| 1 Ecoutez donc, rois, et comprenez! Instruisez-vous, juges des confins de la terre! | 1 Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. |
| 2 Prêtez l'oreille, vous qui dominez sur la multitude, qui vous enorgueillissez de foules de nations! | 2 Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. |
| 3 Car c'est le Seigneur qui vous a donné la domination et le Très-Haut le pouvoir, c'est lui quiexaminera vos oeuvres et scrutera vos desseins. | 3 For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High, who will search out your works and inquire into your plans. |
| 4 Si donc, étant serviteurs de son royaume, vous n'avez pas jugé droitement, ni observé la loi, ni suivila volonté de Dieu, | 4 Because as servants of his kingdom you did not rule rightly, nor keep the law, nor walk according to the purpose of God, |
| 5 il fondra sur vous d'une manière terrifiante et rapide. Un jugement inexorable s'exerce en effet surles gens haut placés; | 5 he will come upon you terribly and swiftly, because severe judgment falls on those in high places. |
| 6 au petit, par pitié, on pardonne, mais les puissants seront examinés puissamment. | 6 For the lowliest man may be pardoned in mercy, but mighty men will be mightily tested. |
| 7 Car le Maître de tous ne recule devant personne, la grandeur ne lui en impose pas; petits et grands,c'est lui qui les a faits et de tous il prend un soin pareil, | 7 For the Lord of all will not stand in awe of any one, nor show deference to greatness; because he himself made both small and great, and he takes thought for all alike. |
| 8 mais une enquête sévère attend les forts. | 8 But a strict inquiry is in store for the mighty. |
| 9 C'est donc à vous, souverains, que s'adressent mes paroles, pour que vous appreniez la sagesse etévitiez les fautes; | 9 To you then, O monarchs, my words are directed, that you may learn wisdom and not transgress. |
| 10 car ceux qui observent saintement les choses saintes seront reconnus saints, et ceux qui s'enlaissent instruire y trouveront leur défense. | 10 For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defense. |
| 11 Désirez donc mes paroles, aspirez à elles et vous serez instruits. | 11 Therefore set your desire on my words; long for them, and you will be instructed. |
| 12 La Sagesse est brillante, elle ne se flétrit pas. Elle se laisse facilement contempler par ceux quil'aiment, elle se laisse trouver par ceux qui la cherchent. | 12 Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. |
| 13 Elle prévient ceux qui la désirent en se faisant connaître la première. | 13 She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. |
| 14 Qui se lève tôt pour la chercher n'aura pas à peiner: il la trouvera assise à sa porte. | 14 He who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for he will find her sitting at his gates. |
| 15 Méditer sur elle est en effet la perfection de l'intelligence, et qui veille à cause d'elle sera viteexempt de soucis. | 15 To fix one's thought on her is perfect understanding, and he who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, |
| 16 Car ceux qui sont dignes d'elle, elle-même va partout les chercher et sur les sentiers elle leurapparaît avec bienveillance, à chaque pensée elle va au-devant d'eux. | 16 because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought. |
| 17 Car son commencement, c'est le désir très vrai de l'instruction, le souci de l'instruction, c'estl'amour, | 17 The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction, and concern for instruction is love of her, |
| 18 l'amour, c'est l'observation de ses lois, l'attention aux lois, c'est la garantie de l'incorruptibilité, | 18 and love of her is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality, |
| 19 et l'incorruptibilité fait qu'on est près de Dieu; | 19 and immortality brings one near to God; |
| 20 ainsi le désir de la Sagesse conduit à la royauté. | 20 so the desire for wisdom leads to a kingdom. |
| 21 Si donc trônes et sceptres vous plaisent, souverains des peuples, honorez la Sagesse, afin de régnerà jamais. | 21 Therefore if you delight in thrones and scepters, O monarchs over the peoples, honor wisdom, that you may reign for ever. |
| 22 Ce qu'est la Sagesse et comment elle est née, je vais l'exposer; je ne vous cacherai pas lesmystères, mais je suivrai ses traces depuis le début de son origine, je mettrai sa connaissance en pleine lumière,sans m'écarter de la vérité. | 22 I will tell you what wisdom is and how she came to be, and I will hide no secrets from you, but I will trace her course from the beginning of creation, and make knowledge of her clear, and I will not pass by the truth; |
| 23 Oh! je ne ferai pas route avec l'envie desséchante: elle n'a rien de commun avec la Sagesse. | 23 neither will I travel in the company of sickly envy, for envy does not associate with wisdom. |
| 24 Une multitude de sages est le salut du monde, un roi sensé fait la stabilité du peuple. | 24 A multitude of wise men is the salvation of the world, and a sensible king is the stability of his people. |
| 25 Laissez-vous donc instruire par mes paroles: vous y trouverez profit. | 25 Therefore be instructed by my words, and you will profit. |
