1 When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-	1 - Quando Gesù ebbe saputo che i Farisei avevano udito ch'egli faceva più discepoli di Giovanni e battezzava
2 though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-	2 - quantunque non Gesù ma i suoi discepoli battezzassero -
3 he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.	3 lasciò la Giudea e se n'andò novamente in Galilea,
4 He had to pass through Samaria.	4 attraversando com'era necessario la Samaria.
5 On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.	5 Venne dunque in una città di Samaria, chiamata Sicar, vicina al campo che Giacobbe aveva dato a suo figlio Giuseppe,
6 Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.	6 dov'era il pozzo di Giacobbe. Gesù, stanco dal viaggio, si sedette così, sopra il pozzo. Era quasi l'ora sesta.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'	7 Venne una donna Samaritana ad attinger acqua. Gesù le disse: «Dammi da bere»
8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.	8 (i suoi discepoli infatti erano andati in città per comprarsi da mangiare).
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.	9 La donna Samaritana rispose: «Come mai tu, Giudeo, domandi da bere a me, che sono Samaritana?». I Giudei infatti non vanno d'accordo coi Samaritani.
10 Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.	10 Gesù riprese: «Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è Colui che ti dice:- Dammi da bere -, tu stessa gli avresti fatta questa domanda, ed egli ti avrebbe data dell'acqua viva».
11 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?	11 «Signore», gli disse la donna «tu non hai con che attinger acqua e il pozzo è profondo; donde dunque hai tu dell'acqua viva?
12 Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'	12 Sei forse da più del padre nostro Giacobbe, il quale ci ha dato questo pozzo e ne bevve egli stesso ed i suoi figli ed i suoi armenti?».
13 Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;	13 Gesù le rispose: «Chi beve di quest'acqua avrà sete ancora; chi invece beve dell'acqua che io gli darò non avrà più sete;
14 but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.	14 anzi l'acqua data da me diventerà in lui una sorgente d'acqua zampillante nella vita eterna».
15 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'	15 La donna gli disse: «Signore, dammi quest'acqua, e io non avrò più sete e non verrò più qua ad attingere».
16 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'	16 Gesù le disse: «Va' a chiamare tuo marito e torna qua».
17 The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";	17 La donna rispose: «Non ho marito». E Gesù soggiunse: «Bene dicesti: - Non ho marito, -
18 for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'	18 perchè hai avuto cinque mariti e quello che hai attualmente non è tuo marito; e però hai detto la verità».
19 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.	19 La donna gli disse: «Signore, vedo che sei un profeta.
20 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'	20 I nostri padri hanno adorato su questo monte, mentre voi dite che il luogo dove bisogna adorare è Gerusalemme».
21 Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.	21 E Gesù: «Credimi, donna; viene l'ora in cui nè su questo monte nè in Gerusalemme adorerete più il Padre.
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.	22 Voi adorate quel che non conoscete, noi adoriamo quel che conosciamo, perchè la salute viene dai Giudei.
23 But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.	23 Ma viene l'ora, ed è questa, in cui i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in ispirito e verità, chè tali sono appunto gli adoratori che il padre domanda.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.	24 Iddio è spirito, e quelli che lo adorano lo devono adorare in ispirito e verità».
25 The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'	25 La donna gli rispose: «Io so che viene il Messia, vale a dire il Cristo; quando dunque sarà venuto, ci farà conoscere ogni cosa».
26 Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'	26 E Gesù a lei: «Sono io che ti parlo».
27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'	27 In quel momento arrivarono i discepoli e si meravigliarono che stesse lì a discorrere con una donna; tuttavia nessuno gli domandò: «Che desideri?», oppure: «Perchè parli con lei?».
28 The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,	28 La donna, lasciata l'anfora, se ne andò in città e disse alla gente:
29 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'	29 «Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha raccontato tutto quel che ho fatto; che sia proprio il Cristo?».
30 This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.	30 Uscirono dalla città e vennero da lui.
31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';	31 Intanto i discepoli lo pregavano dicendo: «Rabbi, mangia!».
32 but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'	32 Ma egli rispose loro: «Io ho da mangiare un cibo che voi non conoscete».
33 So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'	33 I discepoli perciò si domandavano l'un l'altro: «Forse qualcuno gli ha portato da mangiare?».
34 But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.	34 E Gesù a loro: «Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di Colui che mi ha mandato e portarne l'opera a termine.
35 Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!	35 Non dite voi: - Ancora quattro mesi e poi la mietitura ?- Ebbene, io vi dico: - Alzate gli occhi e mirate i campi che già biondeggiano per la mèsse.
36 Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.	36 E chi miete riceve già la sua mercede e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, cosicchè tanto il seminatore che il mietitore godono insieme.
37 For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;	37 Perchè in questo si verifica il proverbio: "Altro è il seminatore e altri il mietitore".
38 I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.	38 Io vi ho mandati a mietere là dove non avete lavorato: altri hanno lavorato e voi siete entrati nel campo delle loro fatiche - ».
39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'	39 Molti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui a motivo delle parole della donna, che attestava: «Mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto».
40 So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and	40 Quando dunque i Samaritani vennero da lui, lo pregarono di restare presso di loro, ed egli vi rimase due giorni.
41 many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;	41 E molti di più credettero in lui a cagione di ciò che avevano essi medesimi udito,
42 and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'	42 e dicevano alla donna: «Noi non crediamo più a motivo delle tue parole, ma perchè noi stessi lo abbiamo udito e riconosciamo che egli è veramente il salvatore del mondo».
43 When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.	43 Dopo due giorni partì e andò in Galilea.
44 He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.	44 Perchè Gesù stesso attestò che nessun profeta è onorato nella sua patria.
45 On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.	45 Giunto dunque nella Galilea, fu accolto dai Galilei avendo essi veduto quanto aveva fatto a Gerusalemme durante la festa, alla quale essi pure erano andati.
46 He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;	46 Ritornò adunque in Cana di Galilea, dove aveva cambiata l'acqua in vino. Ora a Cafarnao eravi un ufficiale del re, il cui figlio era ammalato.
47 hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.	47 Avendo sentito che Gesù dalla Giudea era venuto in Galilea, andò a lui e lo pregò che discendesse per guarirgli il figliuolo, il quale stava per morire.
48 Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'	48 Gesù gli disse: «Se voi non vedete dei segni e dei prodigi, non credete».
49 'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'	49 L'ufficiale del re gli rispose: «Signore, discendi, prima che il mio figlio muoia».
50 'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;	50 «Va'», gli disse Gesù «tuo figlio vive». E quell'uomo credette alla parola dettagli da Gesù e partì.
51 and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.	51 Mentre era in cammino fu incontrato dai servi e seppe che il suo figliuolo viveva.
52 He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'	52 Domandò loro quando avesse cominciato a star meglio ed essi gli risposero: «Ieri, alla settima ora la febbre lo lasciò».
53 The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.	53 Il padre riconobbe essere quella appunto l'ora nella quale Gesù gli aveva detto: «Tuo figlio vive», e credette lui e tutta la sua famiglia.
54 This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.	54 Questo nuovo miracolo fu il secondo compiuto da Gesù, tornando dalla Giudea in Galilea.
