodarono nel tempio di Dagon.	10 They placed his armour in the temple of their gods and nailed his head up in the temple of Dagon.
11 Quando gli abitanti di Iabes vennero a sapere ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,	11 When al the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 tutti i loro guerrieri andarono a prelevare il cadavere di Saul e i cadaveri dei suoi figli e li portarono in Iabes; seppellirono le loro ossa sotto la quercia in Iabes, quindi digiunarono per sette giorni.	12 the warriors al set out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons away; they brought them to Jabeshand buried their bones under the tamarisk of Jabesh and fasted for seven days.
13 Così Saul morì a causa della sua infedeltà al Signore, perché non ne aveva ascoltato la parola e perché aveva evocato uno spirito per consultarlo.	13 Thus died Saul in the infidelity of which he had been guilty towards Yahweh, in that he had notobeyed the word of Yahweh and because he had consulted a necromancer for guidance.
14 Non aveva consultato il Signore; per questo il Signore lo fece morire e trasferì il regno a Davide figlio di Iesse.	14 He had not consulted Yahweh, who therefore caused his death and transferred the monarchy toDavid son of Jesse.
