John 13

1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.	1 וְלִפְנֵי חַג הַפֶּסַח כְּשֶׁיָּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ כִּי בָאָה שְׁעָתוֹ לַעֲבֹר מִן־הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה אֶל־אָבִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אָהֵב אֶת בְּחִירָיו אֲשֶׁר בָּעוֹלָם כֵּן אֲהֵבָם עַד־הַקֵּץ
2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.	2 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הָחֵל הַסְּעוּדָה וְהַשָּׂטָן נָתַן בְּלֵב יְהוּדָה בֶן־שִׁמְעוֹן אִישׁ קְרִיּוֹת לְמָסְרוֹ
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,	3 וַיֵּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ כִּי נָתַן אָבִיו אֶת־הַכֹּל בְּיָדוֹ וְכִי מֵאֱלֹהִים בָּא וְאֶל־אֱלֹהִים יָשׁוּב
4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;	4 וַיָּקָם מֵעַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן וַיִּפְשֹׁט אֶת־בְּגָדָיו וַיִּקַּח מִטְפַּחַת וַיַּחְגְּרֶהָ
5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.	5 וְאַחַר יָצַק מַיִם בַּכִּיּוֹר וַיָּחֶל לִרְחֹץ אֶת־רַגְלֵי תַלְמִידָיו וּלְנַגֵּב בַּמִּטְפַּחַת אֲשֶׁר־הוּא חָגוּר בָּהּ
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'	6 וַיִּקְרַב אֶל־שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס וְהוּא אָמַר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי הַאַתָּה תִּרְחַץ אֶת־רַגְלָי
7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'	7 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֵת אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה אֵינְךָ יֹדֵעַ כָּעֵת וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן תֵּדָע
8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,	8 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו פֶּטְרוֹס לְעוֹלָם לֹא־תִרְחַץ אֶת־רַגְלָי וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ אִם־לֹא אֶרְחַץ אֹתְךָ אֵין לְךָ חֵלֶק עִמִּי
9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'	9 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי לֹא לְבַד אֶת־רַגְלַי כִּי אִם־גַּם אֶת־יָדַי וְאֶת־רֹאשִׁי
10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'	10 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ הַמְרֻחָץ אֵין־לוֹ לִרְחֹץ עוֹד כִּי אִם־אֶת־הָרַגְלַיִם כִּי כֻלּוֹ טָהוֹר הוּא וְאַתֶּם טְהוֹרִים אַךְ לֹא כֻלְּכֶם
11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.	11 כִּי יָדַע מִי יִמְסְרֵהוּ עַל־כֵּן אָמַר לֹא כֻלְּכֶם טְהוֹרִים
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?	12 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־רָחַץ אֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶם וַיִּלְבַּשׁ אֶת־בְּגָדָיו וַיָּשָׁב לְהָסֵב וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הַיְדַעְתֶּם מָה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לָכֶם
13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.	13 אַתֶּם קֹרְאִים־לִי רַב וְאָדוֹן וְהֵיטַבְתֶּם אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתֶּם כִּי־אֲנִי הוּא
14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.	14 לָכֵן אִם־אֲנִי הַמּוֹרֶה וְהָאָדוֹן רָחַצְתִּי אֶת־רַגְלֵיכֶם גַּם־אַתֶּם חַיָּבִים לִרְחֹץ אִישׁ אֶת־רַגְלֵי אָחִיו
15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.	15 כִּי מוֹפֵת נָתַתִּי לָכֶם לְמַעַן תַּעֲשֹוּ גַם־אַתֶּם כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לָכֶם
16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.	16 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי הָעֶבֶד אֵינֶנּוּ גָדוֹל מֵאֲדֹנָיו וְהַשָּׁלוּחַ אֵינֶנּוּ גָדוֹל מִשֹּׁלְחוֹ
17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.	17 אִם־יְדַעְתֶּם זֹאת אַשְׁרֵיכֶם אִם־כֵּן תַּעֲשֹוּ
18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.	18 לֹא עַל־כֻּלְּכֶם דִּבַּרְתִּי יוֹדֵעַ אֲנִי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר בָּחַרְתִּי בָהֶם אַךְ לְמַעַן יִמָּלֵא הַכָּתוּב אוֹכֵל לַחְמִי הִגְדִּיל עָלַי עָקֵב
19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.	19 מֵעַתָּה אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם בְּטֶרֶם הֱיוֹתָהּ לְמַעַן בְּבוֹאָהּ תַּאֲמִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא
