1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 וַיְהִי אִישׁ חוֹלֶה לַעְזָר שְׁמוֹ מִבֵּית־הִינִי כְּפַר מִרְיָם וּמָרְתָא אֲחוֹתָהּ
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 הִיא מִרְיָם אֲשֶׁר מָשְׁחָה אֶת־הָאָדוֹן בְּשֶׁמֶן הַמֹּר וַתְּנַגֵּב אֶת־רַגְלָיו בְּשַׂעֲרוֹתֶיהָ וְעַתָּה לַעְזָר אָחִיהָ חָלָה
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 וַתִּשְׁלַחְנָה אַחְיוֹתָיו אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר אֲדֹנִי הִנֵּה זֶה אֲשֶׁר אָהַבְתָּ חֹלֶה הוּא
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 וַיִּשְׁמַע יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמַר זֹאת הַמַּחֲלָה אֵינֶנָּה לַמָּוֶת כִּי אִם־לִכְבוֹד הָאֱלֹהִים לְמַעַן יִכָּבֶד־בָּהּ בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 וְיֵשׁוּעַ אָהֵב אֶת מָרְתָא וְאֶת־אֲחוֹתָהּ וְאֶת־לַעְזָר
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 וַיְהִי כְשָׁמְעוֹ כִּי חָלָה וַיִּתְמַהְמַהּ וַיֵּשֶׁב יוֹמַיִם בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר־הוּא שָׁם
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן אָמַר לְתַלְמִידָיו לְכוּ וְנָשׁוּבָה לְאֶרֶץ יְהוּדָה
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו תַּלְמִידָיו רַבִּי עַתָּה זֶה בִּקְשׁוּ הַיְּהוּדִים לִסְקָלְךָ וְאַתָּה תָּשׁוּב שָׁמָּה
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ הֲלֹא שְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁעוֹת לַיּוֹם אִישׁ כִּי־יֵלֵךְ בַּיּוֹם לֹא יִכָּשֵׁל כִּי יִרְאֶה אוֹר הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 אֲבָל הַהֹלֵךְ בַּלַּיְלָה יִכָּשֵׁל כִּי הָאוֹר אֵין בּוֹ
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 כָּזֹאת דִּבֵּר וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן אָמַר אֲלֵיהֶם לַעְזָר יְדִידֵנוּ יָשֵׁן הוּא וְאָנֹכִי הֹלֵךְ לְמַעַן אֲעִירֶנּוּ
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 וַיֹּאמְרוּ תַּלְמִידָיו אֲדֹנִי אִם־יָשֵׁן הוּא יִוָּשֵׁעַ
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 וְיֵשׁוּעַ דִּבֶּר עַל־מוֹתוֹ וְהֵמָּה חָשְׁבוּ כִּי עַל־מְנוּחַת הַשֵּׁנָה דִּבֵּר
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 אָז גָּלָה יֵשׁוּעַ אֶת־אָזְנָם וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לַעְזָר מֵת
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 וְשָׂמֵחַ אֲנִי בִּגְלַלְכֶם כִּי לֹא־הָיִיתִי שָׁם לְמַעַן תַּאֲמִינוּ וְעַתָּה נִסְעָה וְנֵלְכָה אֵלָיו
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 וַיֹּאמֶר תּוֹמָא הַנִּקְרָא דִידוּמוֹס אֶל־הַתַּלְמִידִים חֲבֵרָיו נֵלְכָה גַם־אֲנַחְנוּ לְמַעַן נָמוּת עִמּוֹ
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 וַיָּבֹא יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִּמְצָאֵהוּ זֶה אַרְבָּעָה יָמִים שֹׁכֵב בַּקָּבֶר
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 וּבֵית־הִינִי הָיָה קָרוֹב לִירוּשָׁלָיִם כְּדֶרֶךְ חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה רִיס
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 וְרַבִּים מִן־הַיְּהוּדִים בָּאוּ בֵית־מָרְתָא וּמִרְיָם לְנַחֵם אֶתְהֶן עַל־אֲחִיהֶן
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ מָרְתָא כִּי יֵשׁוּעַ בָּא וַתֵּצֵא לִקְרָאתוֹ וּמִרְיָם יוֹשֶׁבֶת בַּבָּיִת
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 וַתֹּאמֶר מָרְתָא אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ אֲדֹנִי אִלּוּ הָיִיתָ פֹּה כִּי־אָז לֹא־מֵת אָחִי
