| 1 cf2D'ami ne deviens pas l'ennemi de ton prochain ; car le méchant aura en partage la honte (l'opprobre) et l'ignominie, ainsi que le (tout) pécheur envieux et à langue double. | 1 Instead of a friend become not an enemy to thy neighbour: for an evil man shall inherit reproach and shame, so shall every sinner that is envious and double tongued. |
| 2 Ne t'élève pas comme un taureau dans les pensées de ton âme, de peur que ta (la) folie ne brise ta force, | 2 Extol not thyself in the thoughts of thy soul like a bull: lest thy strength be quashed by folly, |
| 3 qu'elle (la folie) ne consume tes feuilles, et ne perde tes fruits, et que tu ne sois laissé comme un arbre desséché dans le désert. | 3 And it eat up thy leaves, and destroy thy fruit: and thou be left as a dry tree in the wilderness. |
| 4 Car (une) l'âme maligne perdra celui en qui elle se trouvera, elle le rendra la joie de ses ennemis, et elle le conduira au sort des impies. | 4 For a wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and maketh him to be a joy to his enemies, and shall lead him into the lot of the wicked. |
| 5 La parole douce multiplie les amis et adoucit les ennemis, et la langue aimable abonde (gracieuse produit) dans l'homme de bien (de fruits abondants). | 5 A sweet word multiplieth friends, and appeaseth enemies, and a gracious tongue in a good man aboundeth. |
| 6 Aie beaucoup d'amis (Que beaucoup soient en paix avec toi), mais n'aie qu'un seul conseiller sur mille. | 6 Be in peace with many, but let one of a thousand be thy counsellor. |
| 7 Si tu veux posséder un ami, possède-le après l'avoir éprouvé, et ne te fie pas facilement à lui. | 7 If thou wouldst get a friend, try him before thou takest him, and do not credit him easily. |
| 8 Car tel est ami à ses heures (selon son temps, note), et il cessera de l'être (ne persévérera) au jour de l'affliction. | 8 For there is a friend for his own occasion, and he will not abide in the day of thy trouble. |
| 9 Et tel est ami qui se change en ennemi, et tel est ami qui dévoilera la haine, et les querelles, et les injures. | 9 And there is a friend that turneth to enmity; and there is a friend that will disclose hatred and strife and reproaches. |
| 10 (Mais il est) Tel est ami qui ne l'est que pour la table, et il cessera de l'être au jour de la nécessité (détresse). | 10 And there is a friend a companion at the table, and he will not abide in the day of distress. |
| 11 Si ton ami demeure constant, il sera pour toi comme un (ton) égal, et il agira avec liberté avec les gens de ta maison. | 11 A friend ii he continue steadfast, shall be to thee as thyself, and shall act with confidence among them of thy household. |
| 12 S'il s'humilie devant toi, et s'il s'efface en ta présence, tu auras une excellente amitié de réciprocité (jouiras avec lui d'une bonne amitié). | 12 If he humble himself before thee, and hide himself from thy face, thou shalt have unanimous friendship for good. |
| 13 Sépare-toi de tes ennemis, et prends garde à tes amis. | 13 Separate thyself from thy enemies, and take heed of thy friends. |
| 14 (Un) L'ami fidèle est une protection puissante ; celui qui l'a trouvé a trouvé un trésor. | 14 A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found him, hath found a treasure. |
| 15 Rien n'est comparable à l'ami fidèle, et l'or et l'argent ne méritent pas d'être mis en balance avec la sincérité de sa foi. | 15 Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend, and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity. |
| 16 (Un) L'ami fidèle est un remède de vie et d'immortalité, et ceux qui craignent le Seigneur le trouveront. | 16 A faithful friend is the medicine of life and immortality: and they that fear the Lord, shall find him. |
| 17 Celui qui craint Dieu sera par là même heureux dans l'amitié (jouira également d'une bonne amitié), parce que son ami lui sera semblable. | 17 He that feareth God, shall likewise have good friendship: because according to him shall his friend be. |
| 18 Mon fils, dès ta jeunesse reçois l'instruction (la doctrine), et tu trouveras la sagesse jusqu'à tes (aux) cheveux blancs. | 18 My son, from thy youth up receive instruction, and even to thy grey hairs thou shalt find wisdom. |
| 19 Approche-toi d'elle comme celui qui laboure et qui sème, et attends ses bons fruits. | 19 Come to her as one that plougheth, and soweth, and wait for her good fruits: |
