When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-1 And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John,
though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-2 (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but only his disciples)
he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.3 he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee.
He had to pass through Samaria.4 Now he needed to cross through Samaria.
On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.5 Therefore, he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.6 And Jacob’s well was there. And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, was sitting in a certain way on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'7 A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.”
His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.8 For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.9 And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.
Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.10 Jesus responded and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ perhaps you would have made a request of him, and he would have given you living water.”
'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?11 The woman said to him: “Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water, and the well is deep. From where, then, do you have living water?
Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'12 Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and who drank from it, with his sons and his cattle?”
Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;13 Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.
but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.14 Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”
'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'15 The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not thirst and may not come here to draw water.”
'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and return here.”
The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";17 The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’
for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'18 For you have had five husbands, but he whom you have now is not your husband. You have spoken this in truth.”
'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.19 The woman said to him: “Lord, I see that you are a Prophet.
'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.21 Jesus said to her: “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know. For salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.23 But the hour is coming, and it is now, when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him.
God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.24 God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'25 The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.”
Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'26 Jesus said to her: “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.”
At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'27 And then his disciples arrived. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman. Yet no one said: “What are you seeking?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”
The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,28 And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there:
'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'29 “Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?”
This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.30 Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';31 Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat which you do not know.”
So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'33 Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.34 Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of the One who sent me, so that I may perfect his work.
Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside; for it is already ripe for the harvest.
Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.36 For he who reaps, receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;37 For in this the word is true: that it is one who sows, and it is another who reaps.
I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.38 I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'39 Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.”
So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and40 Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days.
many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;41 And many more believed in him, because of his own word.
and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'42 And they said to the woman: “Now we believe, not because of your speech, but because we ourselves have heard him, and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”
When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.43 Then, after two days, he departed from there, and he traveled into Galilee.
He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.44 For Jesus himself offered testimony that a Prophet has no honor in his own country.
On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.45 And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast. For they also went to the feast day.
He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;46 Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, where he made water into wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.47 Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, he sent to him and begged him to come down and heal his son. For he was beginning to die.
Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'48 Therefore, Jesus said to him, “Unless you have seen signs and wonders, you do not believe.”
'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'49 The ruler said to him, “Lord, come down before my son dies.”
'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;50 Jesus said to him, “Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and so he went away.
and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.51 Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive.
He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'52 Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better. And they said to him, “Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”
The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.53 Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And both he and his entire household believed.
This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.54 This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.
