NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-1 Ut ergo cognovit Iesus quia audierunt pharisaei quia Iesus pluresdiscipulos facit et baptizat quam Ioannes
though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-2 — quamquam Iesus ipse nonbaptizaret sed discipuli eius —
he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.3 reliquit Iudaeam et abiit iterum inGalilaeam.
He had to pass through Samaria.4 Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam.
On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.5 Venit ergo incivitatem Samariae, quae dicitur Sichar, iuxta praedium, quod dedit Iacob Iosephfilio suo;
Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.6 erat autem ibi fons Iacob. Iesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere sedebatsic super fontem; hora erat quasi sexta.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'7 Venit mulier de Samaria haurireaquam. Dicit ei Iesus: “ Da mihi bibere ”;
His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.8 discipuli enim eius abierant incivitatem, ut cibos emerent.
The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.9 Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana: “ Quomodotu, Iudaeus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quae sum mulier Samaritana? ”. Nonenim coutuntur Iudaei Samaritanis.
Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.10 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “ Si sciresdonum Dei, et quis est, qui dicit tibi: “Da mihi bibere”, tu forsitanpetisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam ”.
'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?11 Dicit ei mulier: “ Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est;unde ergo habes aquam vivam?
Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'12 Numquid tu maior es patre nostro Iacob, quidedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit et filii eius et pecora eius? ”.
Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;13 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “ Omnis, qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum;
but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.14 qui autem biberit ex aqua, quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in aeternum; sed aqua,quam dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquae salientis in vitam aeternam ”.
'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'15 Dicit adeum mulier: “ Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam neque veniam huchaurire ”.
'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'16 Dicit ei: “ Vade, voca virum tuum et veni huc ”.
The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";17 Respondit mulier et dixit ei: “ Non habeo virum ”. Dicit ei Iesus: “ Benedixisti: “Non habeo virum”;
for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'18 quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quemhabes, non est tuus vir. Hoc vere dixisti ”.
'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.19 Dicit ei mulier: “ Domine, video quia propheta es tu.
'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'20 Patres nostri inmonte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis quia in Hierosolymis est locus, ubiadorare oportet ”.
Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.21 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Crede mihi, mulier, quia venit hora,quando neque in monte hoc neque in Hierosolymis adorabitis Patrem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.22 Vosadoratis, quod nescitis; nos adoramus, quod scimus, quia salus ex Iudaeis est.
But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.23 Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem inSpiritu et veritate; nam et Pater tales quaerit, qui adorent eum.
God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.24 Spiritusest Deus, et eos, qui adorant eum, in Spiritu et veritate oportet adorare ”.
The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'25 Dicit ei mulier: “ Scio quia Messias venit — qui dicitur Christus C; cumvenerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia ”.
Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'26 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Ego sum, quiloquor tecum ”.
At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'27 Et continuo venerunt discipuli eius et mirabantur quia cum muliereloquebatur; nemo tamen dixit: “ Quid quaeris aut quid loqueris cum ea? ”.
The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,28 Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier et abiit in civitatem et dicit illishominibus:
'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'29 “ Venite, videte hominem, qui dixit mihi omnia, quaecumque feci;numquid ipse est Christus? ”.
This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.30 Exierunt de civitate et veniebant ad eum.
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';31 Interea rogabant eum discipuli dicentes: “ Rabbi, manduca ”.
but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'32 Illeautem dixit eis: “ Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis ”.
So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'33 Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem: “ Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?”.
But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.34 Dicit eis Iesus: “ Meus cibus est, ut faciam voluntatem eius, quimisit me, et ut perficiam opus eius.
Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!35 Nonne vos dicitis: “Adhuc quattuormenses sunt, et messis venit”? Ecce dico vobis: Levate oculos vestros etvidete regiones, quia albae sunt ad messem! Iam
Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.36 qui metit, mercedem accipitet congregat fructum in vitam aeternam, ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat et quimetit.
For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;37 In hoc enim est verbum verum: Alius est qui seminat, et alius est quimetit.
I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.38 Ego misi vos metere, quod vos non laborastis; alii laboraverunt, etvos in laborem eorum introistis ”.
Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'39 Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum propter verbummulieris testimonium perhibentis: “ Dixit mihi omnia, quaecumque feci! ”.
So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and40 Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum, ut apud ipsos maneret;et mansit ibi duos dies.
many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;41 Et multo plures crediderunt propter sermonem eius;
and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'42 et mulieri dicebant: “ Iam non propter tuam loquelam credimus; ipsi enimaudivimus et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi! ”.
When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.43 Post duos autem dies exiit inde in Galilaeam;
He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.44 ipse enim Iesus testimoniumperhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.
On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.45 Cum ergo venissetin Galilaeam, exceperunt eum Galilaei, cum omnia vidissent, quae feceratHierosolymis in die festo; et ipsi enim venerant in diem festum.
He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;46 Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilaeae, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidamregius, cuius filius infirmabatur Capharnaum;
hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.47 hic, cum audisset quia Iesusadvenerit a Iudaea in Galilaeam, abiit ad eum et rogabat, ut descenderet etsanaret filium eius; incipiebat enim mori.
Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'48 Dixit ergo Iesus ad eum: “ Nisisigna et prodigia videritis, non credetis ”.
'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'49 Dicit ad eum regius: “Domine, descende priusquam moriatur puer meus ”.
'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;50 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Vade.Filius tuus vivit ”. Credidit homo sermoni, quem dixit ei Iesus, et ibat.
and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.51 Iam autem eo descendente, servi eius occurrerunt ei dicentes quia puer eiusvivit.
He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'52 Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis, in qua melius habuerit. Dixerunt ergoei: “ Heri hora septima reliquit eum febris ”.
The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.53 Cognovit ergo pater quiailla hora erat, in qua dixit ei Iesus: “ Filius tuus vivit ”, et 54 This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.54 Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Iesus,cum venisset a Iudaea in Galilaeam.
