1 When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-	1 Or quando Gesù venne a risapere come ai Farisei era noto che lui faceva più discepoli e battezzava a più di Giovanni
2 though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-	2 (quanttunque Gesù non battezzasse, ma i suoi discepoli),
3 he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.	3 lasciò la Giudea e di nuovo se ne andò nella Galilea.
4 He had to pass through Samaria.	4 Doveva quindi passare per la Samaria.
5 On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.	5 Giunse pertanto ad una città della Samaria, detta Sichar, vicino alla tenuta che da Giacobbe fu data al suo figlio Giuseppe,
6 Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.	6 dove era pure il pozzo di Giacobbe. Or dunque Gesù, stanco del viaggio, stava a sedere, così com'era, sul pozzo. Era circa l'ora sesta.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'	7 Venne ad attinger acqua una Samaritana. Gesù le disse: Dammi da bere.
8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.	8 I suoi discepoli erano andati in città a comprar da mangiare.
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.	9 Ma la Samaritana gli rispose: Come mai tu che sei giudeo chiedi da bere a me che sono Samaritana? chè i giudei non hanno relazione coi Samaritani.
10 Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.	10 Gesù le rispose: Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio, e chi è che ti dice: Dammi da bere, tu stessa forse ne avresti chiesto a lui, che t'avrebbe dato acqua viva.
11 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?	11 La donna gli disse: Signore, non hai con che attingere e il pozzo è profondo, donde hai quest'acqua viva?
12 Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'	12 Sei tu forse più di Giacobbe nostro padre, che diede a noi questo pozzo, e vi bevve lui stesso e i suoi figli e il suo bestiame?
13 Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;	13 E Gesù le rispose: Chi beve di quest'acqua tornerà ad aver sete; ma chi beve l'acqua che gli darò io, non avrà più sete in eterno;
14 but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.	14 chè anzi l'acqua da me data diventerà in lui fontana d'acqua viva zampillante in vita eterna.
15 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'	15 E la donna: Signore, dammi di quest'acqua, affinchè non abbia mai più sete e non abbia a venir qua per attingere.
16 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'	16 Gesù le disse: Va' a chiamare tuo marito e ritorna qui.
17 The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";	17 Non ho marito, rispose la donna. E Gesù: hai detto bene, non ho marito,
18 for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'	18 perchè ne hai avuti cinque e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito: in questo hai detto la verità.
19 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.	19 Gli disse la donna: Signore, m'accorgo che tu sei profeta.
20 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'	20 I nostri padri, hanno adorato su questo monte e voi dite che il luogo dove bisogna adorare è in Gerusalemme.
21 Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.	21 Gesù le rispose: Credimi, donna; è venuto il tempo in cui nè su questo monte nè in Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre.
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.	22 Voi adorate quello che non conoscete; noi adoriamo quello che conosciamo: perchè la salvezza vien dai Giudei.
23 But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.	23 Ma l'ora viene, anzi è questa, in cui i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità. Chè il Padre vuol tali adoratori.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.	24 Dio è spirito e quei che lo adorano devon adorarlo in spirito e verità.
25 The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'	25 Gli disse la donna: So che ha da venire il Messia, che vuol dire Cristo; quando sarà venuto lui, ci istruirà di tutto.
26 Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'	26 E Gesù a lei: Son io che ti parlo.
27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'	27 In quel momento arrivarono i suoi discepoli e si maravigliarono che parlasse con una donna. Nessuno però gli disse: Che cerchi? o di che parli con lei?
28 The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,	28 Ma la donna lasciò la sua brocca e andò in città a dire a quella gente:
29 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'	29 Venite a vedere un uomo il quale mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto. Che sia il Cristo?
30 This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.	30 Uscirono pertanto dalla città e andarono da lui.
31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';	31 In quel frattempo i discepoli lo pregavano dicendo: Maestro, mangia.
32 but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'	32 Ma egli rispose loro: Io mi nutro di un cibo che voi non conoscete.
33 So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'	33 I discepoli dicevan perciò tra loro: Forse qualcuno gli ha portato da mangiare?
34 But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.	34 Gesù disse loro: Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato e così compiere l'opera sua.
35 Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!	35 Non dite voi: Ancora quattro mesi e poi vien la mietitura? Ecco io vi dico: alzate gli occhi e mirate le campagne che già biondeggiano per le messi.
36 Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.	36 E chi miete riceve la mercede e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, sicché ne goda insieme chi semina e chi miete.
37 For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;	37 In questo proprio s'avvera quel proverbio: Altri semina ed altri miete.
38 I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.	38 Io vi ho mandati a mietere dove non avete faticato; altri hanno lavorato e voi siete sottentrati nel loro lavoro.
39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'	39 Or molti Samaritani della città credettero in lui per le parole della donna che attestava: M'ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto.
40 So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and	40 Andati adunque da lui quei Samaritani lo pregavano a trattenersi con loro. E ci rimase due giorni.
41 many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;	41 E molti più credettero in virtù della sua parola,
42 and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'	42 e dicevano alla donna: Noi non crediamo già per la tua parola, perchè abbiamo noi stessi udito e conosciuto che colui è veramente il Salvatore del mondo.
43 When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.	43 Passati quei due giorni se ne partì e andò nella Galilea.
44 He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.	44 Perchè lo stesso Gesù aveva affermato che non gode stima un profeta nella sua patria.
45 On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.	45 E giunto che fu nella Galilea, i Galilei lo accolsero, perchè avevan vedute tutte le cose che aveva fatte in Gerusalemme durante la festa, alla quale anch'essi erano andati.
46 He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;	46 Si recò adunque a Cana di Galilea dove aveva convertito l'acqua in vino. E c'era un regio ufficiale il cui figlio era ammalato in Cafarnao.
47 hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.	47 Ed avendo egli sentito dire che Gesù dalla Giudea era venuto in Galilea, andò a trovarlo e lo pregò di recarsi a guarire il suo figlio che era moribondo.
48 Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'	48 E Gesù gli disse: Se non vedete segni e prodigi non, credete.
49 'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'	49 E l'ufficiale regio: Signore, vieni prima che muoia il mio figliuolo.
50 'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;	50 Gesù gli disse: Va', il tuo figlio vive. Quel l'uomo prestò fede alle parole dettegli da Gesù e partì.
51 and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.	51 E avanti che arrivasse a casa gli corsero incontro i servi con la notizia che il suo figlio viveva.
52 He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'	52 Domandò loro pertanto in che ora avesse cominciato a star meglio. E quelli risposero: Ieri all'ora settima lo lasciò la febbre.
53 The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.	53 Allora il padre notò essere quella appunto l'ora in cui Gesù gli aveva detto: Il tuo figlio vive; e credette lui con tutta la sua famiglia.
54 This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.	54 Questo nuovo secondo miracolo Gesù lo fece quando tornò dalla Giudea in Galilea.