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 וְגַם־עַתָּה יָדַעְתִּי כִּי כָל־אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁאַל מֵאֵת אֱלֹהִים יִתֵּן לְךָ אֱלֹהִים
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ יֵשׁוּעַ קוֹם יָקוּם אָחִיךְ
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מָרְתָא יָדַעְתִּי כִּי יָקוּם בַּתְּקוּמָה בַּיּוֹם הָאַחֲרוֹן
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ יֵשׁוּעַ אָנֹכִי הַתְּקוּמָה וְהַחַיִּים הַמַּאֲמִין בִּי יִחְיֶה גַּם כִּי־יָמוּת
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 וְכָל־הַחַי אֲשֶׁר יַאֲמִין־בִּי לֹא־יָמוּת לְעוֹלָם הֲתַאֲמִינִי זֹאת
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו כֵּן אֲדֹנִי הֶאֱמַנְתִּי כִּי־אַתָּה הַמָּשִׁיחַ בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים הַבָּא לָעוֹלָם
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 וַיְהִי אַחַר דַּבְּרָהּ זֹאת וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתִּקְרָא לְמִרְיָם אֲחוֹתָהּ בַּסֵּתֶר לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה הַמּוֹרֶה פֹּה וְקֹרֵא לָךְ
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 הִיא שָׁמְעָה וַתְּמַהֵר לָקוּם וַתָּבֹא אֵלָיו
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 וְיֵשׁוּעַ טֶרֶם יָבֹא אֶל־הַכְּפָר כִּי־עוֹדֶנּוּ עֹמֵד בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר פְּגָשַׁתּוּ־שָׁם מָרְתָא
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 וְהַיְּהוּדִים אֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּ אֶל־בֵּיתָהּ לְנַחֲמָהּ כִּרְאוֹתָם אֶת־מִרְיָם כִּי־קָמָה פִתְאֹם וַתֵּצֵא הָלְכוּ אַחֲרֶיהָ בְּאָמְרָם כִּי־הָלְכָה לָּהּ אֶל־הַקֶּבֶר לִבְכּוֹת שָׁמָּה
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 וַתָּבֹא מִרְיָם אֶל־הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁוּעַ עֹמֵד שָׁם וַתֵּרֶא אֹתוֹ וַתִּפֹּל לְרַגְלָיו וַתֹּאמֶר לוֹ אֲדֹנִי אִלּוּ הָיִיתָ פֹּה כִּי־אָז לֹא־מֵת אָחִי
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 וַיְהִי כִּרְאוֹת יֵשׁוּעַ אֹתָהּ בֹּכִיָּה וְגַם־הַיְּהוּדִים אֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּ אִתָּהּ בֹּכִים וַתִּזְעֹם רוּחוֹ וַיְהִי מַרְעִיד
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵיפֹה שַׂמְתֶּם אֹתוֹ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי בֹּא וּרְאֵה
35 Jesus wept;	35 וַיֵּבְךְּ יֵשׁוּעַ
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 וַיֹּאמְרוּ הַיְּהוּדִים הִנֵּה מַה־גָּדְלָה אַהֲבָתוֹ אֹתוֹ
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 וּמִקְצָתָם אָמְרוּ הַפֹּקֵחַ עֵינֵי הָעִוֵּר הֲלֹא יָכֹל לַעֲשֹוֹת שֶׁגַּם־זֶה לֹא יָמוּת
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 וַיּוֹסֶף עוֹד יֵשׁוּעַ לְהִזָּעֵם בְּרוּחוֹ וַיָּבֹא אֶל־הַקֶּבֶר וְהוּא מְעָרָה וְאֶבֶן עַל־מְבוֹאָהּ
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ שְׂאוּ אֶת־הָאֶבֶן מֵעָלֶיהָ וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מָרְתָא אֲחוֹת הַמֵּת אֲדֹנִי הִנֵּה כְּבָר בָּאָשׁ כִּי־אַרְבָּעָה יָמִים לוֹ
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ יֵשׁוּעַ הֲלֹא אָמַרְתִּי לָךְ כִּי אִם־תַּאֲמִינִי תֶּחֱזִי אֶת־כְּבוֹד הָאֱלֹהִים
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת־הָאֶבֶן אֲשֶׁר הַמֵּת הוּשַׂם שָׁם וְיֵשׁוּעַ נָשָׂא אֶת־עֵינָיו לַמָּרוֹם וַיֹּאמַר אוֹדְךָ אָבִי כִּי עֲנִיתָנִי
