1 Thus, condemnation wil never come to those who are in Christ Jesus,1 Nihil ergo nunc damnationis est iis qui sunt in Christo Jesu : qui non secundum carnem ambulant.
2 because the law of the Spirit which gives life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin anddeath.2 Lex enim spiritus vitæ in Christo Jesu liberavit me a lege peccati et mortis.
3 What the Law could not do because of the weakness of human nature, God did, sending his own Sonin the same human nature as any sinner to be a sacrifice for sin, and condemning sin in that human nature.3 Nam quod impossibile erat legi, in quo infirmabatur per carnem : Deus Filium suum mittens in similitudinem carnis peccati et de peccato, damnavit peccatum in carne,
4 This was so that the Law's requirements might be fully satisfied in us as we direct our lives not by ournatural inclinations but by the Spirit.4 ut justificatio legis impleretur in nobis, qui non secundum carnem ambulamus, sed secundum spiritum.
5 Those who are living by their natural inclinations have their minds on the things human nature desires;those who live in the Spirit have their minds on spiritual things.5 Qui enim secundum carnem sunt, quæ carnis sunt, sapiunt : qui vero secundum spiritum sunt, quæ sunt spiritus, sentiunt.
6 And human nature has nothing to look forward to but death, while the Spirit looks forward to life andpeace,6 Nam prudentia carnis, mors est : prudentia autem spiritus, vita et pax :
7 because the outlook of disordered human nature is opposed to God, since it does not submit to God'sLaw, and indeed it cannot,7 quoniam sapientia carnis inimica est Deo : legi enim Dei non est subjecta, nec enim potest.
8 and those who live by their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God.8 Qui autem in carne sunt, Deo placere non possunt.
9 You, however, live not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God has made ahome in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.9 Vos autem in carne non estis, sed in spiritu : si tamen Spiritus Dei habitat in vobis. Si quis autem Spiritum Christi non habet, hic non est ejus.
10 But when Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin but the spirit is alive because you havebeen justified;10 Si autem Christus in vobis est, corpus quidem mortuum est propter peccatum, spiritus vero vivit propter justificationem.
11 and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead has made his home in you, then he whoraised Christ Jesus from the dead wil give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.11 Quod si Spiritus ejus, qui suscitavit Jesum a mortuis, habitat in vobis : qui suscitavit Jesum Christum a mortuis, vivificabit et mortalia corpora vestra, propter inhabitantem Spiritum ejus in vobis.
12 So then, my brothers, we have no obligation to human nature to be dominated by it.12 Ergo fratres, debitores sumus non carni, ut secundum carnem vivamus.
13 If you do live in that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the habitsoriginating in the body, you will have life.13 Si enim secundum carnem vixeritis, moriemini : si autem spiritu facta carnis mortificaveritis, vivetis.
14 Al who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God;14 Quicumque enim Spiritu Dei aguntur, ii sunt filii Dei.
15 for what you received was not the spirit of slavery to bring you back into fear; you received the Spiritof adoption, enabling us to cry out, 'Abba, Father!'15 Non enim accepistis spiritum servitutis iterum in timore, sed accepistis spiritum adoptionis filiorum, in quo clamamus : Abba (Pater).
16 The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God.16 Ipse enim Spiritus testimonium reddit spiritui nostro quod sumus filii Dei.
17 And if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, provided that weshare his suffering, so as to share his glory.17 Si autem filii, et hæredes : hæredes, quidem Dei, cohæredes autem Christi : si tamen compatimur ut et conglorificemur.
18 In my estimation, al that we suffer in the present time is nothing in comparison with the glory which isdestined to be disclosed for us,18 Existimo enim quod non sunt condignæ passiones hujus temporis ad futuram gloriam, quæ revelabitur in nobis.
19 for the whole creation is waiting with eagerness for the children of God to be revealed.19 Nam exspectatio creaturæ revelationem filiorum Dei exspectat.
20 It was not for its own purposes that creation had frustration imposed on it, but for the purposes of himwho imposed it-20 Vanitati enim creatura subjecta est non volens, sed propter eum, qui subjecit eam in spe :
21 with the intention that the whole creation itself might be freed from its slavery to corruption andbrought into the same glorious freedom as the children of God.21 quia et ipsa creatura liberabitur a servitute corruptionis in libertatem gloriæ filiorum Dei.
