NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Christ set us free, so that we should remain free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be fastenedagain to the yoke of slavery.1 Hac libertate nos Christus liberavit; state igitur et nolite iterum iugoservitutis detineri.
I, Paul, give you my word that if you accept circumcision, Christ wil be of no benefit to you at al .2 Ecce ego Paulus dico vobis quoniam, si circumcidamini,Christus vobis nihil proderit.
I give my assurance once again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is under obligation tokeep the whole Law;3 Testificor autem rursum omni hominicircumcidenti se quoniam debitor est universae legis faciendae.
once you seek to be reckoned as upright through the Law, then you have separated yourself fromChrist, you have fal en away from grace.4 Evacuati estisa Christo, qui in lege iustificamini, a gratia excidistis.
We are led by the Spirit to wait in the confident hope of saving justice through faith,5 Nos enim Spiritu exfide spem iustitiae exspectamus.
since in Christ Jesus it is not being circumcised or being uncircumcised that can effect anything -- onlyfaith working through love.6 Nam in Christo Iesu neque circumcisio aliquidvalet neque praeputium, sed fides, quae per caritatem operatur.
You began your race wel ; who came to obstruct you and stop you obeying the truth?7 Currebatis bene; quis vos impedivit veritati non oboedire?
It was certainly not any prompting from him who called you!8 Haec persuasionon est ex eo, qui vocat vos.
A pinch of yeast ferments the whole batch.9 Modicum fermentum totam massam corrumpit.
But I feel sure that, united in the Lord, you wil not be led astray, and that anyone who makes troublewith you will be condemned, no matter who he is.10 Egoconfido in vobis in Domino, quod nihil aliud sapietis; qui autem conturbat vos, portabit iudicium, quicumque est ille.
And I, brothers -- if I were stil preaching circumcision, why should I still be persecuted? For then theobstacle which is the cross would have no point any more.11 Ego autem, fratres, si circumcisionemadhuc praedico, quid adhuc persecutionem patior? Ergo evacuatum est scandalumcrucis.
I could wish that those who are unsettling you would go further and mutilate themselves.12 Utinam et abscidantur, qui vos conturbant!
After al , brothers, you were called to be free; do not use your freedom as an opening for self-indulgence, but be servants to one another in love,13 Vos enim in libertatem vocati estis, fratres; tantum ne libertatem inoccasionem detis carni, sed per caritatem servite invicem.
since the whole of the Law is summarised in the one commandment: You must love your neighbour asyourself.14 Omnis enim lex in uno sermone impletur, in hoc: Diliges proximum tuum sicutteipsum.
If you go snapping at one another and tearing one another to pieces, take care: you will be eaten up byone another.15 Quod si invicem mordetis et devoratis, videte, ne ab invicemconsumamini!
Instead, I tel you, be guided by the Spirit, and you wil no longer yield to self-indulgence.16 Dico autem: Spiritu ambulate et concupiscentiam carnis ne perfeceritis.
The desires of self-indulgence are always in opposition to the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are inopposition to self-indulgence: they are opposites, one against the other; that is how you are prevented fromdoing the things that you want to.17 Caro enim concupiscit adversus Spiritum, Spiritus autem adversus carnem; haecenim invicem adversantur, ut non, quaecumque vultis, illa faciatis.
But when you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.18 Quod siSpiritu ducimini, non estis sub lege.
When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: sexual vice, impurity, and sensuality,19 Manifesta autem sunt opera carnis, quaesunt fornicatio, immunditia, luxuria,
the worship of false gods and sorcery; antagonisms and rivalry, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels,disagreements,20 idolorum servitus, veneficia, inimicitiae, contentiones, aemulationes, irae, rixae, dissensiones, sectae,
factions and malice, drunkenness, orgies and al such things. And about these, I tel you now as I havetold you in the past, that people who behave in these ways wil not inherit the kingdom of God.21 invidiae, ebrietates, comissationes et his similia; quae praedico vobis, sicutpraedixi, quoniam, qui talia agunt, regnum Dei non consequentur.
On the other hand the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness,22 Fructusautem Spiritus est caritas, gaudium, pax, longanimitas, benignitas, bonitas, fides,
gentleness and self-control; no law can touch such things as these.23 mansuetudo, continentia; adversus huiusmodi non est lex.
All who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified self with al its passions and its desires.24 Qui autemsunt Christi Iesu, carnem crucifixerunt cum vitiis et concupiscentiis.
Since we are living by the Spirit, let our behaviour be guided by the Spirit25 Sivivimus Spiritu, Spiritu et ambulemus.
and let us not be conceited or provocative and envious of one another.26 Non efficiamur inanis gloriae cupidi, invicem provocantes, inviceminvidentes.
