John 13

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.	1 Ante diem autem festum Pa schae, sciens Iesus quia venit eius hora, uttranseat ex hoc mundo ad Patrem, cum dilexisset suos, qui erant in mundo, infinem dilexit eos.
2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.	2 Et in cena, cum Diabolus iam misisset in corde, ut tradereteum Iudas Simonis Iscariotis,
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,	3 sciens quia omnia dedit ei Pater in manus, etquia a Deo exivit et ad Deum vadit,
4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;	4 surgit a cena et ponit vestimenta sua et,cum accepisset linteum, praecinxit se.
5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.	5 Deinde mittit aquam in pelvem et coepitlavare pedes discipulorum et extergere linteo, quo erat praecinctus.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'	6 Venitergo ad Simonem Petrum. Dicit ei: “ Domine, tu mihi lavas pedes? ”.
7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'	7 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “ Quod ego facio, tu nescis modo, scies autempostea ”.
8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,	8 Dicit ei Petrus: “ Non lavabis mihi pedes in aeternum! ”.Respondit Iesus ei: “ Si non lavero te, non habes partem mecum ”.
9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'	9 Dicit eiSimon Petrus: “ Domine, non tantum pedes meos sed et manus et caput! ”.
10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'	10 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Qui lotus est, non indiget nisi ut pedes lavet, sed estmundus totus; et vos mundi estis sed non omnes ”.
11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.	11 Sciebat enim quisnamesset, qui traderet eum; propterea dixit: “ Non estis mundi omnes ”.
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?	12 Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum et accepit vestimenta sua, cum recubuissetiterum, dixit eis: “ Scitis quid fecerim vobis?
13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.	13 Vos vocatis me: “Magister”et: “Domine”, et bene dicitis; sum etenim.
14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.	14 Si ergo ego lavi vestrospedes, Dominus et Magister, et vos debetis alter alterius lavare pedes.
15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.	15 Exemplum enim dedi vobis, ut, quemadmodum ego feci vobis, et vos faciatis.
16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.	16 Amen, amen dico vobis: Non est servus maior domino suo, neque apostolus maioreo, qui misit illum.
17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.	17 Si haec scitis, beati estis, si facitis ea.
18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.	18 Non deomnibus vobis dico, ego scio, quos elegerim, sed ut impleatur Scriptura: “Quimanducat meum panem, levavit contra me calcaneum suum”.
19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.	19 Amodo dico vobispriusquam fiat, ut credatis, cum factum fuerit, quia ego sum.
20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'	20 Amen, amen dicovobis: Qui accipit, si quem misero, me accipit; qui autem me accipit, accipiteum, qui me misit ”.
21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'	21 Cum haec dixisset Iesus, turbatus est spiritu et protestatus est et dixit:“ Amen, amen dico vobis: Unus ex vobis tradet me ”.
22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.	22 Aspiciebant adinvicem discipuli, haesitantes de quo diceret.
23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;	23 Erat recumbens unus exdiscipulis eius in sinu Iesu, quem diligebat Iesus.
24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'	24 Innuit ergo huic SimonPetrus, ut interrogaret: “ Quis est, de quo dicit? ”.
25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'	25 Cum ergo recumberetille ita supra pectus Iesu, dicit ei: “ Domine, quis est? ”.
26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.	26 RespondetIesus: “ Ille est, cui ego intinctam buccellam porrexero ”. Cum ergointinxisset buccellam, dat Iudae Simonis Iscariotis.
27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'	27 Et post buccellam tuncintroivit in illum Satanas. Dicit ergo ei Iesus: “ Quod facis, fac citius ”.
28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.	28 Hoc autem nemo scivit discumbentium ad quid dixerit ei;
29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.	29 quidam enimputabant quia loculos habebat Iudas, quia dicit ei Iesus: “ Eme ea, quae opussunt nobis ad diem festum ”, aut egenis ut aliquid daret.
30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.	30 Cum ergoaccepisset ille buccellam, exivit continuo; erat autem nox.
31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.	31 Cum ergo exisset, dicit Iesus: “ Nunc clarificatus est Filius hominis, etDeus clarificatus est in eo;
32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.	32 si Deus clarificatus est in eo, et Deusclarificabit eum in semetipso et continuo clarificabit eum.
33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.	33 Filioli, adhucmodicum vobiscum sum; quaeretis me, et sicut dixi Iudaeis: Quo ego vado, vos nonpotestis venire, et vobis dico modo.
34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.	34 Mandatum novum do vobis, ut diligatisinvicem; sicut dilexi vos, ut et vos diligatis invicem.
35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.	35 In hoc cognoscentomnes quia mei discipuli estis: si dilectionem habueritis ad invicem ”.
36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'	36 Dicit ei Simon Petrus: “ Domine, quo vadis? ”. Respondit Iesus: “ Quovado, non potes me modo sequi, sequeris autem postea ”.
37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'	37 Dicit ei Petrus:“ Domine, quare non possum te sequi modo? Animam meam pro te ponam ”.
38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'	38 Respondet Iesus: “ Animam tuam pro me pones? Amen, amen dico tibi: Noncantabit gallus, donec me ter neges.
