NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 C'era un malato, Lazzaro da Betània, il paese di Maria e di sua sorella Marta.
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 Maria era quella che aveva unto il Signore con profumo e gli aveva asciugato i piedi con i capelli; Lazzaro, che era ammalato, era suo fratello.
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 Le due sorelle mandarono a dirgli: "Vedi, Signore, colui che tu ami è ammalato".
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 Sentito che l'ebbe, Gesù disse: "Questa malattia non è per la morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa sia glorificato il Figlio di Dio".
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 Gesù amava Marta e sua sorella e Lazzaro.
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 Quando sentì che era ammalato, rimase ancora due giorni nel luogo in cui si trovava.
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 Solo dopo dice ai discepoli: "Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea".
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 Gli dicono i discepoli: "Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ritorni là?".
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 Rispose Gesù: "Non sono dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo.
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 Ma se cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui".
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 Detto questo, soggiunse: "Il nostro amico Lazzaro si è addormentato, ma vado a risvegliarlo".
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 Gli dissero allora i discepoli: "Signore, se è addormentato, si salverà".
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 Gesù però parlava della morte di lui. Essi invece avevano supposto che parlasse del riposo del sonno.
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: "Lazzaro è morto
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 e godo per voi di non essere stato là, affinché crediate. Ma andiamo da lui!".
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 Disse allora Tommaso, chiamato Didimo, ai condiscepoli: "Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui".
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 Quando Gesù arrivò, trovò che Lazzaro stava nella tomba già da quattro giorni.
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 Betània non è lontana da Gerusalemme se non circa quindici stadi.
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 Ora, molti Giudei si erano recati da Marta e Maria per consolarle del fratello.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 Marta, quando sentì che Gesù veniva, gli andò incontro. Maria invece stava seduta in casa.
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 Marta disse allora a Gesù: "Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto.
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 Ma anche ora so che qualsiasi cosa tu chieda a Dio, egli te la darà".
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 Le dice Gesù: "Tuo fratello risorgerà".
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 Gli risponde Marta: "So che risorgerà nella risurrezione all'ultimo giorno".
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 Le disse Gesù: "Io sono la risurrezione e la vita. Chi crede in me, anche se morisse, vivrà;
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 e chiunque vive e crede in me, non morirà mai. Credi tu a ciò?".
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 Gli dice: "Sì, Signore. Io ho creduto che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio, quello che deve venire nel mondo".
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 Detto questo, andò e chiamò sua sorella Maria, dicendole sottovoce: "Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama".
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 Quella, appena udito ciò, si alzò in fretta e andò da lui.
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 Gesù non era arrivato al paese, ma si trovava ancora nel luogo in cui gli era andata incontro Marta.
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 Quando i Giudei, che erano con lei nella casa e la consolavano, videro Maria alzarsi in fretta ed uscire, la seguirono, supponendo che andasse alla tomba per piangervi.
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 Maria, giunta al luogo in cui si trovava Gesù, lo vide e si gettò ai suoi piedi dicendogli: "Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto".
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 Gesù allora, come la vide piangere e piangere anche i Giudei venuti con lei, fremette interiormente e si turbò;
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 poi disse: "Dove l'avete posto?". Gli dicono: "Signore, vieni e vedi".
35 Jesus wept;	35 Gesù pianse.
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 Dicevano allora i Giudei: "Vedi come l'amava!".
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 Ma alcuni di essi dissero: "Non poteva costui, che ha aperto gli occhi del cieco, fare che questi non morisse?".
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 Scosso nuovamente da un fremito in se stesso, Gesù viene al sepolcro. Era una grotta e vi era stata posta una pietra.
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 Dice Gesù: "Levate la pietra". Gli dice Marta, la sorella del morto: "Signore, già puzza... è di quattro giorni...".
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 Le dice Gesù: "Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?".
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 Levarono dunque la pietra. Gesù alzò gli occhi e disse: "Padre, ti ringrazio di avermi ascoltato.
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 Sapevo bene che tu sempre mi ascolti. Ma l'ho detto per la gente che sta attorno, affinché credano che tu mi hai mandato".
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 Detto questo, gridò a gran voce: "Lazzaro, vieni fuori!".
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 Uscì fuori il morto, legato piedi e mani con bende e la sua faccia era avvolta con un sudario. Gesù dice loro: "Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare".
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 Molti dei Giudei, che erano andati da Maria e avevano visto ciò che aveva fatto, credettero in lui.
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 Alcuni di essi, invece, andarono dai farisei e raccontarono loro ciò che aveva fatto Gesù.
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 Allora i sacerdoti-capi e i farisei convocarono il sinedrio e dicevano: "Che cosa facciamo? Quest'uomo compie molti segni!
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 Se lo lasciamo continuare così, tutti crederanno in lui, verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il luogo e la nazione".
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 Ma uno di loro, Caifa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: "Voi non capite niente,
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 né vi rendete conto che è più vantaggioso per voi che muoia un solo uomo per il popolo e non perisca tutta intera la nazione".
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 Questo però non lo disse da se stesso, ma, essendo sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, profetizzò che Gesù stava per morire per la nazione,
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 e non per la nazione soltanto, ma anche per radunare insieme nell'unità i figli dispersi di Dio.
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 Da quel giorno dunque decisero di farlo morire.
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 Per questo Gesù non si mostrava più in pubblico fra i Giudei, ma se ne andò da lì, in una regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata E'fraim, e lì rimase con i suoi discepoli.
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 Era prossima la Pasqua dei Giudei e salirono molti a Gerusalemme dal paese prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 Cercavano Gesù e dicevano fra loro, stando nel tempio: "Che ne dite? Non verrà alla festa?".
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 Ma i sacerdoti-capi e i farisei avevano impartito l'ordine che se qualcuno sapeva dove si trovava, lo denunciasse, così che lo potessero arrestare.
