NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.1 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.2 The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,
Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me."
'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'9 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well."
Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'10 Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.11 For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?12 So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?
You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.13 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.14 If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.
I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.
'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.16 Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.17 If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.18 I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.'
I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.19 From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."
Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'21 When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.22 The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side.
Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'25 He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, "Master, who is it?"
Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it." So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.
At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'27 After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."
None of the others at table understood why he said this.28 (Now) none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or to give something to the poor.
As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.30 So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.
When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.31 When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.32 (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come.33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, 'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you.
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'36 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered (him), "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later."
Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'37 Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."