20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'	20 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי כָל־הַמְקַבֵּל אֵת אֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁלָחֵהוּ אֹתִי הוּא מְקַבֵּל וְהַמְקַבֵּל אֹתִי הוּא מְקַבֵּל אֶת־שֹׁלְחִי
21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'	21 וַיְהִי כְּכַלּוֹת יֵשׁוּעַ לְדַבֵּר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיִּסָעֵר בְּרוּחוֹ וַיָּעַד וַיֹּאמֶר אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי אֶחָד מִכֶּם יִמְסְרֵנִי
22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.	22 וַיַּבִּיטוּ תַלְמִידָיו אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ וַיִּתְמְהוּ לָדַעַת עַל־מִי דִבֵּר
23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;	23 וְאֶחָד מִתַּלְמִידָיו מֵסֵב עַל־חֵיק יֵשׁוּעַ אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁוּעַ אֲהֵבוֹ
24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'	24 וַיִּרְמָז־לוֹ שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס לִדְרשׁ מִי־הוּא זֶה אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר עָלָיו
25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'	25 וַיִּפֹּל עַל־לֵב יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי מִי הוּא
26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.	26 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ הִנֵּה זֶה הוּא אֲשֶׁר־אֶטְבֹּל פִּתִּי לְתִתּוֹ לוֹ וַיִּטְבֹּל אֶת־פִּתּוֹ וַיִּתֵּן אֶל־יְהוּדָה בֶן־שִׁמְעוֹן אִישׁ קְרִיּוֹת
27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'	27 וְאַחֲרֵי בִלְעוֹ בָּא הַשָּׂטָן אֶל־קִרְבּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־תַּעֲשֶׂה עֲשֵׂה מְהֵרָה
28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.	28 וּמִן־הַמְסֻבִּים לֹא־יָדַע אִישׁ עַל־מֶה דִבֶּר אֵלָיו כָּזֹאת
29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.	29 כִּי יֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר חָשְׁבוּ כִּי־אָמַר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ קְנֵה־לָנוּ צָרְכֵי הֶחָג אוֹ לָתֵת לָאֶבְיוֹנִים יַעַן אֲשֶׁר כִּיס הַכֶּסֶף תַּחַת יַד יְהוּדָה
30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.	30 וְהוּא בְּקַחְתּוֹ אֶת־פַּת הַלֶּחֶם מִהֵר לָצֵאת הַחוּצָה וַיְהִי לָיְלָה
31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.	31 הוּא יָצָא וְיֵשׁוּעַ אָמַר עַתָּה נִתְפָּאַר בֶּן־הָאָדָם וְהָאֱלֹהִים נִתְפָּאַר בּוֹ
32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.	32 אִם הָאֱלֹהִים נִתְפָּאַר בּוֹ גַּם־הָאֱלֹהִים הוּא יְפָאֲרֵהוּ בְּעַצְמוֹ וּבִמְהֵרָה יְפָאֲרֵהוּ
33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.	33 בָּנַי עוֹד־מְעַט מִזְעָר אֶהְיֶה עִמָּכֶם אַתֶּם תְּבַקְשׁוּנִי וְכַאֲשֶׁר אָמַרְתִּי אֶל־הַיְּהוּדִים כִּי אֶל־אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ לֹא תוּכְלוּ לָבוֹא שָׁמָּה כֵּן אֲלֵיכֶם אֹמֵר אֲנִי עָתָּה
34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.	34 מִצְוָה חֲדָשָׁה אֲנִי נֹתֵן לָכֶם כִּי תְאֵהֲבוּ אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אָהַבְתִּי אֶתְכֶם כֵּן גַּם־אַתֶּם אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו תֶּאֱהָבוּן
35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.	35 בָּזֹאת יֵדְעוּ כֻלָּם כִּי תַלְמִידַי אַתֶּם בִּהְיוֹת אַהֲבָה בֵּינֵיכֶם
36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'	36 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי אָנָה תֵּלֵךְ וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ שָׁמָּה לֹא־תוּכַל עַתָּה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרָי אַךְ אַחֲרֵי־כֵן תֵלֵךְ אַחֲרָי
37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'	37 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי מַדּוּעַ לֹא־אוּכַל עַתָּה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרֶיךָ הֵן־נַפְשִׁי בְּעַד־נַפְשְׁךָ אֶתֵּן
38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'	38 וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ הֲכִי־תִתֵּן נַפְשְׁךָ בְּעַד נַפְשִׁי אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָךְ בְּטֶרֶם יִקְרָא הַתַּרְנְגֹל תְּכַחֵשׁ בִּי שָׁלשׁ פְּעָמִים
