1 When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciplesthan John-	1 Le Seigneur sut que les Pharisiens étaient informés à son sujet; on disait qu’il faisait des disciples et baptisait plus que Jean.
2 though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-	2 En fait, ce n’était pas Jésus qui baptisait, mais ses disciples.
3 he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.	3 Il quitta donc la Judée et se mit en route pour la Galilée.
4 He had to pass through Samaria.	4 Il lui fallait traverser la Samarie
5 On the way he came to the Samaritan town cal ed Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph.	5 et c’est ainsi qu’il arriva à une ville de Samarie appelée Sichar, tout près de la terre que Jacob a donnée à son fils Joseph.
6 Jacob's wel was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the wel . It was about the sixth hour.	6 Et c’est là que se trouve le puits de Jacob. Jésus était fatigué de la marche et il s’assit auprès du puits. ’était l’heure de midi.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'	7 Arrive une femme de Samarie pour puiser de l’eau. Jésus lui dit: "Donne-moi à boire.”
8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.	8 À ce moment ses disciples étaient partis à la ville pour acheter de quoi manger.
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, forsomething to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.	9 La Samaritaine lui répondit: "Vous êtes Juif. Comment pouvez-vous demander à boire à une Samaritaine comme moi?” (On sait que les Juifs ne veulent pas de rapports avec les Samaritains.)
10 Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give mesomething to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.	10 Jésus lui dit: "Si tu connaissais le don de Dieu et si tu savais qui te demande à boire, c’est toi qui lui aurais demandé cette eau qui fait vivre, et il te l’aurait donnée.”
11 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?	11 Elle lui dit: "Seigneur, vous n’avez pas de seau et le puits est profond. Où trouvez-vous cette eau vive?
12 Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this wel and drank from it himself with hissons and his cattle?'	12 Notre père Jacob nous a donné ce puits après y avoir bu lui-même avec ses fils et ses troupeaux; êtes-vous plus grand que lui?”
13 Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water wil be thirsty again;	13 Jésus lui dit: "Celui qui boit de cette eau aura encore soif,
14 but no one who drinks the water that I shal give wil ever be thirsty again: the water that I shal give wil become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.	14 mais celui qui boit de l’eau que je lui donnerai ne connaîtra plus jamais la soif. L’eau que je lui donnerai deviendra en lui une source intarissable de vie éternelle.”
15 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again todraw water.'	15 La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, donnez-moi donc de cette eau; je n’aurai plus soif et je n’aurai plus à venir en chercher ici.”
16 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'	16 Jésus répond: "Va, appelle ton mari et reviens.”
17 The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have nohusband";	17 Alors la femme lui dit: "Je n’ai pas de mari.” Jésus lui répond: "Tu dis que tu n’as pas de mari? Comme c’est vrai!
18 for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'	18 Tu as eu cinq maris et celui que tu as maintenant n’est pas ton mari. Tu as dit vrai!”
19 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.	19 Alors la femme lui dit: "Seigneur, je vois que vous êtes un prophète.
20 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one oughtto worship.'	20 Dites-moi: nos pères ont toujours adoré sur cette montagne; pourquoi donc dites-vous que Jérusalem est le Lieu où l’on doit adorer?”
21 Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you wil worship the Father neither on thismountain nor in Jerusalem.	21 Jésus lui dit: "Femme, crois-moi, l’heure vient où vous adorerez le Père. Et alors ce ne sera pas: “sur cette montagne” ou: “à Jérusalem”.
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.	22 Vous adorez sans avoir la connaissance, et nous, nous adorons et nous savons où, parce que le salut vient des Juifs.
23 But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers wil worship the Father inspirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.	23 Mais l’heure vient, et elle est déjà là, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité. Alors ils seront des adorateurs du Père comme lui-même les désire.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.	24 “Dieu est esprit; quand on adore, il faut adorer en esprit et en vérité.”
25 The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he wilexplain everything.'	25 La femme alors lui dit: "Je sais que bientôt sera là le Messie (c’est-à-dire le Christ). Quand il sera là, il nous dira tout.”
26 Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'	26 Jésus répond: "Je le suis, moi qui te parle.”
27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though noneof them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'	27 À ce moment-là revinrent les disciples, et ils s’étonnaient de le voir parler avec une femme. Pourtant aucun d’entre eux n’osa lui demander: "Que cherches-tu?” ou: "Pourquoi lui parles-tu?”
