1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.	1 Prima della festa di Pasqua sapendo Gesù che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.
2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.	2 E fatta la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda di Simone Iscariote di tradirlo,
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,	3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani, e come, venuto da Dio, a Dio tornava,
4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;	4 si alzò da tavola, depose la veste, e preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.
5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.	5 Poi versata dell'acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli, e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui era cinto.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'	6 Venne dunque a Simon Pietro. E Pietro gli disse: Signore, tu lavarmi i piedi?
7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'	7 Gli rispose Gesù: Quel che fo' tu ora non lo comprendi; ma lo saprai in avvenire.
8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,	8 E Pietro: Tu non mi laverai i piedi in eterno! Gesù gli rispose: Se non ti laverò non avrai parte con me.
9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'	9 Allora, Signore, esclamò Simon Pietro, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!
10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'	10 E Gesù replicò: Chi è lavato non ha bisogno che di lavarsi i piedi, per essere tutto puro. E voi siete puri, ma non tutti.
11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.	11 Sapeva bene chi l'avrebbe tradito; per questo disse: Non siete tutti puri.
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?	12 Dopo aver dunque lavati loro i piedi, riprese le sue vesti, e rimessosi a mensa, disse loro: Intendete quello che vi ho fatto?
13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.	13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore, e dite bene, perchè lo sono.
14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.	14 Se dunque v'ho lavati i piedi io, Maestro e Signore, dovete anche voi lavarvi i piedi l'un l'altro.
15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.	15 Io infatti vi ho dato l'esempio, affinchè come ho fatto io, facciate anche voi.
16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.	16 In verità, in verità vi dico: Non c'è servo maggiore del suo padrone; nè apostolo da più di chi lo ha mandato.
17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.	17 Sapendo queste cose sarete beati se le metterete in pratica.
18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.	18 Non parlo di voi tutti, so quali ho eletti; ma si deve adempire la Scrittura; uno che mangia il pane con me leverà contrò di me il suo calcagno.
19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.	19 Ve lo dico ora prima che avvenga, affinché, avvenuto che sia, crediate che son io.
20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi accoglie colui elio avrò mandato, accoglie me, o chi accoglie me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato.
21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'	21 Dette queste cose, Gesù si turbò nello spirito, e parlando apertamente, disse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che uno di voi mi tradirà.
22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.	22 Cominciarono perciò i discepoli a guardarsi l'un l'altro, non sapendo a chi alludesse.
23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;	23 Stava uno dei discepoli, quello da Gesù prediletto, posando sul seno di lui.
24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'	24 A questo fe' cenno Simon Pietro, e chiese: Di chi parla?
25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'	25 E quello, posato com'era sul petto di Gesù, chiese a lui: Signore, chi è mai?
26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.	26 Gesù gli rispose: E' quello a cui darò un pezzetto di pane intinto. E intinto un pezzetto di pane lo diede a Giuda di Simone Iscariote.
27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'	27 E dopo quel boccone Satana entrò in lui. E Gesù gli disse: Quello che fai fallo presto.
28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.	28 Ma nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè egli avesse così parlato.
29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.	29 Difatti alcuni pensavano, che tenendo Giuda la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: Compra quanto ci occorre per la festa, o che desse qualche cosa ai poveri.
30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.	30 Ma Giuda, preso il boccone, partì subito. Ed era notte.
31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.	31 Uscito che fu Giuda, Gesù disse: Ora è stato glorificato il Figlio dell'uomo: e Dio è stato glorificato in lui:
32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.	32 e se Dio è stato in lui glorificato, lo glorificherà in se stesso e presto.
33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.	33 Figliolini, son con voi ancora per poco. Mi cercherete, ma, come dissi ai Giudei: dove sono io non potete venire voi, or lo dico anche a voi.
34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.	34 Vi dò un comandamento nuovo, d'amarvi scambievolmente: amatevi l'un l'altro come io vi ho amati.
35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.	35 Da questo conosceran tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avrete mutuo amore.
36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'	36 Gli disse altera Simon Pietro: Signore, dove vai? Gesù gli rispose: Dove vo io non puoi seguirmi per ora, ma più tardi mi seguirai.
37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'	37 Replicò Pietro: E perchè non posso ora, Signore, seguirti? Darò per te la vita.
38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'	38 Gesù gli disse: Tu darai la vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: non canterà il gallo, che tu mi avrai rinnegato per tre volte.
