John 13

1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.	1 - Prima della festa di Pasqua, Gesù, sapendo giunta l'ora sua di passare da questo mondo al Padre, poichè egli aveva amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.
2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.	2 Terminata la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda, figliuol di Simone Iscariote, di tradirlo,
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,	3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio ritornava,
4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;	4 si levò da tavola, depose la veste e, preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.
5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.	5 Poi, versata acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli ed a rasciugarli col panno che si era messo intorno.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'	6 Venne dunque da Simon Pietro; ma Pietro gli disse: «Tu, Signore, lavi i piedi a me?».
7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'	7 Gesù rispose: «Ciò che io faccio, non lo comprendi ora; lo comprenderai più tardi».
8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,	8 Pietro gli disse: «I piedi tu non me li laverai in eterno!». E Gesù: «Se io non ti lavo, tu non avrai parte con me».
9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'	9 Rispose Simon Pietro: «Signore, non solo i miei piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo».
10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'	10 Gesù soggiunse: «Chi è lavato, ha bisogno di lavarsi soltanto i piedi; egli è già mondo. Anche voi siete mondi, ma non tutti».
11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.	11 Perchè egli sapeva chi sarebbe stato a tradirlo, perciò disse: «Non siete tutti mondi».
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?	12 Dopo lavati loro i piedi e riprese le sue vesti, si rimise a tavola e disse loro: «Sapete cosa vi ho fatto?
13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.	13 Voi chiamate me Maestro e Signore, e fate bene, perchè lo sono.
14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.	14 Se dunque io, Signore e Maestro, ho lavato i piedi a voi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni gli altri.
15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.	15 Vi ho dato l'esempio affinchè anche voi facciate come io ho fatto a voi.
16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.	16 In verità, in verità vi dico che il servo non è da più del padrone, nè l'apostolo da più di colui che l'ha mandato.
17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.	17 Se voi sapete queste cose, sarete beati se le metterete in pratica!
18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.	18 Io non parlo di ciascuno di voi; io conosco quelli che ho scelto: ma bisogna che si compia la Scrittura: "Chi mangia il pane con me, ha levato il suo calcagno contro di me".
19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.	19 Ve lo dico adesso prima che avvenga, affinchè avvenuto che sia, crediate che sono io.
20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'	20 In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi riceve colui che io manderò, riceve me stesso, e chi riceve me, riceve Colui che mi ha mandato».
21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'	21 Detto ciò, Gesù fu turbato nello spirito, protestò e disse: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Uno di voi mi tradirà».
22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.	22 I discepoli si guardavano tra loro, incerti di chi parlasse.
23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;	23 Uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesù prediligeva, se ne stava appoggiato al petto di Gesù,
24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'	24 e Simon Pietro gli fece cenno e gli disse: «Di chi parla?».
25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'	25 Posato come era pertanto sul seno di Gesù, gli domandò: «Signore, chi è mai?».
26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.	26 Gli rispose Gesù: «È colui al quale io porgerò del pane inzuppato». E inzuppato del pane lo diede a Giuda, figliuolo di Simone Iscariote.
27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'	27 E dopo quel boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Gli disse pertanto Gesù: «Ciò che fai, fallo presto».
28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.	28 Nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè glielo avesse detto;
29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.	29 alcuni infatti pensavano che, siccome Giuda aveva la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: «Compera quanto ci è necessario per la festa», oppure: che desse qualcosa ai poveri.
30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.	30 Quello però, preso il boccone, uscì subito. Era notte.
31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.	31 Uscito che fu, Gesù disse: «Ora il Figliuol dell'uomo è stato glorificato, e Dio è stato glorificato in lui.
32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.	32 Se Dio fu glorificato in lui, anche Dio lo glorificherà in se stesso e lo glorificherà tosto.
33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.	33 Figliuoli, ancora per poco sono con voi. Voi mi cercherete, ma, come ho detto ai Giudei, dove io vado, voi non potete venire; lo dico adesso anche a voi.
34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.	34 Io vi dò il comandamento nuovo: Amatevi gli uni con gli altri. Come io ho amato voi, così voi amatevi a vicenda.
35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.	35 Da questo tutti conosceranno che siete miei discepoli, se vi amerete scambievolmente».
36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'	36 Simon Pietro gli domandò: «Signore, dove vai?». Gesù gli rispose: «Dove io vado, non puoi per ora seguirmi; mi seguirai più tardi».
37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'	37 Pietro gli disse: «Signore, perchè non posso seguirti ora? Io darò la mia vita per te!».
38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'	38 Gesù gli replicò: «Tu dai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: - Non canterà il gallo prima che tu non m'abbia rinnegato tre volte. -