28 The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tel the people,	28 Quant à la femme, elle laissa là sa cruche et s’en alla à la ville en courant. Elle dit aux gens:
29 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'	29 "Venez voir quelqu’un qui m’a dit tout ce que j’ai fait! Et si c’était le Christ?”
30 This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.	30 Voici donc qu’ils sortent de la ville pour aller le trouver.
31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';	31 Pendant ce temps les disciples lui disaient: "Maître, mange!”
32 but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'	32 Il leur répondit: "La nourriture que je dois manger, vous ne la connaissez pas.”
33 So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'	33 Alors ils se dirent les uns aux autres: "Peut-être quelqu’un lui a-t-il apporté à manger?”
34 But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.	34 Mais Jésus leur dit: "Ma nourriture, c’est de faire la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé et de mener à bien son œuvre.
35 Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Wel , I tel you, look around you, look atthe fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!	35 Vous avez dit, n’est-ce pas: Dans quatre mois ce sera la moisson. Alors je vous dis: Ouvrez les yeux et regardez les champs. Déjà ils blanchissent, et ce sera la moisson.
36 Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so thatsower and reaper can rejoice together.	36 Voici le moissonneur qui reçoit son salaire et amasse du grain pour la vie éternelle, et alors le semeur se réjouit avec le moissonneur.
37 For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;	37 “On a raison de dire que l’un sème et l’autre moissonne,
38 I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have comeinto the rewards of their labour.	38 car je vous ai envoyés moissonner là où vous n’aviez pas peiné. D’autres avaient peiné, et vous avez repris leur travail.”
39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'Hetold me everything I have done.'	39 Dans cette ville beaucoup de Samaritains crurent à cause de la femme qui affirmait: "Il m’a dit tout ce que j’avais fait.”
40 So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days,and	40 Quand les Samaritains étaient venus trouver Jésus, ils lui avaient demandé de s’arrêter chez eux, et il y resta deux jours.
41 many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;	41 Il y en eut beaucoup plus qui crurent à cause de sa parole;
42 and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heardhim ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'	42 et ils disaient à la femme: "Maintenant nous croyons, non pas à cause de ce que tu as raconté, mais parce que nous l’avons écouté. Nous savons qu’il est vraiment le Sauveur du monde.”
43 When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.	43 Après ces deux jours, Jésus repartit pour la Galilée.
44 He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.	44 Jésus a affirmé qu’un prophète n’est pas honoré dans son propre pays.
45 On his arrival the Galileans received him wel , having seen al that he had done at Jerusalem duringthe festival which they too had attended.	45 Cependant, quand il se trouva en Galilée, les Galiléens lui firent bon accueil, car eux aussi étaient allés à Jérusalem pour la fête et ils avaient vu tout ce que Jésus avait fait durant cette fête.
46 He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royalofficial whose son was il at Capernaum;	46 C’est alors que Jésus vint de nouveau à Cana de Galilée où il avait changé l’eau en vin. Il y avait à Capharnaüm un fonctionnaire du roi dont le fils était malade.
47 hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure hisson, as he was at the point of death.	47 Quand il apprit que Jésus était retourné de Judée en Galilée, il vint le trouver et lui demanda de descendre pour guérir son fils, car il était près de mourir.
48 Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'	48 Jésus lui dit: "Tant que vous ne voyez pas des signes et des miracles, vous ne croyez pas!”
49 'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'	49 Le fonctionnaire lui dit: "Seigneur, venez avant que mon enfant soit mort.”
50 'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son wil live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his wayhome;	50 Jésus lui dit: "Va, ton fils est bien vivant.” Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui disait et il partit.
51 and while he was stil on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.	51 Il était déjà dans la descente quand il rencontra ses serviteurs qui venaient lui dire que son enfant vivait.
52 He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at theseventh hour.'	52 Aussitôt il leur demanda à quelle heure il s’était trouvé mieux, et ils répondirent: "La fièvre est tombée hier un peu après midi.”
53 The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son wil live'; and he andal his household believed.	53 Le père reconnut alors que c’était l’heure où Jésus lui avait dit: ‘Ton fils est bien vivant.’ Et il devint croyant, lui et toute sa famille.
54 This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.	54 C’est là le deuxième signe miraculeux que Jésus a fait; il venait de rentrer de Judée en Galilée.