22 We are wel aware that the whole creation, until this time, has been groaning in labour pains.22 Scimus enim quod omnis creatura ingemiscit, et parturit usque adhuc.
23 And not only that: we too, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we are groaning insideourselves, waiting with eagerness for our bodies to be set free.23 Non solum autem illa, sed et nos ipsi primitias spiritus habentes : et ipsi intra nos gemimus adoptionem filiorum Dei exspectantes, redemptionem corporis nostri.
24 In hope, we already have salvation; in hope, not visibly present, or we should not be hoping -- nobodygoes on hoping for something which is already visible.24 Spe enim salvi facti sumus. Spes autem, quæ videtur, non est spes : nam quod videt quis, quid sperat ?
25 But having this hope for what we cannot yet see, we are able to wait for it with perseveringconfidence.25 Si autem quod non videmus, speramus : per patientiam exspectamus.
26 And as wel as this, the Spirit too comes to help us in our weakness, for, when we do not know how topray properly, then the Spirit personal y makes our petitions for us in groans that cannot be put into words;26 Similiter autem et Spiritus adjuvat infirmitatem nostram : nam quid oremus, sicut oportet, nescimus : sed ipse Spiritus postulat pro nobis gemitibus inenarrabilibus.
27 and he who can see into al hearts knows what the Spirit means because the prayers that the Spiritmakes for God's holy people are always in accordance with the mind of God.27 Qui autem scrutatur corda, scit quid desideret Spiritus : quia secundum Deum postulat pro sanctis.
28 We are wel aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been cal ed inaccordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good.28 Scimus autem quoniam diligentibus Deum omnia cooperantur in bonum, iis qui secundum propositum vocati sunt sancti.
29 He decided beforehand who were the ones destined to be moulded to the pattern of his Son, so thathe should be the eldest of many brothers;29 Nam quos præscivit, et prædestinavit conformes fieri imaginis Filii sui, ut sit ipse primogenitus in multis fratribus.
30 it was those so destined that he cal ed; those that he cal ed, he justified, and those that he hasjustified he has brought into glory.30 Quos autem prædestinavit, hos et vocavit : et quos vocavit, hos et justificavit : quos autem justificavit, illos et glorificavit.
31 After saying this, what can we add? If God is for us, who can be against us?31 Quid ergo dicemus ad hæc ? si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos ?
32 Since he did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for the sake of all of us, then can we not expectthat with him he wil freely give us al his gifts?32 Qui etiam proprio Filio suo non pepercit, sed pro nobis omnibus tradidit illum : quomodo non etiam cum illo omnia nobis donavit ?
33 Who can bring any accusation against those that God has chosen? When God grants saving justice33 Quis accusabit adversus electos Dei ? Deus qui justificat,
34 who can condemn? Are we not sure that it is Christ Jesus, who died -- yes and more, who was raised from the dead and is at God's right hand -- and who is adding his plea for us?34 quis est qui condemnet ? Christus Jesus, qui mortuus est, immo qui et resurrexit, qui est ad dexteram Dei, qui etiam interpellat pro nobis.
35 Can anything cut us off from the love of Christ -- can hardships or distress, or persecution, or lack offood and clothing, or threats or violence;35 Quis ergo nos separabit a caritate Christi ? tribulatio ? an angustia ? an fames ? an nuditas ? an periculum ? an persecutio ? an gladius ?
36 as scripture says: For your sake we are being massacred al day long, treated as sheep to beslaughtered?36 (Sicut scriptum est : Quia propter te mortificamur tota die :
æstimati sumus sicut oves occisionis.)
37 No; we come through al these things triumphantly victorious, by the power of him who loved us.37 Sed in his omnibus superamus propter eum qui dilexit nos.
38 For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nothing already inexistence and nothing stil to come, nor any power,38 Certus sum enim quia neque mors, neque vita, neque angeli, neque principatus, neque virtutes, neque instantia, neque futura, neque fortitudo,
39 nor the heights nor the depths, nor any created thing whatever, wil be able to come between us andthe love of God, known to us in Christ Jesus our Lord.39 neque altitudo, neque profundum, neque creatura alia poterit nos separare a caritate Dei, quæ est in Christo Jesu Domino nostro.