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 וַאֲנִי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי בְכָל־עֵת תַּעֲנֵנִי אוּלָם בַּעֲבוּר הָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבוֹתַי דִּבַּרְתִּי לְמַעַן יַאֲמִינוּ בִי כִּי אַתָּה שְׁלַחְתָּנִי
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 וַיְהִי כְּכַלּוֹתוֹ לְדַבֵּר וַיִּקְרָא בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל לַעְזָר קוּם צֵא
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 וַיֵּצֵא הַמֵּת וְיָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו כְּרוּכֹת בְּתַכְרִיכִין וּפָנָיו לוּטִים בְּמִטְפָּחַת וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ הַתִּירוּ אֹתוֹ וְיֵלֵךְ לְדַרְכּוֹ
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 וְרַבִּים מִן־הַיְּהוּדִים אֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ אֶל־מִרְיָם בִּרְאוֹתָם אֶת־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יֵשׁוּעַ הֶאֱמִינוּ בוֹ
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 וּמִקְצָתָם הָלְכוּ אֶל־הַפְּרוּשִׁים וַיַּגִּידוּ לָהֶם אֶת־אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יֵשׁוּעַ
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 אָז יַקְהִילוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים הַגְּדוֹלִים וְהַפְּרוּשִׁים אֶת־הַסַּנְהֶדְרִין וַיֹּאמְרוּ מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂה כִּי הָאִישׁ הַלָּזֶה עֹשֶׂה אֹתוֹת הַרְבֵּה
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 אִם־נַנִּיחַ לוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת כֻּלָּם יַאֲמִינוּ בוֹ וּבָאוּ הָרוֹמִיִּים וְלָקְחוּ גַּם אֶת־אַדְמָתֵנוּ וְגַם אֶת־עַמֵּנוּ
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 וְאֶחָד מֵהֶם קַיָּפָא שְׁמוֹ וְהוּא כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל בַּשָּׁנָה הַהִיא אָמַר אֲלֵיהֶם הֵן לֹא־תֵדְעוּ מְאוּמָה
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 אַף לֹא־תָבִינוּ כִּי טוֹב לָנוּ מוּת אִישׁ אֶחָד בְּעַד הַגּוֹי מֵאֲבֹד הָעָם כֻּלּוֹ
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 וְזֹאת לֹא־דִבֶּר מִלִּבּוֹ כִּי אִם־בִּהְיוֹתוֹ כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל בַּשָּׁנָה הַהִיא נִבָּא כִּי־יֵשׁוּעַ יָמוּת בְּעַד הָעָם
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 וְלֹא־בְעַד הָעָם לְבַד כִּי אִם־לְקַבֵּץ גַּם־אֶת־בְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים הַמְפֻזָּרִים וְהָיוּ לְאֶחָד
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 וַיִּוָּעֲצוּ יַחְדָּו לַהֲמִיתוֹ מֵהַיּוֹם הַהוּא וָהָלְאָה
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 עַל־כֵּן לֹא־הִתְהַלֵּךְ יֵשׁוּעַ עוֹד בְּתוֹךְ הַיְּהוּדִים בַּגָּלוּי כִּי אִם־סָר מִשָּׁם לָאָרֶץ הַקְּרוֹבָה אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּר אֶל־עִיר אֶפְרַיִם וַיָּגָר־שָׁם עִם־תַּלְמִידָיו
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 וַיִּקְרְבוּ יְמֵי הַפֶּסַח לַיְּהוּדִים וְעַם־רַב עָלוּ מִן־הָאָרֶץ יְרוּשָׁלַיְמָה לִפְנֵי הַפֶּסַח לְמַעַן יִטֶּהָרוּ
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 וַיְבַקְשׁוּ אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַ וּבְעָמְדָם בְּבֵית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ נִדְבְּרוּ לֵאמֹר מַה־תַּחְשְׁבוּ הֲכִי לֹא־יָבוֹא אֶל־הֶחָג
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 וְהַכֹּהֲנִים הַגְּדוֹלִים וְהַפְּרוּשִׁים גָּזְרוּ גְזֵרָה אֲשֶׁר אִם־יֵדַע אִישׁ אֶת־מְקוֹמוֹ יוֹדִיעֶנּוּ לְמַעַן יִתְפְּשֻׂהוּ
