John 11

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 Había un hombre enfermo, Lázaro de Betania, del pueblo de María y de su hermana Marta.
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 María era la misma que derramó perfume sobre el Señor y le secó los pies con sus cabellos. Su hermano Lázaro era el que estaba enfermo.
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 Las hermanas enviaron a decir a Jesús: «Señor, el que tú amas, está enfermo».
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 Al oír esto, Jesús dijo: «Esta enfermedad no es mortal; es para gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella».
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 Jesús quería mucho a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 Sin embargo, cuando oyó que este se encontraba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 Después dijo a sus discípulos: «Volvamos a Judea».
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 Los discípulos le dijeron: «Maestro, hace poco los judíos querían apedrearte, ¿quieres volver allá?».
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 Jesús les respondió: «¿Acaso no son doce la horas del día? El que camina de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 en cambio, el que camina de noche tropieza, porque la luz no está en él».
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 Después agregó: «Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero yo voy a despertarlo».
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 Sus discípulos le dijeron: «Señor, si duerme, se curará».
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 Ellos pensaban que hablaba del sueño, pero Jesús se refería a la muerte.
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 Entonces les dijo abiertamente: «Lázaro ha muerto,
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 y me alegro por ustedes de no haber estado allí, a fin de que crean. Vayamos a verlo».
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 Tomás, llamado el Mellizo, dijo a los otros discípulos: «Vayamos también nosotros a morir con él».
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 Cuando Jesús llegó, se encontró con que Lázaro estaba sepultado desde hacía cuatro Días.
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 Betania distaba de Jerusalén sólo unos tres kilómetros.
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 Muchos judíos habían ido a consolar a Marta y a María, por la muerte de su hermano.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 Al enterarse de que Jesús llegaba, Marta salió a su encuentro, mientras María permanecía en la casa.
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 Marta dio a Jesús: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 Pero yo sé que aun ahora, Dios te concederá todo lo que le pidas».
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 Jesús le dijo: «Tu hermano resucitará».
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 Marta le respondió: «Sé que resucitará en la resurrección del último día».
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 Jesús le dijo: «Yo soy la Resurrección y la Vida. El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá:
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 y todo el que vive y cree en mí, no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?».
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 Ella le respondió: «Sí, Señor, creo que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, el que debía venir al mundo».
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 Después fue a llamar a María, su hermana, y le dijo en voz baja: «El Maestro está aquí y te llama».
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 Al oír esto, ella se levantó rápidamente y fue a su encuentro.
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 Jesús no había llegado todavía al pueblo, sino que estaba en el mismo sitio donde Marta lo había encontrado.
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 Los Judíos que estaban en la casa consolando a María, al ver que esta se levantaba de repente y salía, la siguieron, pensando que iba al sepulcro para llorar allí.
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 María llegó adonde estaba Jesús y, al verlo, se postró a sus pies y le dijo: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto».
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 Jesús, al verla llorar a ella, y también a los judíos que la acompañaban, conmovido y turbado,
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 preguntó: «¿Dónde lo pusieron?». Le respondieron: «Ven, Señor, y lo verás».
35 Jesus wept;	35 Y Jesús lloró.
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 Los judíos dijeron: «¡Cómo lo amaba!».
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 Pero algunos decían: «Este que abrió los ojos del ciego de nacimiento, ¿no podría impedir que Lázaro muriera?».
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 Jesús, conmoviéndose nuevamente, llegó al sepulcro, que era una cueva con una piedra encima,
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 y le dijo: «Quiten la piedra». Marta, la hermana del difunto, le respondió: «Señor, huele mal; ya hace cuatro días que está muerto».
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 Jesús le dijo: «¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?».
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 Entonces quitaron la piedra, y Jesús, levantando los ojos al cielo, dijo: «Padre, te doy gracias porque me oíste.
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 Yo sé que siempre me oyes, pero le he dicho por esta gente que me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado».
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 Después de decir esto, gritó con voz fuerte: «¡Lázaro, ven afuera!».
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 El muerto salió con los pies y las manos atados con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: «Desátenlo para que pueda caminar».
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 Al ver lo que hizo Jesús, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de María creyeron en él.
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 Pero otros fueron a ver a los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho.
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron un Consejo y dijeron: «¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre realiza muchos signos.
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 Si lo dejamos seguir así, todos creerán en él, y los romanos vendrán y destruirán nuestro Lugar santo y nuestra nación».
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 Uno de ellos, llamado Caifás, que era Sumo Sacerdote ese año, les dijo: «Ustedes no comprenden nada.
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 ¿No les parece preferible que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que perezca la nación entera?».
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 No dijo eso por sí mismo, sino que profetizó como Sumo Sacerdote que Jesús iba a morir por la nación,
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en la unidad a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 A partir de ese día, resolvieron que debían matar a Jesús.
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 Por eso él no se mostraba más en público entre los judíos, sino que fue a una región próxima al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraím, y allí permaneció con sus discípulos.
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 Como se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, mucha gente de la región había subido a Jerusalén para purificarse.
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 Buscaban a Jesús y se decían unos a otros en el Templo: «¿Qué les parece, vendrá a la fiesta o no?».
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno conocía el lugar donde él se encontraba, lo hiciera saber para detenerlo.
