Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.1 Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.2 And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,
Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,3 knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,
and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;4 he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.
he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.5 Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'6 And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”
Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'7 Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”
'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”
'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'9 Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”
Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'10 Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”
He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.11 For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?12 And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?
You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.
If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.14 Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.
I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.15 For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.
'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.16 Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.
'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.17 If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.
I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.18 I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’
I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.19 And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.
In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”
Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”
The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.22 Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.
The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;23 And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.
Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'24 Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”
so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'25 And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.26 Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
None of the others at table understood why he said this.28 Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.
Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.29 For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.
As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.30 Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.
When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.31 Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.32 If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.
Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come.33 Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.34 I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.
It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.35 By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”
Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”
Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'37 Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”
'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'38 Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”
