NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Christ set us free, so that we should remain free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be fastenedagain to the yoke of slavery.1 State, et nolite iterum jugo servitutis contineri.
I, Paul, give you my word that if you accept circumcision, Christ wil be of no benefit to you at al .2 Ecce ego Paulus dico vobis : quoniam si circumcidamini, Christus vobis nihil proderit.
I give my assurance once again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is under obligation tokeep the whole Law;3 Testificor autem rursus omni homini circumcidenti se, quoniam debitor est universæ legis faciendæ.
once you seek to be reckoned as upright through the Law, then you have separated yourself fromChrist, you have fal en away from grace.4 Evacuati estis a Christo, qui in lege justificamini : a gratia excidistis.
We are led by the Spirit to wait in the confident hope of saving justice through faith,5 Nos enim spiritu ex fide, spem justitiæ exspectamus.
since in Christ Jesus it is not being circumcised or being uncircumcised that can effect anything -- onlyfaith working through love.6 Nam in Christo Jesu neque circumcisio aliquid valet, neque præputium : sed fides, quæ per caritatem operatur.
You began your race wel ; who came to obstruct you and stop you obeying the truth?7 Currebatis bene : quis vos impedivit veritati non obedire ?
It was certainly not any prompting from him who called you!8 persuasio hæc non est ex eo, qui vocat vos.
A pinch of yeast ferments the whole batch.9 Modicum fermentum totam massam corrumpit.
But I feel sure that, united in the Lord, you wil not be led astray, and that anyone who makes troublewith you will be condemned, no matter who he is.10 Ego confido in vobis in Domino, quod nihil aliud sapietis : qui autem conturbat vos, portabit judicium, quicumque est ille.
And I, brothers -- if I were stil preaching circumcision, why should I still be persecuted? For then theobstacle which is the cross would have no point any more.11 Ego autem, fratres, si circumcisionem adhuc prædico : quid adhuc persecutionem patior ? ergo evacuatum est scandalum crucis.
I could wish that those who are unsettling you would go further and mutilate themselves.12 Utinam et abscindantur qui vos conturbant.
After al , brothers, you were called to be free; do not use your freedom as an opening for self-indulgence, but be servants to one another in love,13 Vos enim in libertatem vocati estis, fratres : tantum ne libertatem in occasionem detis carnis, sed per caritatem Spiritus servite invicem.
since the whole of the Law is summarised in the one commandment: You must love your neighbour asyourself.14 Omnis enim lex in uno sermone impletur : Diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum.
If you go snapping at one another and tearing one another to pieces, take care: you will be eaten up byone another.15 Quod si invicem mordetis, et comeditis : videte ne ab invicem consumamini.
Instead, I tel you, be guided by the Spirit, and you wil no longer yield to self-indulgence.16 Dico autem : Spiritu ambulate, et desideria carnis non perficietis.
The desires of self-indulgence are always in opposition to the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are inopposition to self-indulgence: they are opposites, one against the other; that is how you are prevented fromdoing the things that you want to.17 Caro enim concupiscit adversus spiritum, spiritus autem adversus carnem : hæc enim sibi invicem adversantur, ut non quæcumque vultis, illa faciatis.
But when you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.18 Quod si Spiritu ducimini, non estis sub lege.
When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: sexual vice, impurity, and sensuality,19 Manifesta sunt autem opera carnis, quæ sunt fornicatio, immunditia, impudicitia, luxuria,
the worship of false gods and sorcery; antagonisms and rivalry, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels,disagreements,20 idolorum servitus, veneficia, inimicitiæ, contentiones, æmulationes, iræ, rixæ, dissensiones, sectæ,
factions and malice, drunkenness, orgies and al such things. And about these, I tel you now as I havetold you in the past, that people who behave in these ways wil not inherit the kingdom of God.21 invidiæ, homicidia, ebrietates, comessationes, et his similia, quæ prædico vobis, sicut prædixi : quoniam qui talia agunt, regnum Dei non consequentur.
On the other hand the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness,22 Fructus autem Spiritus est caritas, gaudium, pax, patientia, benignitas, bonitas, longanimitas,
gentleness and self-control; no law can touch such things as these.23 mansuetudo, fides, modestia, continentia, castitas. Adversus hujusmodi non est lex.
All who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified self with al its passions and its desires.24 Qui autem sunt Christi, carnem suam crucifixerunt cum vitiis et concupiscentiis.
Since we are living by the Spirit, let our behaviour be guided by the Spirit25 Si Spiritu vivimus, Spiritu et ambulemus.
and let us not be conceited or provocative and envious of one another.26 Non efficiamur inanis gloriæ cupidi, invicem provocantes, invicem invidentes.
