NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.1 Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.2 And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,)
Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,3 Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God;
and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;4 He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself.
he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.5 After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'6 He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'7 Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,8 Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.
'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'9 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'10 Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.
He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.11 For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?12 Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?
You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.13 You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.
If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.14 If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.15 For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.16 Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.
'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.17 If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.
I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.
I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.19 At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.
In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'20 Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.
Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.22 The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?
so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'25 He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?
Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.26 Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
None of the others at table understood why he said this.28 Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.29 For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.30 He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.31 When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.32 If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.
Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come.33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.34 A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.
Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'36 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.
Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'37 Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'38 Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.