| 20 Tu travailleras un peu pour la cultiver, et tu mangeras bientôt de ses fruits. | 20 For in working about her thou shalt labour a little, and shalt quickly eat of her fruits. |
| 21 Que la sagesse est extrêmement amère aux ignorants ! L'insensé (Celui qui est sans cœur) ne demeurera pas avec elle. | 21 How very unpleasant is wisdom to the unlearned, and the unwise will not continue with her. |
| 22 Elle sera pour eux comme une pierre pesante qui sert à éprouver (Ils s'y essayeront comme à la pesanteur d'une pierre, note), et ils ne tarderont pas à s'en décharger. | 22 She shall be to them as a mighty stone of trial, and they will cast her from them before it be long. |
| 23 Car la sagesse qui rend intelligent (instruit) est conforme à (selon) son nom, et elle ne se manifeste pas au grand nombre ; mais chez ceux qui la connaissent elle demeure jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient Dieu. | 23 For the wisdom of doctrine is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many, but with them to whom she is known, she continueth even to the sight of God. |
| 24 Ecoute, mon fils, et reçois un sage avis (le conseil de l'intelligence), et ne rejette pas son (mon) conseil. | 24 Give ear, my son, and take wise counsel, and cast not away my advice. |
| 25 Engage (Mets) ton pied dans ses entraves (fers), et ton cou dans son collier (ses chaînes). | 25 Put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chains: |
| 26 Baisse ton épaule et porte-la, et ne te dégoûte pas de (souffre pas impatiemment) ses liens. | 26 Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bands. |
| 27 Approche-toi d'elle de tout ton cœur, et garde ses voies de toutes tes forces. | 27 Come to her with all thy mind, and keep her ways with all thy power. |
| 28 Recherche-la, et elle se manifestera à toi ; et quand tu l'auras saisie (embrassée), ne l'abandonne pas : | 28 Search for her, and she shall be made known to thee, and when thou hast gotten her, let her not go: |
| 29 car à la fin tu trouveras en elle le (du) repos, et elle se changera pour toi en (un) sujet de joie. | 29 For in the latter end thou shalt find rest in her, and she shall be turned to thy joy. |
| 30 Ses (fers) entraves seront pour toi une forte protection et un ferme appui, et son collier (ses chaînes) un vêtement de gloire ; | 30 Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and a firm foundation, and her chain a robe of glory: |
| 31 car il y a en elle la beauté (l'honneur) de la vie, et ses liens sont des bandages salutaires. | 31 For in her is the beauty of life, and her bands are a healthful binding. |
| 32 Tu te revêtiras d'elle comme d'un vêtement de gloire, et tu la mettras sur toi comme une couronne de joie. | 32 Thou shalt put her on as a robe of glory, and thee shalt set her upon thee as a crown of joy. |
| 33 Mon fils, si tu m'écoutes avec attention, tu t'instruiras, et si tu appliques ton esprit, tu deviendras sage. | 33 My son, if thou wilt attend to me, thou shalt learn: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be wise. |
| 34 Si tu prêtes l'oreille, tu recevras l'instruction (la doctrine), et si tu aimes à écouter, tu deviendras sage. | 34 If thou wilt incline thy ear, thou shalt receive instruction: and if thou love to hear, thou shalt be wise. |
| 35 Tiens-toi dans l'assemblée des vieillards prudents, et unis-toi de cœur à leur sagesse, afin que tu puisses écouter tout ce qu'ils diront de Dieu, et que leurs excellentes paraboles (de louanges, note) ne t'échappent pas.line Si tu vois un homme sensé, va le trouver dès le point du jour, et que ton pied presse souvent (use) le seuil de sa porte. | 35 Stand in the multitude of ancients that are wise, and join thyself from thy heart to their wisdom, that thou mayst hear every discourse of God, and the sayings of praise may not escape thee. |
| 36 Si tu vois un homme sensé, va le trouver dès le point du jour, et que ton pied presse souvent le seuil de sa porte. | 36 And if thou see a man of understanding, go to him early in the morning, and let thy foot wear the steps of his doors. |
| 37 Applique ta pensée aux préceptes de Dieu, et médite sans cesse ses commandements, et il te donnera lui-même du (un) cœur, et la sagesse que tu désires (un désir ardent de la sagesse) te sera donné(e). | 37 Let thy thoughts be upon the precepts of God, and meditate continually on his commandments: and he will give thee a heart, and the desire of wisdom shall be given thee. |
